We wanted a rainforest hike, and none of the tour operators delivered, until we discovered this absolute gem of a trail on our last day which cost a fraction of what we paid on our other organised trips, and we did it ourselves.
As other reviews have pointed out, the best way to get here is put Millet Bird Sanctuary into Google maps, and let your sat nav direct you if you have a hire car. Alternatively, I'm sure the taxi drivers all know it.
Road towards the end IS very bumpy and full of enormous potholes, so you need to negotiate round them, which added to the excitement of travelling deep into the centre of the Island rainforest.
You get a guide, and your's was Ken. He deserves true recognition, taking us at our own pace and constantly impressing us with his vast knowledge of flora and fauna. His bird imitations incredibly attracted all 5 endogenous birds for us to see, including several St. Lucua parrots, Orioles, Black and blue finches warblers and numerous hummingbirds. He even found a dead viper, proving they did exist in the forest!
The hike took us 3.5 hours, but we were slow with my wife's dodgy knee and me being overweight, but it was very doable and exhilarating. Walking shoes are adviseable, but my wife managed perfectly well in only her Crocs. Take lots of water to drink. We took 2 litres each and ran out, indictating how much you will sweat in the rainforest.
To top it, Ken found a coconut on the trail, and cracked it open for us. It was undoubtedly the sweetest and most delicious bounty any of us had ever experienced.

Bottom line, a definite must, for those who want more than just a sandy beach holiday.

This was an excellent wee jaunt into the heart of the island rainforest to hear and see all sorts of flora and fauna, both on the way and while there. The facility is run by the go ernment forestry service and is poorly sign posted. But read other reviews for how to get there. Took me about 90 mins by taxi from View Fort. Not straightforward but perfectly possible. The reward is you'll probably have the place to yourself. As for the trail, again, what is said in other reviews regarding level of difficulty, what you are likely to see, footwear and timing is all pretty accurate IMHO. So, allow around 2 hrs, but can be longer or shorter. Moderate fitness should be sufficient. Trial is well made and maintained. Guide is compulsory. I was fortunate to get Pamela, a strikingly confident, knowledgeable and articulate local who was obviously passionate about her work and keen to inculcate her knowledge to her guidees. I highly recommend this to anyone who is at all interested in nature, regardless of prior knowledge, and who is reasonably fit. Don't forget to tip the guide, just $40 EC (less than $15 US) goes a long way here especially given very modest government salaries. That's really very little IMHO given the quality of the experience.

We did the hike in February, it takes about 1.5 hrs of up and down medium difficulty maintained circuit trail. Great views and the forest is beautiful, a lady who works there was our guide and was very nice to talk to. It was a nice hike as others were either too short (Tet Paul is about a 30 minute walk) or too long.

You do not need a 4x4 to get up here, we had a Chevrolet Spark. It's $10usd pp for the guided hike. We had running shoes which were fine, anything but flipflops are workable. Thoroughly enjoyed.

We didn't see any parrots BUT - for parrot viewing we found Morne Tabac Parrot Sanctuary, just above Soufriere (5 mins past the Beacon restaurant). Saw loads of Parrots and had an amazing time, might be easier to get to for cruise guests. There's a hiking trail but you can also just walk to the viewing platform. It's $5usd pp. Definitely recommend.

Quite a tough walk! Seriously uphill much of the time, but incredibly interesting and beautiful. Our ranger, Pamela, was very knowledgeable and pointed out birds, insects, crabs, plants on our way.

Glad we made the drive to this hidden gem. Pamela was an excellent guide through the rain forest. We saw 3 of the 5 native bird species but the real delight was waking through the forest and having her point out trees, bushes, crabs (luckily no snakes) that we would have missed on our own. The route was less than 2 miles and you have an option of strenuous or not. FYI--We also did the Rainforest Tram, in another part of St. Lucia, and preferred the immersion of the Millet Bird Sanctuary to the more touristy Rainforest Tram (although that was enjoyable in its way).

Beautiful rain forest - my guide was humourous and entertaining but new next to nothing about birds, plants, trees or anything else. Cracked some coconuts to eat on the way. Guide was $30 I thought it was expensive as he keen nothing - and that was after bargaining - he asked for $40!!!

We were on a 10 day cruise in the Caribbean and were just in port for the day. We took a taxi up almost to the top of the island. Our taxi driver wasn't sure if we were at the right place, but we all spotted the small sign that confirmed we had arrived. This is a government facility and they really don't advertise much, so I told them I would for sure encourage folks to come up and see what a beautiful place they have. Pamela was our guide and she was very knowledgeable and obviously loves her job. We took a three hour tour and were fortunate enough to see a great variety of birds as well as other wildlife. Take good walking shoes as the trail can be rugged in places and muddy too. This isn't your typical Caribbean excursion, so if you love birds and walking in nature I really encourage you to take advantage.

The location is mature forest through which trails have been cut, which rise and fall quite steeply in places. The only toilets are available at the reception building near the main entrance. Steps have been cut along the trails to make life easier but the clay soil can be slippery when wet, so good foot ware is essential. A reasonable level of fitness is necessary to cope with the terrain. We started early and spent a morning on the trails where we saw five endemic species. These were the St Lucia Oriole, the S L Warbler, the S L Black Finch, the S L Pee Wee and the S L Parrot. Other highlights were the Pearly Eyed Thrasher,Grey Trembler, Mangrove Cuckoo, Lesser Antillean Flycatcher and Carribean Elaenia. Raptors included Broad Winged Hawks and a migratory Merlin. We went with our own guide who was not only an excellent bird guide but also had extensive knowledge of all the trees and plants and their medical and other uses.

We were let down by a professional bird guide when we arrived in St Lucia who was suppose to take us to see all of the specialist birds in the area. As a fall back we took a taxi from the port to Millet Nature Reserve for 40$ each and paid a further 30$ each for a fantastic guided walk (3 hrs plus). Saw 5 of the six endemic birds plus afterwards the taxi driver took us on a sightseeing trip before dropping us off at the ship. We were all best pleased and would like to thank the taxi driver, the guides and tour facilitators who managed to salvage a brilliant trip from a disaster. For birders, Millet Nature Reserve is well worth visiting. The last endemic (St Lucia Peewee) is hard to find these days and would need a specialist guide to find and see it.

Somewhat out of the way In the center of island. Ad certainly no post whatsoever to help so have a good GPS. Once in Millet go to the end of the road and you’re arrived. Didn’t really enjoy the walk because of heavy rain so we had to cut it short but the location is promising.
