Please note that this is not a hike, but rather a climb. You will be scrambling up boulders and climbing stacks of rocks using vine roots for hand-holds. In many spots you'll need to pull yourself up with a rope and rappel back down. A guide is *strongly* recommended.
We hired Jason as our guide. Jason has been making this climb for years and has developed an astonishing level of skill at climbing and guiding. He knew every inch of the piton. He was able to advise us on exactly where to place each hand and foot at the tricky spots, and trained us on the proper way to use ropes. He had the experience to know how long we should wait at each rest stop just by watching our level of exertion. And he didn't break a sweat himself. Give him a call at +1-758-384-4693 if you don't already have a guide.
If you make it to the top you're rewarded with amazing views of Soufriére, the Gros Piton, and the interior of the island. And you'll return home with a fun story and a great sense of accomplishment. It's a terrific experience -- just take care and mind your guide.

This is probably the most challenging hike in Saint Lucia. The is significant altitude gain on very short distance, and the off the sections have ropes to climb. Definitely get a guide as they know the way and can assist you in case of any problems. I personally used the services of Wayne, a local living in Soufriere. His number is +1-758-714-5454.
Bring around 1.5-2 liters of water/ gatorade and start early to avoid the heat, and if you make it you will be rewarded with an amazing view of Gros Piton and Piton Bay.

My boyfriend and I went with Jason, who our resort recommended. He was very knowledgeable and accommodating. He went out of our way to give us a great experience both during the hike and after, taking us to a nearby water fall afterward to relax our tired bodies as well as a nearby beach, then back to our hotel. He even picked us up to go to dinner that evening to give us some relaxation time. The trail was almost totally vertical and required both walking/climbing/maneuvering ropes and rocks without a tether. This trail would not be possible with any sort of mobility issue, anyone climbing should be in very good fitness and should not be weary of heights. It was very difficult but views were incredible. Plenty of water is vital and nutritious snacks recommended.

They tried to charge us 40usd per person w/o guide at the start of the trail. The entire experience of hiking is somewhat depleted of its beauty when you are charged money to walk on a trail. It feels like everything here involving tourists has changed the currency from ECD to USD and prices have been increased dramatically. So sad to see this development.
I left without the experience of seeing the top.

We were warned in advance about the difficulty of the Petit Piton trail so we knew we would have a challenge on our hands. Our hotel connected us with a fantastic guide (on very short notice, no less) - Marva. She clearly knew what she was doing - having done the climb hundreds of times - and was calm, patient, friendly, and gave us all the confidence we needed to get through the more intimidating parts of the journey. (Highly recommend you call her if you are thinking of doing the hike 758.460.5288)
The trail lets you know very quickly what kind of day you're going to be in for - be prepared for the flattest parts to still feel like a treadmill on max incline or a stairmaster. I'm not the most comfortable person around precarious heights or exposure and it was generally fine for me. Most of the time there are ropes or trees/branches that you can brace or grab.
Marva was very encouraging for all of us the whole way, moving at whatever pace we wanted - I know she could have gone much faster if we wanted, and she would have also been perfectly content slowing down if we needed it. And bonus, she took pics and videos for us along the way, which is extra helpful when we have our hands full trying to pull ourselves up ropes.
It rained on us, so we took it a little slower than we might otherwise have. But it was still plenty doable. A few slips, yes, but no big deal. Don't let passing island showers turn you off.
The view from the top is spectacular and absolutely worth it, but honestly just the accomplishment of completing the trail as a group was the real highlight of it. Being done with the climb and seeing Petit Piton in photos or with our own eyes from sea level, it's pretty crazy to think that we climbed it.
People say the way down is tougher than the climb...not the case for me, I found the way down to be much easier, but our group was split between those who favored the ascent versus the descent.
I would highly recommend this to people who are decently active, in some form of shape (If you can run a 5k, you can do this), and want a challenge.
So in summary -
1. Challenge yourself, you can do it.
2. The view from the top is absolutely worth it.
3. Don't be scared of a little rain.
3. Call Marva!

We arranged the climb with Marva a few days beforehand. I struggle with the heat and figured I might not make it but I did the climb with my very fit 15 year old daughter. Sure enough, after a while it was too much for me but I felt very comfortable turning around and having my daughter continue with Marva. She texted me updates when the got to the top and sent pictures and videos. It was a great experience and my daughter said it was one of the best things she’s done. I highly recommend hiring Marva as a guide. (I found her by recommendations on here as well. She can be reached on WhatsApp (many things on the island use this, so you’ll want to download it) at 1 (758) 460-5288. Several other families from our town (in New Hampshire) visited the island at the same time and it seems like we had the best experience. Have fun!

Perfect adventure if you’re looking for something a bit more challenging. You need a guide and we were looked after by Mervin the Mountain Goat. +1 (758) 384-7844. The cost for me and my 16 year old son was USD165 plus we tipped the guys at the base who install the ropes. We took about 3 1/2 hours for the 5 1/2 mile round trip which I guess is an average pace. I’m fairly fit but it’s tough going in the heat and humidity. Mervin sets the pace to suit his clients though so he’ll go at your pace. It’s a steep route for most of the climb with fixed ropes on the more tricky sections. I’d say these are ‘moderate’ at their trickiest which is the lowest climbing grade. Previous climbing experience helps but I’m sure it’s still doable if you have a moderate fitness level and some upper body strength. Views are amazing and it’s a worthy challenge. I’d recommend 1.5 ltrs water minimum. I didn’t take a hat as you’re under the canopy until the summit. We set off at about 7.45am. It’s a little cooler and a nice breeze blows through from about half way up. We both did the walk in our Vans. Not great but it was all we had and they were just about ok. If it’s raining you’d probably need something with a bit more grip. Or any grip! We didn’t take lunch just some snacks and actually we didn’t want them just water. Oh and we took a couple of cold Pitons for the summit. I mean why wouldn’t you?

Saw Mervin recommended on trip advisor so thought i'd give him a call. Great decision. Hes an absolute machine and makes a very challenging climb look easy. Please book with him, hes awesome. The real bedroom bully!
The climb has lots of tough rope sections and the incline is no joke. Amazing 360 views of St Lucia from the summit.
Mervin also took us on a snorkel trip with our boat driver Pepto where we saw some cool fish and turtles.
Mervin : +1 (758) 384-7844

Went hiking to petit piton in May of 2024. I reached out to Marva based off of the reviews I read and she was absolutely amazing ! I went with two of my friends who are not hikers at all but Marva was very patient. She was just wonderful and our safety was always the first thing on her mind. You won’t regret booking with her ! She is extremely knowledgeable with the trail and not only that but she is very kind. She also takes awesome photos !

Challenging at times but very doable with a guide. Our guide was Kent, super helpful. He told me where to put my feet and how best to climb the most steep parts. The views at the end were so worth it! Message Kent on WhatsApp +1 (758) 727-3147.
