As part of the visit to the area you get a tour guide to help explain the area. We had Theodora and she was FULL of knowledge. We went from the basic questions to the more detailed questions and she was able to help us understand the geology, history and the cultural significance of this area. I'm not sure this would have been 5 stars without her, but we felt fully educated thanks to Theodora!

Island Life Wrangler Adventures took me to Saint Lucia's volcano and sulphur springs / mud bath where I became an artistic canvas of mud and rejuvenated myself in the bath! I can't wait until my next visit!

I went with a tour group and was not able to do the whole drive through experience, this review is only for the "mud baths".

Note, there are no mud “baths”, what you see in pictures is actually people rinsing the mud off in pools of hot water.

To start with you’re lucky if you can get down the road to where the baths are located. We were in a tour bus, but I cannot imagine trying to navigate that mess as the driver, people and vehicles everywhere and I saw several near miss collisions and the buses drive so close to other vehicles (they don’t have a choice) I’d be weary of leaving my vehicle parked there as you could likely come back to some damage.

Once inside the baths you get herded into a stony area with a hundred other people (more probably, it’s not a large area) with no direction, there are some shelves to set your belongings but no lockers and no security. Don’t bring anything in with you that you can’t afford to lose.) There is a real lack of direction or signage to let you know what you are supposed to be doing but eventually you realise there are random small buckets placed around with a bit of mud in the bottom. There are so many people you can barely move, and you pretty much fight others to get to a bucket and get your hand in and scoop out a bit of mud to rub on yourself. You are being jostled the whole time; this place is packed! Then need to get into one of four pools of hot water which get gradually cooler (all are very hot though), you start at the hottest and work your way through. You need to fight people pushing in and out of the pools to use the steps or get your hand on the railing to safely ascend/descend as everyone is fighting to get in or out at the same time, there is no organization or reason, and you have a 30-minute time limit, so people are struggling to get through in time. I have heard it is less crowded if you go right when it opens or right before it closes but also spoke to some people who came later and were tuned away (despite it being well within opening hours) so I suppose you take a risk doing that. There is nothing relaxing about this experience. If you just want a picture for your Instagram, go for it, but be weary that there is no place to put your phone/camera and you risk it getting, wet, muddy or stolen if you leave it in your bag to enter the water pools.

Also, the sulphur will stain your bathing suit, it will be black or turn orange (it stained some people’s skin orange as well), do not wear anything you want to keep, it will most likely be ruined. Bring extra towels, you will not want to use the same towel after the mud baths again so if you plan to shower and clean off or go to the waterfall etc. you will need another towel.

Honestly, I would not recommend going out of your way for this place. I can imagine it was a fun thing to do once. We can’t really complain as tourists going to the obvious tourist trap but I just wanted to share some info so others know before they decide to go and aren’t disappointed. It was part of a larger tour so for us it was okay but paying 30USD per person on top of the expense of getting there (and if you drive then look out, as I mentioned the driveway/parking area was intense!) would lead to big disappointment in my opinion.

Sulphur Springs is a geothermal field located to the southwest in the district of Soufriere, a name given by the French meaning 'sulphur mine', because of the proximity of the town to the site. It is the most popular tourist destination in Saint Lucia, with approximately 200,000 annual patrons to the park, and is known as 'the world's only drive-in volcano'.
This was a nice stop but not all that impressive after seeing the geyser fields at Yellowstone in Wyoming, in Iceland, in New Zealand, etc. The boiling mud pots were the most interesting to me.

We drove here ourselves just following the sign from the main road. Easy to find and plenty of parking. As you arrive, you drive up to the ticket booth if you want the combined experience of the drive in vulcano and mud bath. With your ticket, you then drive on for appr 300m, park your car and walk up to the tour guides (included in the price). Because we drove ourselves we managed to arrive before the minibuses and had a tour guide just for the two of us. Whilst the tour was nor particularly ground breaking, it was interesting to learn a bit more about the geology of the area. The tour took about 20 minutes and after that you drive your car back to the main car park for the mud baths. There are changing rooms and showers. You are advised to remove any silver jewellery due to the slightly acidic waters effects on them. Unfortunately, I was wearing an underwired bikini and it did permanently stain it. The pools vary slightly in temperature from app. 40 degrees Celsius to 35 with the lowest being the coolest. If I were to do this again, I would come in the evening as it is very relaxing and would be nice to go to bed straight after. Overall, a great little attraction if you can get there either before or after the main crowds.

We stopped here as part of a full day catamaran tour with Carnival tours, local company not the cruise line that we booked through our resort Windjammer Landing.

It’s a popular spot so it’s a bit of an assembly line to get the experience. But if you forget that it was really very cool. The sulfur springs are smelly, but it should be expected, because it’s sulfur! There are two types of mud, one that is fairly liquidy and gray with some grit for exfoliation. The second mud is very thick and black and is used to make decorations on top of the grey mud. You rinse off in the spring. The spring is hot, like a hot tub around 100F.

In our tour our next stop was the local waterfall which is on the cool side and pretty powerful, fun refreshing way to rinse some more mud off.

Along the way through both places our tour crew used our phones to take video and photos.

We went at about 5pm which meant we had the place almost to ourselves. Natural sulphur springs quite an experience. Also worth walking up the hill a bit to get a great view of some of the other areas

Mud bath was a fun experience and thankfully we had a private driver who ensure we arrived before the crowds. After the mud bath, we had a private tour of sulfur springs and our guide was very knowledgeable and overall it was a good experience. Be sure to wear a dark swim suit for the mud bath.

After hiking Petit Piton, the Sulphur Springs are a great place to relax, and unwind my muscles. The hot springs itself open
pretty early at around 6 o’clock and close pretty late at around 10 PM. However, if you want to do the tour, it only starts at around 9 AM and ends at around 5 PM.

Most of the locals arrive very early and depart before the tours come. It is highly recommended that you arrive as early as you can for the cool weather later in the day, it can be pretty hot and crowded.

This is definitely highlight when visiting St. Lucia

These are quite small, so don't expect too much!
We went with a guide/tour and went straight in as they had sorted the tickets. It is also useful to have someone with you, as they can "guard" your belongings and take pictures for you!
Go with your swimsuit underneath, so you can just strip off top clothes and get in. Take towels too. And the mud can stain - so make sure you have dark swimming gear.
There are 4 baths - not that big and they say to spend about 10 minutes in to warm up. Then you cover yourself in the light grey mud. Then you get the dark mud and paint a pattern - or get one of the guides to do it - they are much better at it!
You let this dry off (and have lots of pictures!) and then get back in to rinse it off. It doesn't come off fully - it will be ingrained in your skin for days!!!
There are showers, but these are more of a tap to rinse off.
We wrapped our towels around us, popped flip flops back on and the guide said to get back in the car like that. We then went to the waterfalls nearby and you rinse off here and there are cubicles to put your clothes back on.

It can be a bit of a drive to get here, but is a fun thing to do. We were probably only there around 40 minutes, so it's good to do it with other things.
