Dove the RMS Rhone while sailing in the BVI. Was recently certified and the Rhone was an incredible experience for one of my first open water dives

The Rhone is an interesting dive site with a lot of sea life and an interesting back story. It is in a few parts so think of it as two dives.

This was a surprisingly vibrant and well-preserved wreck. There were tons of live corals and vegetation calling the Rhone home. There was a curious shark who watched us dive the entire time, and we quickly devoted our attention to the numerous fish and other creatures living in the Rhone (also saw the largest lobster I've ever seen in my life, had to be close to 3 feet long).
In sum, we had a great dive and I was pleasantly surprised by how much nature we were able to see. I'd even say it's one of the most healthy wrecks I've ever dove.

The shipwreck was used in the GREAT 1977 movie “THE DEEP” with Robert Shaw, Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset (wow Tom really liked Jacqueline's wet T-shirt).
The wreck is a GREAT DIVE in gin clear water (100 ft. + visibility). The inside of the bow section is best explored via SCUBA, but it is a nice snorkel as the water is so clear. The snorkel over the stern (which is in a little shallower water) is interesting (lots of Machinery), but a mess as that part of the iron ship was later blown up by the government because it presented a navigation hazard (just below the water) in this sheltered bay / point of the island!

Good dive site with shark, turtles etc. Suited to divers of all ages and abilities, and it is possible to snorkel the stern but I would only suggest that on a day with good visibility.
Great as a first wreck dive

Snorkeled here in Feb 2020. It was interesting snorkeling over the wreck but saw very little of interest other than this, not may fish or coral. I would have been disappointed if this had been the sole reason for our boat trip.

Amazing snorkeling and diving! There are a lot of mooring balls, and the site was not affected by the hurricane at all. Great dive/snorkel site, and we were able to spend about half an hour on the wreck and hung out in the bay for lunch and swimming. People were on shore too, so think hiking is definitely good here too!

We were very excited by how much of the wreck we could see using only snorkeling gear. Saw lots of tropical fish and a sea turtle on the wreck. Good snorkeling in the rocks surrounding the wreck as well.

Hello, we are bareboating and want to stop at the wreck and snorkel. Where can we moor? Do we need to take the dinghy to the wreck area or is there mooring for cats near the dive site?

Hello. We're going to be in Tortola last week of February and want to snorkel over the Rhone. I can't find anyone online who offers a snorkeling trip? only diving. Do you know who offers snorkeling only? Thanks, Lisa

We dove with Sail Caribbean Divers last summer and they were great. Get in touch with them and see if they have an appropriate trip. If they do, you'll likely be in a mixed group of divers and snorkelers. The stern section of the Rhone sits at 25 to 50 feet and is a fine snorkel. This section includes the massive propeller and a few other notable sights. It's also situated close to shore and is typically protected from heavy swells and currents. We snorkeled it with our kids from a rented bareboat.
The deeper portion of the wreck is not well suited for snorkelers. It's more exposed and deep enough that you won't get much out of it from the surface. So if you find a trip with mixed divers/snorkelers, make sure the verify that they'll drop the snorkelers on the stern of the wreck.

Why does this redirect you to the Rum Tour when trying to buy tickets? I want to go to the marine park not the Rum tour !

Not sure. Typically only scuba operators will be heading out to the Rhone.

Hello my fellow Tripadvisors! We are doing a bareboat from 1/17/17 to 1/26/17 and wanted to find out the best two dives while we cruise the islands including Anegada.
I know the Rhone is the popular choice but wanted to know other possible selections which may be less crowded and be exciting to see. Does anyone have some ideas for us?
Also, are we able to dive out on Anegada and can we catch lobster there?
Any suggestions on the best way to catch lobster and best techniques or places where we should do that?
Thank you in advance.

Tortola
Hi Brick
My name is Dan and I'm a dive instructor with Sail Caribbean Divers on Tortola. Its a big question about the dive sites if you haven't dived the Rhone before it is worth doing. My favorite sites in the area are painted walls really beautiful site with rock walls covered in so many different corals it looks like someone has splashed paint all over them. This one is near Peter island. Then there is Alice in wonderland which is one of the best places to find reef sharks.
It is not possible to fish for lobster in any areas of the BVI.
If you stop in at any dive shop on the islands they will be more than happy to give you more details of any of the 70+ sites in the area.
cheers
Dan

How do you get to the park from the cruise ship terminal.....we are a family of 7 on a tight budget

We went scuba diving, so the dive shop/boat had it all planned.
The Rhone wreck is on a different island from where the cruise ship docks.... so you will need to set something up beforehand...

Hi,
Can anyone tell me which companies offer snorkeltrips from Tortola or from Virgin Gorda to the RMS Rhone?
