When I first came to Nevis in 2014 I was told there were scorpions in the grounds...never seen them. Location interesting and near to a hotel to take refreshments.

We had hired a car and were mooching around the island when we came across this little church ruin down a side road leading to a large hotel.
It's been preserved as a ruin and somehow it feels right that it has been done like this. The information boards were very interesting, reading about the slaves of that congregation and the fact that this was the first church where slaves and whites were allowed to worship together. Quite moving!

A quiet space of contemplation, and a lot of conflicting thoughts when reading through the information they provide on the builder and his history. The actual site is beautiful, and to read the names of the persons who were enslaved and built the church and worshipped there is extremely powerful. Highly recommend.

The first church to have black and white worshippers together, the list of names and ages on the wall is intense reading

Within walking distance from the Newcastle road in the grounds of The Mount Hotel, this is a fascinating slice of history - the first church in the region to welcome both white and black congregations. The founder was clearly well loved in the Nevis community.

Well maintained and good point of interest; we stumbled upon this because it was a geocache site per our geocache app and turned out to be a pleasant surprise; kids weren’t too interested in the history but my husband and I were

This is a nice place to stop and see a great example of a preservation effort. There is a gazebo on the property that shows the before and after pictures, along with information on the project.

As the title says this has been nicely 'stabilised' i.e. tidied up, cleared/cleaned and made safe. There is a veranda up in the corner of the land where you can sit and gaze peacefully over the church. There is also an incredible amount of useful information pinned up in the veranda about the construction of the church and the characters involved e.g. Cottle etc. I found this really interesting and very well done.

I suppose the only slight 'fly in the ointment' is that for the praise heaped on good ol' Mr Cottle he was still a slave owner (irrespective of how compassionate he may have been) and this was 1824 quite a few years after slavery had been abolished etc i.e. he's not exactly squeaky-clean.

We were the only ones strolling the grounds and we were amazed with the preservation of the church as there are information explaining about it. It is a worthy stop and of course, breathtaking to take black and white photos of the church.

An old church ruin, one can appreciate the quiet and peace of the place. The history of the build gives one pause for thought about the slaves who built it and the enlightened( for the time) owner who had it built and allowed slaves and freemen to worship together for the very frst time. We may snarl at the idea of keeping slaves, but this was an achievement on the way to freedom.
