I'm a descendent of Bahamian enslaved people and this simply but powerfully presented museum got the tone exactly right. I learned so much about early Bahamians. I've always spoken my enslaved ancestors' names as often as possible - Hugh and Diana Minnis - but now I can also imagine their lives in three, colourful, respectful dimensions. I am very grateful for the work and care put into the Pompey Museum.

We paid $33 to see upstairs and downstairs and neither was worth the expense. Upstairs was definitely not worth seeing and downstairs, although a good concept, was poorly laid out and lacking in content. Wouldn’t recommend either.

This museum is chock full of information. The top floor is devoted to the Lucaya Indians (separate charge) and the main floor provides history of the island, slavery, emancipation, British rule, etc. Allow plenty of time to see it if this is of interest to you. There are a lot of displays and lots of reading. We were the only visitors while we were there.

While this museum is small and has entry fees for upstairs and downstair exhibits, it has a lot of good information about the history of Nassau and the Bahamas. Downstairs focuses on the history of slavery and emancipation and has some beautiful displays. There is a lot to info to read and the interactive screens don't work perfectly but if you want to learn some things, come here. Upstairs focuses on the Lucayans, the islands' inhabitants when Columbus arrived. This was a great space to learn about them and see some artifacts of their culture.

The building that houses this Museum is a building once used to auction off slaves. It is a sobering reminder that slavery still occurs to this day. It is also a reminder of how brutal the slave trade was.
This Museum is a self-tour, mainly consisting of large information boards with pictures and descriptions of the history of slavery in the Bahamas. There are also some artifacts housed within the museum.
It is a small museum jam-packed with information!
I'm glad we visited during our trip to Nassau. It is located nearby to the Pirate's Museum.

I love history. I was excited to visit this historical landmark and beautiful, brightly colored museum. Upon attempting to enter, the lady working in the building told us it was $2 dollars, however, she was then told by the man who did not work there (who had driven us there in the taxi )it was $5 dollars to enter per person. I found this odd but we paid it and entered. She told us she would have to go get us to change. I said that is fine. She also told us to look around and that was it. She returned but never attempted to talk to us about anything or provide insight about the museum. The museum had a nice bookstore area but other than a few actual artifacts that caught my eye it was mostly giant reading panels with illustrations. If I counted right they barely had 5 actual artifacts on display. Not my idea of a museum. I guess the taxi guy got himself a cut of the money we paid and I would def like to speak to management about that. Disappointed.

The website says that the entrance fee was $3 but when you get there they change it to $5.50. This is not a museum either. It is just a bunch of big boards that you have to read to learn the history of slavery in the Bahamas. There is no tour of the house that could give you an idea of what it looked like in the past. Save yourself $5.50 and read the information online.

A great place to visit when in downtown Nassau. It is only a small place but it is packed full of information regarding the trade of slavery and emancipation. It brings the history of the slave trade home.

This museum is located in the original enslaved-persons auction house on the main strip in downtown Nassau. It was very educational and a must-see. That said, this museum could use an update to make it more accessible to children and teens, with more interactive exhibits, more artifacts, docents, and a clearer, easier to follow timeline. Also, there's no public restroom on the premises.
