On previous visits to Scotland, I have been unlucky to find the museum closed - note that it is only open June until September. It was top of my places to visit this time. What a wealth of information about the Gunn clan ! The curator was extremely friendly and informative answering all our questions, and more. The layout of the artefacts and the information boards are well presented in this beautifully renovated 18th century church. Take time to watch the interesting video. The little gift shop area is well-stocked - of course Gunn neckties and books by Neil Gunn. The views from the graveyard are outstanding at this extremely scenic part of the Highlands eastern coastline. Our visit was made extra special by meeting the Clan Chieftain Iain Gunn who had just returned from Edinburgh where he had been honored by the Queen.

Must Visit for Clan Gunn Members
jun. 2019 • Par
We spent 3 weeks in Scotland visiting castles, cathedrals and sights. One of our favorites was the visit to the Clan Gunn Museum. As a Clan member, this was a must visit. Curator, David Mackay was very knowledgeable and friendly. We spent a considerable amount of time with all the displays. We had the opportunity to meet the Clan Chief, Ian Gunn and his wife making our visit to the museum very special.

Stop for clan history and beautiful setting
jun. 2019 • Par
The Clan Gunn Heritage Centre is interesting, informative and beautifully located for a brief rest stop on the Caithness coast road. The clan history, including the Gunns’ Viking roots, is intriguing (even if you, like us, have no family/ancestral connection to the clan) and nicely presented. The setting, in an attractive old church with spectacular views over cow pastures to the North Sea coast, invites you to take a relaxing short break from driving. And it helps that there are rest rooms available as well.

If you are of the Clan then a must. If not then an excellent well of history

Friendly, welcoming, fascinating and could not take it in in one go with the time we had so will go back. What a bright and airy building (itself architecturally interesting). the custodian was knowledgeable and very friendly. The displays are well put together. Even if you are not of the clan then you will have a good experience and learn a lot. Give it half an hour of your time if on the NC500. It is well worth it.

Great insight into one of Scotland’s oldest and fiercest Clans

The Clan Gunn centre is not to be missed when travelling the Caithness coast in the north most parts of Scotland.
See how the Clan originated from its Norse Viking roots and settled, battled and dispersed over many years.
Open 11 til 4 mon to sat it may take a bit of planning if you’re touring, but don’t miss it. Give yourself a good hour plus.
The gift shop was also well stocked and well priced.

There’s a public loo in the massive car park too so another reason to plan a stop here if you have a family with you.

Keep an eye out in Latheron.

History of clans in caithness.

This museum has been caught in a time warp, which is no bad thing. If you like hand's on research into the various clans history and fantastic info about The Highland Clearances there is no better place. The elderly man there had some interesting stories about when grave robbing went on in the churchyard cemetery. He also said he had a spat with a man from Brussels, when he asked his wife what his job was she said that he worked for The EU !!! .We enjoyed our visit which was very informative and amusing.

Stopped off here on our honeymoon tour of the NC 500 last summer. The quaint building and scenic setting drew us in and although not a GUNN the man at the desk helped us with info on our own clan history (they had leaflets on most of the clans) and he was full of fascinating stories about the history of the building (seriously old building!!) and we toured the outside as he pointed out things of interest.

We ended up purchasing some items in the shop and picked up some helpful leaflets and maps, and he gave us great tips on sightseeing which saved us some research time! A visit to the Lybster village harbour is a must (5 mins drive from here & nice cafe). A very pretty harbour with vast fishing history.

In short it was a pleasant surprise and worth a visit for the view alone. My advice is don't be afraid to get off the road. There are some real hidden gems on the NC 500, most of them are free and the locals are so friendly and passionate about their history.

An amazing visit
apr. 2017
I am not an impartial reviewer of this attraction. I am a commissioner for the Clan Gunn Society of North America.

I found everything about the museum fascinating and our museum guide truly wonderful.

For a member of the clan or any of the clan societies this is a must visit. For anyone visiting Scotland with any interest in the highland clan system this museum is a must visit.

This museum contains scholarly information presented in displays that highlight and illuminate the clan's origins, history, and notable family members. The artifacts that the museum house are interesting and noteworthy. Including gifts to our new chief Iain Alexander Gunn of Gunn.

The museum is housed in an old parish church, which itself is located on a place of Christian worship going back many centuries. The grounds surrounding the church are a Kirk yard filled with the resting places of many parish members. The site also has the graveyard guardians home that was used at one time to keep the dearly departed at rest instead of being carted off to the medical schools down south.

The scenery surrounding this museum is as breath taking as the museum is informative. High cliffs protect from the rough North Sea below, while sheep graze on green pastures in blissful ignorance to the violence below.

Please take the time to visit this museum. Latheron. This will be an hour or two well spent.

There is ample parking and a handicap accessible public toilet in the parking lot.

Open from 6/1 to 9/30

If you're kin to Gunns, this is a must!

We took the (unreliable) bus from Wick and were dropped off a short walk to the museum. WHAT A SITE!!! The scenery is spectacular, and while the museum is located in an old church, the surrounding cemetery had the feeling of being perfectly gothic. We loved it. Well worth the walk towards the cliffs to see the rugged countryside, and look north towards the ruins of Castle Gunn between Bruan and Mid Clyth!

Back to the Museum. As well as a wealth of written information, we encountered the man who had worked there for ages and was as welcoming and informative as could be. There were as many artifacts as it could hold, including a rubbing and explanation of the Westford Knight, and the back-stories of other clans that did them wrong earlier in their history. It was a fascinating day of cultural investigation.

We loved the gift shop, and left with way more than we expected to. If you are a Gunn, don't miss this site!
