I always stop in to see Hilda at her shop. This isn't a museum, per se, but it does feature some of the most spectacular Alebrijes artwork. From affordable hummingbirds to top artisan pieces, Hilda's place should be your first stop for alebrijes, Oaxacan yarn art, and even a small but impressive bead art collection.

My sister sent me here because she knew I loved the brightly painted wood animals known as alebrijes. Hilda (the owner and a lovely woman to talk to) has an extensive selection of animals. Especially notice the hummingbirds ( she has 4 sizes) hanging from the ceiling or tree. She can tell you about hummingbirds and dreams. She has a broad range of sizes and costs, so you can easily find something in your price range and space limitations. Hilda will show you how to re-assemble the animal(s) once you get home before she carefully wraps them. She also has some of the animals decorated with the small seed beads (Huichol Art), but her best and most numerous items are the wood animals. You can find pictures of various sizes made with strands of yarn for sale there also, but I'm not a good judge of that folk art.

This is a wonderful shop to find fair prices and huge variety on Oaxacan alejibres. The best part is the owner, who takes time to explain the cultural significance of each piece and will even give you a printout with information. She also has a great variety of prices for her products

Shopping at this store is a cultural experience. The owner is a fountain of information about everything she sells. The Huichol art is outstanding and very reasonably priced. Highly recommended.

Great selection, great prices and a wonderful owner who can tell you about the meaning and symbolism behind the local art you are seeing. Beautiful stuff in an unassuming shop that you really should check out.

I never tire of visiting this store: the alebrijes, the Huichol yarn paintings, the Huichol beadwork... The shopkeeper takes the time to explain everything. She packs everything carefully so that it all arrives home in perfect condition!

This small shop is not on any of the main streets that attract the usual tourists, i.e., cruise ship visitors, etc. It's on Calle Libertad near the old bridge over the Rio Quale. The art work is created by the Huichol Indians who live in a secluded part of Mexico. Their art is an extension of the deep religious feelings that every Huichol has acquired through participation in their traditional way of life. This shop allows the Huichol to share their art with the rest of world. Hilda Garcia is very knowledgeable of their beliefs and customs and is happy to share them with visitors. Each piece has a meaning and a purpose to the Huichol. I encourage any visitor to Old Town to find this little shop and support Hilda and the Huichol Indians.

artesanias watakame, a small shop, carries yarn paintings made by the huicholes/wixáritari, an indigenous tribe in the mountains ("huichol" is the name given by the spanish to this population; they are called the "wixárika" people or the "wixáritari" in their own language). many of these paintings are breathtakingly beautiful, and even a quick glance shows the tremendous amount of time and creativity that go into each one. ("artesanias watakame" roughly translates as "handicrafts of watakame." watakame is the central figure in the huichol/wixáritari creation myth.)
the huichol/wixárika people use peyote in their religious ceremonies, and the yarn paintings are representations of the visions their shamans (priests) see while in religiously inspired trances. a stretched canvas is put on a frame and covered with beeswax. then individual strands of yarn are applied to construct the picture, which usually contains all sorts of figures that have religious significance -- for instance, a shaman, stalks of corn, an arrow, rain, the sun, deer, birds, and various stylized animals. each figure and each color has its own individual meaning.
these paintings range in size from 6 inches square to 3 feet square (i have seen rectangular and circular ones also, but they are less common). prices range from $50 to $500. i now have six of these lovely creations, and i consider every one of them to have been worth every dollar i paid for it. prices at this shop are more reasonable than at any other shop offering huichol art that i have seen in puerto vallarta. the huicholes/wixáritari also specialize in bead art, where masks, bowls, and animal figures are covered in colorful glass beads.
going by this store is worth a trip just to take a look at this art, which will no doubt disappear eventually as the huicholes/wixáritari die out. the shop is run by a mother and son who have been dealing with the tribe for years and can explain much about the tribe's history and artisanship.
the shop is open monday thru saturday from 10 am to 9 pm, and sunday from 10 am to 3 pm.
