It is a mountain, it is important to have a certain condition to get there, the views are beautiful. The Sanctuary is very well maintained, the observation of the butterfly is from a certain distance

Great experience from mid-November to mid-March, I went in December and there were a good number of butterflies but the guide says that the end of February is the best time since there are many butterflies, the climb to the mountain is approximately 45 minutes It depends on your condition, on horseback it is shorter, approximately 25 minutes, but they charge $150 per horse per adult, small children, maybe 2 on 1 horse, pay $440 for 3 adults and 2 children, they assign you 1 guide on site by force, They give you a free tip, although they are better than the guides you see at the entrance on the road because they inflate the cost. The entrance is a kind of plaza where they sell food, there are little shops and crafts, bathrooms (clean in my experience) and a zip line, there is plenty of parking. The journey is approximately 50 minutes from Tlalpujahua. There is no data and internet signal in the place. Bring a light sweater and wear it when you go down because if you sweat you can feel very cold. Children definitely have to go up on horseback and an adult accompany them on another one since the journey on horseback is very difficult on foot. To go down there is a very nice path that is not so difficult for children but it does take approximately 1 hour to go down. Carry a backpack with water and a snack because sometimes the butterflies change location and the journey lengthens. To get there, travel from Tlalpujahua to the town of Santa María for approximately 5 minutes and from there to Angangueo, before reaching the town the road ends up connecting to another, turn right and about 5 minutes away you will see an arch that is the entrance to Angangueo, about meters ahead on the right there is a dirt road of approximately 2km that takes you to the entrance to the Sierra Chincua Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. The ideal is to arrive before 12. The location is correct on Google maps. Carry a garbage bag, it's unpleasant to see what people don't respect! There were people who bring their dogs but they bark at the horses and the noise scares away the butterflies so try not to take them because people get uncomfortable. The landscape is beautiful and worth the experience!

Excelente santuario, paisajes hermosos.

This reserve is not as populated as el Rosario, having nearly 1/4 of the the butterfly population... and probably 1/10 of the human traffic. It took a bit more 'work' to get to where the butterflies were... but, IDK - that opportunity to feel kinda more alone with the butterflies...well... it was well worth it. When we were done, we enjoyed lunch at one of the offerings at the base of the reserve. I wished I caught the name. The food was cooked on a wood fired range... and it was very yummy. They made tons of different quesiadias... and a very unique and tasty mushroom soup.

Este lugar es totalmente mágico, su gran vegetación, el camino para llegar hasta donde es posible admirar las mariposas es increíble, arboles altísimos, escuchar el aleteo de los colibríes simplemente me pareció fascinante.

My review of Sierra Chincua Butterfly Sanctuary is slightly spoiled by my own bad planning: We went on a weekend, when the crowds mean that you're unfortunately standing in an unending line in the forest, which sadly detracts from the experience greatly. On the plus side, it's great to see so many people taking an interest in nature.

Also, Sierra Chincua is simply overshadowed by El Rosario, where far more butterflies nest. Fortunately we went here first; if we had gone to El Rosario first, I'm sure we would have been disappointed after the show we saw there.

But... if you can give a day to each preserve as we did, and do them both NOT on the weekend (as we didn't), you're still in for a great day.

Check the weather forecast! If it isn't sunny they won't be flying. Bring binoculars and a zoom lens! Allow 3 hours round trip. Strenuous due to high elevation (over 11,000 feet). Best time is around 2 pm.

We drove from Morelia and arrived by 8:30am at the entrance to Sierra Chincua. The travel blogs said that it was better to arrive early before the bus tours arrived from Mexico City and I’m glad we took their advice. Leonardo waved us down and told us where to park. He explained that we would need a guide to hike the 2 km up the mountain. When we asked about the cost, he said it was by donation. Another couple who arrived a few minutes later joined us and we headed up the trail. It’s very important to wear PROPER FOOTWEAR as the trail was steep in some parts and you needed to really watch your footing. We climbed up to 3000+ meters so all of us were huffing and puffing but our guide was patient and stopped often for us to catch our breath. While we rested, he showed us various plants and pointed out things of interest. The viewpoints were spectacular and finally we reached an area where the butterflies gathered in the trees for the night. By this time ( 11am) the sun was out and it was quite warm. The butterflies awoke and started flying around d searching for food. As it got warmer , they became more active and it was quite spectacular to see them flying all around. Leonardo didn’t rush us and we stayed for quite awhile taking pictures and just soaking in the moment. The crowds/tours started arriving and we were ready to leave. We enjoyed a delicious and well-earned lunch at the trail end! Remember to bring water for the hike. There are bathrooms at the entrance. There are horses and guides available but you’ll need to pay both ways. We didn’t use them so I don’t know the cost.

The most amazing experience!!!!
I just visited this place with two of my friend and OMG! we loved it!! We were lucky enough to have a sunny day because the butterflies just fly around when the sun is out. We had the most amazing show and will totally go back. The hike is challenging but you can always rent a horse and the views are breathtaking and if you go on a weekend be prepare to find a lot of people but what tourist place can we visit on a weekend without finding people?. We hired a tour guide and if you want someone reliable, on time, super nice and knowledgeable please contact him, His name is Oscar and his phone number is (715) 1272308. This place has a piece of my heart and I will totally be there again!
