Nice walk to the Island of the Presidio, transportation by boat for a group of 9 round trip 500 pesos and on the island there are guides who give you a historical tour

This was our second excursion to Mezcala Island. We drive to Mezcala and took the affordable boat accross. We stayed an hour and walked a steady pace to make it too the West side of the island. What a nice day out.

Short drive east around the lake to Mezcal from Ajijic, then Island tour. Was surprised to see that the island in fact sold refreshments and had baños also. Our local guide who spoke English was one of the founders of the museum and his tour was augmented by our Mexican driver Juan's bilingual skills. Sometimes he explained things in clearer terms. The boat ride to the Island was about 1/2 hour and enjoyable. I was a bit shaking on the floating dock but I had no lack of helpers to help me balance. Our hike around the island exploring the ruins and hearing the history as about an hour. Well worth the time. Suggest hiking boots. On the return from Mezcal to Ajijic we stopped at a hidden rock (not far from the roadside) with pre-Hispanic images of spirals and a bird carved into the rock.

I had heard about tours to Mezcala Island on our local Facebook Page Ajijic Newbies. The almost unanimous recommendation was Cesar Sanchez Ramos. I contacted him via FB Messenger and arranged for a tour yesterday. We met at the Mezcala malecon at the appointed time, he loaded us into his boat and off we went. He is quite knowledgeable and very proud of his heritage. He is a kind and gentle person with a wife and daughter. The basic tour is $400 for your small group and lasts about an hour. We chose the full tour for $900, which lasts about 2.5 hours. On the full tour he walks you from end to end on the island taking you inside the various historic buildings. Along the way he gives a concise history that dates back almost two thousand years. He had a great little guy for a helper named Eduardo who is only 8 but has a great attitude and is a joy to be around. Make sure you tip Cesar well for his services. He only receives a very small amount of the tour fee. I highly recommend you see Mezcala Island, but it’s not for those with any mobility issues. His mobile is 332-183-5161. He is also available on WhatsApp. His FB page is Mezcala I Su Del Presidio.

This island has a really fascinating history! I had read the wonderful book, "Mezcala Island" by Randall Best so I knew quite a bit about what had happened here all those years ago. Highly recommend both the book and a trip out to the island!

We recently went to the trip to Mezcal island. Jose was our guide who is very passionate about the history of this place. He is going to write a book he told us of the actual history of Mezcal and the museum. We very much enjoyed our trip and he even let my brother fish for a bit. Recommend.

Currently I am staying in Lake Chapala. I had good advice that taking a day trip to Isla Mezcala would be fun. I looked online to find out more information including the history of the place. I was pleased and the following day I went to the local bus station and caught the bus for 22 pesos one way. In less than an hour I arrived to my destination. After walking a short distance to the Lake I was approached by one of the friendly boatmen. For 350 pesos I could go round trip to the Island. Without hesitation I agreed. It took about 20 minutes before arriving. The boatman, Jose also acted as my tour guide. He knew enough information about the Fort turned Prison to be very helpful. I also looked at the many signs located at the entrance of each of the buildings. We got off the boat and walked up the hill to the Fort. I am an older woman so the climb left me a little winded but since am in good shape it wasn't that bad. Definitely put on your walking or hiking shoes. I walked through the bridge of the Fort and it was a feeling of walking into the past. I imagined what it must have been like during that time. Very interesting. I did see a scorpion on one of the walls. I was ready to go after seeing it, LOL. The tour lasted about an hour. Just enough. I highly recommend see it. Great day trip. Bring water because there are no vendors on the Island. The return trip was just as easy. Walk to where you got off the bus to return to Chapala. The bus returns to the bus station.

Mezcaa is a village really. Drive up to the dock, you can park in the restaurant parking with shade. The restaurant owner organised an English speaking boat driver. He ran out to get petrol and we had a drink .The boat trip took twenty minutes, it was a windy day and the driver had to dodge the lirio. I think out fare was $300 pesos for all three of us. We spent an hour on teh island which is plenty. Our driver/guide was informative and friendly, giving out just enough information and answering our questions. He manages a small museum in town just off the square. We returned and had lunch in the restaurant as we didn't want to hike allover town looking for something else. It was fine . I've enjoyed a better more fun lunch on a weekend by buying a roasted chicken from the street vendors and taking it to the benches in the square for a picnic. We were there on a weekday and it was very quiet. All in all a fun day out . I'll go again with family and friends visiting.

Viaje muy instructivo ! En la isla; 1 hora es un poco cortito para descubrir todos los recursos, la vista y vivir la Historia .... pero se puede pagar tantito mas al lanchero para que espere un poquito mas
