Favorite shop in Mexico City - Like A Museum
nov. 2019 • Familie
Favorite shop in Mexico City - Like A Museum. Learned that most of the masks have been hanging on the walls for 60 years and the masks are even older. Absolutely love this place. Bought several masks to add to our personal collection.

Very expensive but cool shop to visit for a few minutes

When the man working at the store told me he wanted 900 pesos for the small mask (about 10 inches tall) I had selected, I felt the price was way too high. I collect masks from around the world, and compared to what I have paid in other countries, I felt I would have been getting ripped off if I had purchased the mask. I walked away feeling very disappointed. If the mask had been of better quality (carving, painting, etc), I still wouldn't have paid that much for it. Based on the very high prices, I cannot recommend this shop to others. The man wasn't even willing to haggle. I had telephoned the galeria to see if they would be open as they weren't when I arrived. Perhaps, this made the owner feel as if I was desperate to purchase a mask. I just don't know.

Like a museum - what a hidden gem

This really is an exceptional place, and tucked away on the edge of the historical centre blocks away from anything touristy, you’d never find it by accident. The shop has half a dozen rooms, with every bit of wall space covered by wooden masks, mostly from Guerrero state, and all of a high quality, and every single one individual and different. I could have spent hours there looking at them all, it was a very tough choice choosing which one to buy. For me this was one of the highlights of Mexico City. (Also - note that the shop closes on Sundays)

Museum of Masks
okt. 2018
I have read about this mask shop for years but never had the time to visit. This most recent trip to Mexico , I made a point of making time, and this shop is unreal. It is more of a museum than a store. My friends and I went by on a rainy afternoon and we were the only customers there. The owner started turning the lights on in the different rooms and kept going back and back and back. I bet there were almost 10 adjoining rooms and there were masks from floor to ceiling. Some were very old, and I wish now that I could remember how many masks her told me the shop had. Some are authentic masks used in different celebrations or dances and others are just for decoration. An incredible collection!

An unofficial museum in the center of Mexico City

Mario and his mother run the gallery of several thousand masks, started by his uncle, who passed away several years ago. They will take you through the galleries, which consist in several rooms filled from ceiling to floor, all for sale, at reasonable prices! It's worth finding it making the effort to find it. It's only a couple of blocks from Plaza Garibaldi, on Calle Allende, behind the Plaza.

This is the real deal

An out of the way store front that has one of the best collections of hand carved / hand painted masks I have ever seen in the world. 4,000 masks, all from Guerrero. If you are a collector, this is a must.

Thousands of beautiful decorative masks
des. 2013 • Venner
I've been going to see Mario at Galeria Eugenio for many years--I can never visit without buying something, but you're free to just admire the masks and hangings. This store contains literally thousands of wooden, colorfully painted masks (see photos) representing birds, reptiles, mammals, angels... you name it. There are also decorative skeletons and angels. Take your time and browse. Small masks may go for $30-40 while large 3-4 foot hangings can go for several hundred dollars. Mario speaks good English and he and his mother will wrap your purchases very carefully.
