Fajne miejsce w którym nadal trwają prace archeologiczne. Naliczyłam więcej sprzedawców pamiątek niż turystów. Świetne widoki- warto

If you are into archaeology don't miss this gem. We were the only people there (no ticket). Restored observation post for monitoring the valley road. Nice ceremonial center and ball court, noble's house and some industry emplacements.

Hot but great visit. Empty but for one guard. Good ruins and English signs/explanations. Views of Oaxaca. We just took a private taxi from Oaxaca and had him wait for us.

In this site you can see the magnificence of Monte Alban and its people, their techniques and the houses with their own "juegos de pelota". Besides, one can still see the archeologists uncovering new secrets.

As others mentioned no entry fee, we were the only ones there on a May afternoon.

Very nice site to visit to give more perspective of the Zapotec influence here.

The site is pretty extensive, more so then we thought when arriving.
Lots of work to be done to complete the excavations but what was there was impressive.

Excellent views. We had a car but as mentioned Taxis or tuk tuks would work to get there.

Well worth visiting if you have the time.

Interesting archaeology site. Very few people visit this site and it isn't talked about too much with tour companies, similar to San Jose El Magote. I took a taxi from Oaxaca City, had the taxi wait an hour, and then returned to the City for 500 pesos. Its a smaller site, but not too small. If you take your time you might want to give yourself 1 and a half to 2 hours. I walked the site in an hour and had plenty of time. The views of the surrounding valleys are amazing, and in my opinion, better than Monte Alban. Speaking of Monte Alban, you can see it in the distance while at Atzompa.

We were the only people at the site. There are signs explaining the structures but the information is minimal. It was very interesting but we needed more information. It was much larger than what we expected.

The main ruins everyone goes to see in Oaxaca is Monte Alban. For this reason, we went to Atzompa. I’ll probably go see Monte Alban one day, but we have small kids and I figured they would get cranky before we saw ¼ of Monte Alban but they might make it through the smaller, but equally fascinating Atzompa.

There are many posts of how to get there…and we decided to take the simple taxi route. A previous poster said it would be about 200 pesos…and it was. We were staying east of the Zocalo near the hotel One. The driver drove to Atzompa town and then began asking for directions (though the route is signed, the driver had never been to the ruins). We drove as far as the last barrier and then we had to walk a short way to the guard hut. Our taxi driver was concerned about how we were going to get back, but I knew we could walk down to Atzompa town to get a taxi, so I wasn’t worried. The guard asked me to fill in a small questionnaire (level of education of each person in the party) and then we were free to explore. There is no entrance fee.

The area was suitable for small kids, but might be challenging for anyone who has trouble walking or requires a smooth path for a wheelchair. There are lots of stairs. I knew, but had forgotten, that food is not allowed on the premises. We were reminded by the guard, spying on us with binoculars from the top of a hill, when I pulled out a snack for the kids. So, eat before you go in.

We spent 2 hours there, just us and a few guards hiding in the shade trees. The signage is good, the ruins are fascinating, there were open spaces for the kids to run around (and no one there for them to bother!), and, as predicted, their patience waned just as we were completing our tour. With our binoculars we could see people on Monte Alban 2 km away. I imagined that there could have been communication between the two settlements using smoke? Light? I’m sure someone on TA knows more about that than I. There are composting toilets past the restored kilns. The washrooms near the administrative buildings at the entrance were closed when we were there, so use the ones up top if you need.

We walked down the road to Atzompa town. It took 40 minutes with two small complaining children (bring water, hats, shade umbrella if you can) and we were passed by one vehicle the entire time…a taxi, taking another small group up. I signaled to the driver to pick us up on his way down and he did, but we had reached the town by then. Another 200 pesos got us back to our rented apartment.

Note: it’s hot up there and there isn’t much shade. Get there as early as you possibly can and be prepared to walk down. Read the other posts on Atzompa as there is good information in there and certainly don’t walk up to the ruins from the town unless you enjoy hiking up steep roads. I wanted to buy pottery in town, but none of the pottery shops were open when I was there…I don’t know why.

This is one of the best places we visited in Oaxaca. Absolutely stunning, incredible views and not many visitors.

This is a smaller archeological site for those who want to a quicker view of some of the amazing Zapotecas ruins in the Oaxaca region. It's not as big as Monte Alban so its quite easy to visit and see the recent found ruins. Its also a bit of a climb to the top but its well worth it
