We went on this mezcal tour because of the maguey plants that originate in this part of Mexico. When we travel we like to immerse ourselves in the local culture and cuisine so a mezcal tour was definitely on our itinerary during our stay in Oaxaca. We visited 3 mezcal distilleries and each of them were phenomenal in taste. Because we visited in March we were there during havest season and got to experience the process of making mezcal from start to finish. Rene is a friendly and intelligent guide. We got to stop at a great lunch spot where they make tortillas and mole from scratch, which was delicious. Met up with some friends at the hotel afterwards who went on a different mezcal tour and when they tasted the mezcal we purchased on our tour they said it was smoother and better quality than the ones they tried. All in all would recommend this tour to anyone. It was a 10/10.

We went on two tours with Rene— the Magical Handicrafts Route, full day, and Monte Alban, half day— both excellent! Rene was knowledgeable about the culture of the area and the history. On the handicrafts tour, he selected excellent workshops to visit where we learned about the origins and the making of the various crafts— black pottery, carved and painted Cobal animals, and backstrap weaving. Unlike crafts tours we have taken in other countries, we did not feel pressured to buy. We enjoyed a walk through a regional market, and lunch at a country restaurant. We were only four people on the tour and enjoyed getting to meet the other two who were of Mexican heritage.
On the Monte Alban tour, we were a larger group, although still small by “tour” standards. Rene was knowledgeable, first in the museum and then on the site, explaining well and occasionally admitting that he did not know an answer. He kept us on a good pace, conscious of those who could not climb a particular monument. We traveled in a small van (two vans for Monte Alban), very comfortable. I highly recommend these two tours with Rene, and feel sure he is equally good on the other itineraries offered.

This is a no-brainer for when you'd want to book a tour around Oaxaca... We did the Mezcal-tour with Las Bugambillas Tours and had a great time: friendly and knowledgeable René took us to some of the most interesting Mezcal-palenques around Oaxaca, explained the process and hosted the tastings which were generous and provided a lot of insight.
One of the best days of our stay in OAX. Will sure book again for another tour next time around.

We loved everything about this tour. Rene was knowledgeable and explained everything about the process of making mezcal from beginning to end. The tastings were lots of fun and though there was no pressure, we happily purchased a few bottles. We also had a fantastic lunch at the restaurant that Rene brought us too. Wonderful day, great memories.

We did the Monte Alban tour and everything was great. Rene was able to give a lot of interesting information that we wouldn't have been able to grasp by just walking around by ourselves. He also was able to answer all of our many questions.

We did the Crafts, the Monte Alban and Mezcal Tours with René and the gang. All were fabulous! We would have never been able to see everything we did on our own. The whole crew was warm and professional! Great insight into what we were seeing and inside access to some great stuff! Highly, highly recommended!

The tour was a lot of fun. Rene is really knowledgable and all 3 distilleries were so different. I learned a lot about the process of making mezcal. The place they brought us for lunch was so delicious and inexpensive. Highly recommend when in Oaxaca.

I am very pleased with both tours that were booked with René and Las Bugambilias Tours. This was both my first visit to Mexico and the Oaxaca region, traveling with my spouse and a friend. We did the Mezcal Distillery tour and the half-day trip to Monte Albán. Both trips were amazing, informative. relaxing and fun. I would recommend the mezcal tour even if you do not drink much. The process is fascinating and you get to explore the agriculture of maguey (agave) and artisanal skill of the producers. Mezcal is probably as complex as wine making, and if you like mezcal, you will not be disappointed by the selections. Monte Albán is fantastic for those who enjoy history, archeology and natural beauty. Most importantly, René is an amazing host and he is as kind and knowledgeable as he looks . You can tell he loves to educate his clients about the Oxaca region and all it has to offer. The van is comfortable for several people and his driver, Javiere, was just as kind and helpful. I will go back to Oxaca and will try René's other tours. I absolutely recommend Las Bugambilias for anyone visiting Oxaca.
