The museum is a super place to start your vacation if you want to see some nice art or learn more about the rich Mayan culture on the island. The museum has art exhibits that change often and many of the works are for sale!!! It’s way more fun than one would think and really well presented.

This was a great way to spend a few hours and beat the heat. Very informative about the island history. We enjoyed the deity exhibit the most. We saw other references about them throughout the trip.

What a find. Great little museum. Everything perfectly presented; just enough information to absorb and not become tedious. The first place I've been to that puts a clear description of Mayan culture into a general historical context. Exactly what I had hoped for in the big Museo del Mundo Mayo in Merida, (but was woefully disappointed there, coming out with more questions than answers).

To be honest we entered the museum as we hadn't a proper itinerary organised for our time in Cozumel. Plus it was scorching hot outside so we said we would explore the museum. I was really pleasantly surprised. The museum is laid out well, a lot of research & money has been put into it. It gives a great insight into the island & the Yucatan penilsula. The museum has given me a great insight into the island which I will look into when I get home. To all visitors of Cozumel, support this museum, the island deserves it.

Surprisingly nice little museum that offers the history of Cozumel with exhibits, informational signs and small dioramas. It covers everything from the land and sea to the first Mayan settlers to the explorers who nearly wiped out the natives. The museum is clean and air conditioned and only US $7! It's at the southern end of town by the water allowing for easy access to markets and restaurants afterwards. Two small improvements would be a better toilet than the single room, one at a time with no seat on the toilet. Also, most relics are only labeled in Spanish. Definitely worth an hour and a $10 cab ride from Puerta Maya.

We spent about an hour at the museum looking at exhibits and narratives pertaining to the history of Cozumel island, from Mayan civilization to Spanish conquest. Interesting to note that Abraham Lincoln wanted to buy the island at one point, but the civil war took his attention to another direction. Furthermore, the Spanish brought smallpox with them, and the native population reduced from 70,000 or more to mere few hundreds. All in all, it was good but nothing in grand scale; could be replete with hundreds of artifacts, paintings and movies depicting Mayan life or Spanish colony. A footnote is that there is no taxi stand there, we had to walk more than a block to catch one.

Most of us are going to schedule a snorkeling tour before we go to the museum--but if you want to understand more about the Island of the Swallows (Cozumel), I strongly recommend this one! It is a surprisingly large museum for a small island, very modern and very informative. Most of the descriptive panels had English translations beneath the Spanish passages (for people like me who haven't yet mastered the language of the Island).
The experience begins with the geological creations of the Yucatan Peninsula and the island of Cozumel, and slowly builds up from there, looking at rock formation, plant life, animals, and the coming of humans. Archaeological finds are displayed alongside dioramas and fascinating cross-cut suggestions of what cenotes and beaches would look like.
As the pottery and artifacts become more and more recognizable (with the progress of humans), the museum spends a good amount of time and space on the Mayans, especially their goddesses, gods, agriculture, and temples--one room in particular has a sound-and-light show of a temple that is fascinating! There's even an outdoor plaza with a Mayan-style, thatch-roofed hut, complete with a raised garden (growing real herbs), well, kitchen area for grinding and cooking corn, and a real tree bearing fruit. There is also a replica of a Mayan canoe.
After the Mayan segment, the museum spends even more time on the coming of the Spaniards, how their Christianity was woven into the culture, and then Mexico's independence. Helpful timelines cover most of the important eras--I was so pleased to see how Cozumel welcomed refugees from the Caste Wars. The last parts of the museum reviewed the coming of tourism culture and the very real challenges the island faces due to global warming (the reefs are still struggling since the desolation wrought by Hurricane Wilma).
My only disappointment with the museum wasn't the museum at all--it was the gift shop. The lady who ran it was wonderful, but had to admit that they sold nothing connected to the goddess Ix Chel and carried no books. The kind of tourists who will forego a few hours in the surf to explore a museum are EXACTLY the kind who will want to follow up with books about the history, biodiversity, and peoples of Cozumel, this is a lost opportunity for the museum AND its patrons. Still--GO! And take a lot of pictures -- they're allowed.

Very nice, compact museum offering interesting snapshots of the island over many hundreds of years. We spent 1.5 hours here, with four adults and two small kids, and we all found aspects of it interesting. The interactive screens and games were particularly welcome to get the kids interested in the various topics. Don't forget to look upstairs, too!

We were on a Royal Caribbean cruise and did not have any planned activities in Cozumel. We walked down the main highway for about 30 minutes and noticed the Museum across the road. It was a hot afternoon and it was nice to go into the cool museum for a couple of hours. Admission was $10 per person.

How easy is it to walk from Cruise ship docking?
Skrevet 22. januar 2016
This is an old question, but in case it's useful to someone - relatively easy. The museum is about half a mile from the cruise ship dock. The directions are easy - you just walk along the oceanfront main road (Avenida Rafael E. Melgar) until you reach the museum.
