!!!!!I didnt listen to the reviews. !!!!!
Tulum is a scam. Extremely expensive. Overpriced. More expensive than places like LA or NY. Public beaches: Pay, Parking; Pay, Dollar conversion in Tulum 20-30 % lower than most other tourist areas. It’s all a money grab. Don’t do it!

It is a paradise. Beach is blue and beautiful. The ruins are a place you can’t miss. Please just avoid the scammers and sellers.

The hotel itself was good, but the taxis were extremely expensive, making getting around a hassle. Additionally, the drinks were way overpriced at $25 each, and they tasted like they had zero alcohol. The food was also very expensive, which added to the overall disappointment. While the accommodations were nice, the high costs and poor quality of the drinks and food were disappointing. Some of the bars and restaurants were empty every single night I was there.

Our first and last time in Tulum. Is over rated, very expensive and not a place to go with small children. Very poor nothing like it shows in advertisement. If you don’t book with a hotel or resort you are basically have to pay an enormous amount of money to find a restaurant with beach access which by the way is dirty! Nothing compare to what you see on interne, lots of algae, plastic, etc if you are one of the people that gets an air b and b, you will pay for every activity ranging from $80 a person per activity, if can imagine at the end of each day you will be paying around $350 or more per person each day! Crazy amount for such an ugly and poor environment. If you are planing to go to Cancun or Olaya del Carmen is better to book with a resort that has has all inclusive. Ohhh and when you get off the plane , at the airport they will try to sell you packages of the activities which are around $1500 for a family of 6 for one day with the catch that you go the next day at a hotel with free breakfast. Well guess what? It’s time share, don’t go. They will keep you there for 5 hours trying their hardest for you to buy time share for a ridiculous amount of money. Overall this is a place I will not recommend at all!

Tulum beach is stunning, with white sand, palm trees & turquoise water. No need for beach shoes as the sand is really soft. However, the road to the beach is completely lined with hotel after hotel to the point where you cannot see the sea at all. And that road is incredibly hot, dirty, busy, heavily trafficked and full of potholes. It's very uncomfortable and not the peaceful place we were anticipating.
We stayed at a tranquil beach hotel (Cabañas Tulum Beach Hotel), which was beautiful and a total dream, with its own private area on the beach - and once on the property, it felt different and we loved it there. However, leaving the hotel to go up the road for a meal or Tulum ruins was awful. Taxis are insanely pricey too, so you're kind of stuck where you are unless you brave the hear and cycle or walk. We cycled to the ruins in the morning, and it was so incredibly hot we wished we had forked out the $1200mxn for a taxi.
There was a little bit of sargassum seaweed when we were there, but some very hard-working people did their best to manually remove it and it wasn't bad at all.
If you intend to stay at a beach hotel, do your research - we walked past some hotels on the beach that played incredibly loud, awful club music all day; not really what going to Tulum beach should be about. We wanted to hear the waves roll in & wind rustling in the palm trees - which is all we had at the beautiful Cabañas- but we read lots of reviews before booking as we didn't want any noise.
As per other reviews, prices are high at Tulum Beach. We knew that before we arrived, but it was a bit of a shock to the system after having stayed in land.

Our decision to visit Cancun and Tulum was inspired by our positive experiences in other parts of Mexico, like Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. As avid DIY travelers who enjoy immersing ourselves in local culture and cuisine, our trip to Cabo in 2020 left a lasting impression. We navigated from the airport to our Airbnb via bus, explored on foot, savored street food, and engaged with locals—each moment enriching our journey.
Anticipating a similar experience, we sought advice from others familiar with Tulum. Unfortunately, Tulum fell short of our expectations. Public beach access was mostly taken over by hotels, restaurants, and exclusive clubs, leaving little space for locals on designated public areas.
Our disappointment grew upon discovering the steep prices in Tulum, far exceeding what we're used to in the Bay Area. A meal at a Mex-Jap restaurant cost nearly $60 USD for two rice bowls, with hefty tips expected. This prompted us to rent bicycles and venture downtown for more affordable dining, despite our desire to stay near the beach in the hotel zone.
Attempting to walk from the hotel zone to downtown turned into a challenging trek along a humid highway, taking nearly two hours to reach the bike rental. Despite setbacks, we tried to make the most of our time.
However, our plans to visit the ruins were disrupted by strict rules requiring us to discard a plastic water bottle. Coupled with reports of sewage issues affecting cenote cleanliness, our experience was less than ideal. By the second day, my wife suffered from diarrhea, likely due to contaminated food or water.
Overall, our visit to Tulum was eventful, though not as expected. It highlighted that Tulum's isolated and exclusive vibe doesn't cater well to average travelers seeking authentic local experiences.
In summary, while Tulum may appeal to those seeking luxury and picturesque spots (which, frankly, weren't worth it for us), our trip was disappointing and expensive. It doesn't align with our travel preferences and values, and we're unlikely to return.

I'm thinking of going to Tulum in December ...Is seaweed still that bad where you can't swim in ocean? We were thinking of staying Nueva Vida De Ramiro?
Skrevet 4. november 2019
December they said it’s high season so no seaweed it’s clear blue water.
Skrevet 6. november 2019
Yes all the yucatan Peninsula is really safe apart from some slangs in cancun city which is kind of far from the touristic area but tulum playa and bacalar among small towns. you are more than safe.

In October we are going on a cruise and doing the Tulum ruins excursion when we stop in Cozumel. Our main focus is the ruins but we were hoping to get in the water for a little bit just off the back of the ruins. Should we not even plan to do that? I do not have much knowledge of the Sargassum seaweed, is there a chance it will get better by then? This will help me with what to pack for the day. Thank you in advance.
Skrevet 22. august 2019
It suppose to be better in That season but nature is impredictible. I do hope is better still there are another options like tje cenotes you can visit for the day you arr there.
Skrevet 8. september 2019
We are planning to visit Tulum from 8th to 11th Aug, 2019. The seaweed news around has confused us on our visit.
Will most of the Tulum beaches be affected by seaweed and not worth visiting? Is there any beach which will not be affected? Please suggest looking at the current situation, will Playa Del Carmen be better incase Tulum is bad.
Thanks is advance for your help

I am currently in Tulum, from what I have heard and seen most beaches are covered in seaweed. This is a problem in the entire region not just Tulum. This being said YES it is still worth it! Have a realistic expectation and be open to experiencing more then the beach. There are beautiful cenotes to swim, ruins to visit, and culture/food to eat. If it's just the beach and blue water your looking for go somewhere else. Others will enjoy the area with less crowds.

We pre-paid for a rental from Avis but I'm seeing horrible reviews. Will the fraud activity not occur since we have already paid for the car?
Skrevet 27. mars 2019
The fraud acticity is not just from Avis.... And the fraud itself is this: You rent a car, you do not take extensive pictures of the vehicle and when you return it, you are pressed for time, scared to miss your flight and boom, it takes one dishonest person sometimes 2 to make your day a living hell. I was once charged the whole cost of a fiat. Imagine 18000usd appearing on your credit card overnight ahah not fun but I solved the matter free of charge, I had an employee returning the vehicle 2 days later and they tried to say there was all this damage.
TAKE 2 ADVICES: PURCHASE THE TOP INSURANCE THAT COMES WITH THAT CAR FROM AVIS.
DO NOT BUY THIRD PARTY CAR INSURANCE BEFORE YOUR TRIP.
UNITED STATES OR CANADA THIRD PARTY INSURANCE MEANS YOU AREN'T DEALING WITH THE MEXICAN INSURANCES AND LAWS DIRECTLY!
It is worth to buy that super expensive insurance, my boss crashed a jeep into a palm tree(FREE). They do not look at the vehicle when you return it.

I've been reading that it's dangerous renting a car to travel around with, like from cancun airport to tulum, did you notice anything during your stay?
