The whole experience was brilliant! From being picked up at our hotel at 8am to being dropped off at 4.30pm! David was friendly and chatty throughout the whole day, very knowledgeable and happy to talk about a variety of topics. His speaking and understanding of English was very good!!
We walked through the old part of the wall first, then down around the Army Barracks. Finally we walked up through a newer restored section. It was so good to be able to compare the different sections of the wall.
We had a great day! It was the perfect bucket list trip! We would highly recommend!
Thank you David!

The wall at Jinshanling was amazing! The weather was cold and clear, and our small tour of 8 was the only people there. The 3.5 mile walk was more challenging than I expected, some steep ups and downs and no short cuts or ways out once you start. Just make sure you have good shoes, a snack or 2, and a bit of stamina. I highly recommend it!

Most tourist use their layover time between flights to visit the wall close to Beijing, crowding the area on short batches of time. There why this further away section of the wall have quite less amount of visitors by being off these visitors' race-rat track. One requires a couple full days to include the Simatai section as well and visit other close atractions worth the trip. The whole trip would take four days to doing confortably without a rush. It's 2 hours aways from the Beijing Int Airport on a easy private ride that a hotel might include as part of their service for an extra cost. Going by bus is inexpensive requiring more time due the trsansfers to the bus station. I travel on the Golden Week, deciding to hire a private car do all the craziness going on. It cost me US$90 which was a little over the price but fair considering the holidays involved. Sharing the ride would make it worth it avoiding wasting time and shorting the trip considerably.
Despise the Golden Week, There weren't as many people as I would expected, having most of my photos with few people around as wished. October result a great time to visit China with the weahter being quite brutal hot, so be aware of the weather as there is only protection when on the towers. One can find food and drinks inside the towers in modest quantities and variaty so bring local cash to pay for drinks as water runs short always. You can even find Ice cream! An no Wi-Fi app translator is a must!

Haven’t been to Badaling but the views here are amazing! It was an exhilarating walk, it too difficult but not easy. There were some other tourists but not a lot. I love the mix between restored and wild wall. A must do! We hired a company (Jinshanling Great Wall Morning Hiking Tour) which gave lunch after the tour. It was excellent.

We did a day trip to Jinshanling from Beijing as part of a 3 week trip to China. That day was the absolute highlight of the holiday. The scenery was breathtaking, the autumn colours stunning and there were so few people around. We were also very fortunate with the weather on the day we were there, 23 October, we were in T-shirts, the sun was out, the sky clear blue, we could see for miles - the perfect setting to see the Great Wall in its full glory.
The journey from Beijing took about 2 hours in a private minibus. We hiked from the West Gate to the East Gate, which took just under 4 hours although that did include frequent photo stops, pauses to admire the view and also, at times, a chance to get our breath back after a clamber up a particularly steep bit or to brace ourselves for the next climb! Those challenging sections went towards making it such an amazing experience. I would not recommend the walk unless you are fit. Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes and bring plenty of water although you can buy water and souvenirs along the route.

came here to see fall colors, but was disappointed to find out leaves fell off a week before I came.
But that didn't stop me from enjoying my trek here. This piece of landscape is beautiful in itself, add to that the fact that there's barely anyone walking with you. The hike should be considered easy, but it definitely hurt my knees, I'm about 175cm high and 90kgs, with may laptop on my backpack, so maybe I had it coming. in some points the views were sweeping, you can see tower after tower, laid in an endless landscape. Sunset made it even more special, when the entire place were bathed in gold, then took on different shades of blue and magenta. Sunrise were just as special, not sure which one's more exhilarating to watch.
going there, I tried to follow the instructions found on web : head to wangjingxi and take the bus, but as mentioned by someone here, they stopped operating since November 1, and won't be back until spring, could be sometime after march or April. Anyway, in wangjingxi bus station there was this one guy offering shared ride service (note: this is illegal, follow at your own risk) for 50 rmb, and after more than hour's ride we arrived at the Jinshanling service station. From there, I took a cab for another 50 rmb (he initially offered 100 rmb, but I thought it's only 20kms, apparently it's just 5kms) I arrived at the entrance, paid the fees then hiked the place.
For lodging, there's many locals offering their houses for about 150 - 200 rmb, depending on how far from the entrance it is and what is being offered. I paid 180 for mine, there was room heating and hot water, hard bed and sheets.
would love to visit this again in the future.

Forget about Badaling or Mutianyu. Jinshanling is the part of the Great Wall you should visit. It is absolutely gorgeous. However, getting there could be a challenge. I went to Wanjinxi, trying to catch the bus to Jinshanling, but was told that the bus no longer stopped at the Jinshanling service area. The bus only went from Wanjinxi directly to Luanping. I had to share the ride with three other people in a small vehicle to the Jinshanling service area, then took a transfer to my hotel outside Jinshanling Great Wall. Hope other people could find a better and cheaper way to get to the location.

Hello,
I’m looking at going to Jinshanling however I have read somewhere that the buses stop from 15/11/19. We were planning on going 25/11/19. If anyone could give us an idea on how the best way to get there is without using private transfer that would be great!

Sorry I can't help with that as we had a tour guide who arranged our transportation. However, our tour guide was terrific and may answer your question just because she's nice if you reach out to her. Her name is Sunflower and her mobile is 86 136 8114 1982

Bonjour,

When we visited, all the food shops were closed. We regretted not having brought some fruit or nuts for energy on the go. I would certainly check with your guide before you start whether or not they know places to stop and eat when you come off the wall.

Hello everybody, I would like to hike from Jinshaling to Simatai. Then from Simatai go to Chengde. Do you know if from Simatai there are any means of transportation to Chengde?
Thank you,

Hi Pierre, I haven't found an answer and I changed my plan. My trip was from Chengde to Jinshanling and then Beijing. When I was in Jinshanling the route for Simatai was closed as I've read in some blogs, I tried to reach Gubeikou but also that route was closed so I just climbed Jinshanling. Anyway, if you want to go to Chengde from Jinshanling, there should be some buses but I do not know their schedule and where the bus stop is. I did Chengde - Luanping (here I was supposed to take a bus for Jinshanling but there were no buses that day and I just took a private car (150 cny two persons)) - Jinshanling - Beijing. If you need any other information, do not hesitate to ask!

Hi everyone! I am planning to visit the Jinshanling section the second week in April 2018. I'm a photographer and would really love to photograph this section either right when it opens at 6 a.m. or later in the afternoon/evening before it closes to get the nice light (the golden hour :) My concern is it seems like most of the transportation options arrive later in the morning and leave around 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. If I take the bus there midday and stay until close is there a good option for getting back to Beijing in the evening? Are there buses back to a subway or train line? Appreciate any suggestions or insights! Thanks!
