Me encanta!!

I just returned from a ten day trip to Oaxaca in southern Mexico, staying in Playa Zipolite also referred to as Playa de la Muerte reasons that will become clear.
This is a remote, former hippie colony of sorts "discovered" by international travelers and folks from the US and Canada in the 1960's. It was a difficult place to get to from most of the world making it a haven for dropouts, backpackers, nudists and naturists. Since then the town has grown significantly, legalizing nudity on the beach, and getting a paved road, the Adoquin which is lined with small shops, 3-4 story motels, hotels and lots of eateries.
The crescent beach of soft golden sand is about 2 kilometers long with beautiful, craggy headlands at each end and backed by low hills. It's quite picturesque with islets and sea mounts dotting the Pacific and often has big waves topping eight to ten feet. The beach and sea are beautiful with very warm water but also dangerous. The vegetation is sub tropical and tropical not unlike other dry areas along the Pacific coast: Hot, humid, dusty and dry.
Food is a big draw in Oaxaca. Raw ingredients are often quite good and preparation and execution exceptional. You will have lots of dining options to enjoy while there as well as two really good bakeries, a couple cafes, a deli with good wine, cheese and meat choices and a slew of street food vendors with locally sourced and made tortillas and tacos. I had some very good meals including some remarkable Pacific shrimp and Dorado and two memorable meals - one breakfast and one dinner at the western end of the beach. Nothing like having three breakfasts one morning while intermittently swimming naked (one needs to be clothed while dining) and hanging out with friends.
Getting around is easy as cabs are plentiful and cheap and cabbies though often not bilingual, are very helpful and accommodating. The Collectiva, a truck with benches is even cheaper and serves coastal towns.
Afternoon and evening strolls along the Adoquin are a ritual as is perusing the many goods brought to the street by local merchants. From jewelry to blankets to wood products, Oaxacan's are skilled craftspeople. I spoke with two guys building beds on the road, all with hand tools. They were lovely.
Unfortunately, this region is not like other areas of the pacific coast that are well preserved and taken care of. The town has a trash problem as does most of Oaxaca. Beautiful winding mountains roads too and from the gorgeous Huatulco airport are littered with construction debris, trash, garbage and waste. The same is true in Zipolite. Be careful not to fall into a hole in the sidewalk.
And most of Oaxaca smells like human waste as does much of Mexico due to rudimentary waste systems and the absence of traps in their plumbing systems.

Playa Del Amor, at the east end of the beach and hidden between three rock outcroppings is an intimate setting with two coves with a couple stands where one can get cocktails, rent chairs and an umbrella for little money. Sadly, Playa del Amor was overrun while I was there, filled with urban men playing competing, amplified music, having loud conversations and engaging in sex while being waited on by Oaxacan youth. It was an unpleasant, in your face unofficial circuit party.
An area around the corner, out of view of the main beach has been a refuge for lovers for decades but that was not the case this visit: the police began patrolling the cove the second day I was there and their presence became more noticeable as the week progressed and revelers s became more brazen and grew in numbers. Men were threatened with arrest or fined on site, on more than one occasion, for engaging in public group sex. I encourage any and all visitors - all of us outsiders - to respect local cultural norms and the Oaxacan's whose home this is.
The late afternoon ritual of watching the sunset at this beach became an annoying, loud scene after the first visit.
By the way, back on Zipolite, there are an average of fifty drownings per year, half of what is was years ago prior to the creation of a great volunteer rescue squad. These folks are committed and often show up within seconds when someone is in distress but they are not always present. The currents and sea floor are quite unusual as the worst rip tides are often close to shore and the sea bed is undulating , unpredictably shallow then quite deep. I watched two people get rescued on one afternoon. Both had not been in water more than 5 feet deep but were literally swept away in the riptide .....in seconds.
Add to that, the rapid development of rental units stacked on top of each other (developed mostly by Americans) is overtaking the hills behind the beach. Over development, exploitation by airbnb and the promotion of this very sweet town is a danger to the village and this region.
Though I loved the ocean, the food and enjoyed my time with friends and locals at Ziploite, I'm not sure I'll return.

Top notch long, soft sand surf beach, cool vibe, decent pricing on food and drinks, easily accessible, area is walkable. Full recommendation but a couple of things people should know,

Lodging in the area is everything from a tent lot to world class, so there’s something for everyone but we found a few of the places we looked at were very rough so watch for current reviews preferably from multiple sites when booking ahead of time.

Also this is the only nude beach in Mexico we were told and it’s a little different from what we experienced in Europe or British Columbia where it’s a broad cross section of people from all demographics. There were definitely some naturalist type people just enjoying freedom but we found it to be hugely tilted to the gay-dude side of things so be prepared for loads of penises,
all over, here, there, up, down, penises for days.
Running up and down the beach, doing extended yoga sessions, standing around with the leg up on things, Tussling and tickling, getting oiled up,
penises everywhere.
Old, young, lots of waxed, lasered, sugared penises and testicles.

That being said there was nothing obscene happening and lots of family’s were on the beach and service was good, just something to be prepared for.

Sunset is visible over the ocean on this beach which is nice, and in the evening the street turns to a circus of characters doing various acts for money and selling handmade goods,

There it is, definitely not the worst place to spend a few days!

Note: Trip advisor made me use the words “penis” and “testicles”

There is a small town and the water is easy to walk and play in. Unlike a lot of beaches in the area there is not as much undertow and high waves. It is a full nude beach be aware.

Absolutely no masks whatsoever in the whole town.
Plenty of rebels without causes.
Covid fishbowl.
Too cool to care about protocols, unlike Oaxaca City or Baja.

The sand is great, the water is perfect, nudity is enjoyed without judgement. The best part is that you can observe both the sunset and the sunrise and they are both stunning! There are plenty of places to eat, drink and get a massage right on the beach!

first rated beach, with great walking and swimming. Of course, one needs to be careful for the rip tide, but watching the water and asking other will help. Don’t go in if you had to much to drink or smoke.for the naked part, open and enjoy, nothing better then the human body free and alive. Enjoy
