Treated our grandchildren to a day on the watercress line. Parked at Ropeley where we walked on the Harry Potter bridge, visited the education centre, the train themed playground and engine sheds. The stationmaster was very helpful and the station was immaculate. We got treats from the buffet car, caught the train to Alton and watched the engine turn around, then got out at Alresford to visit the market. The shop at Alresford station had reasonable pocket money toys and we got ice cream in the cafe before getting the diesel shuttle back to Ropeley. Our 3 year old granddaughter cried because she didn't want to leave.

What a fantastic day out went with our two dogs, rode the line and could have kept riding it until the place shut.
Stopped off for lunch at station cafe oh my goodness their jacket potatoes are delicious and talk about value for money good thing my husband was able to finish mine. Totally dog friendly and the chef even came out to give our dogs a treat. Thank you for a wonderful day out!

We had a lovely visit. started at Arlesford station. Allow enough time to park and sort your parking ticket (as well as paying for the car park at the machine/ring go, visit the booking office or information office at Alresford station to collect a parking voucher). We took the Ropley shuttle and had a look round Ropley - we went to the Harry potter bridge then to see the carriage works before getting the train to Alton. We had a short stop at Alton before going back to Ropley, this time for our picnic, okay area, shop and the viewing gallery (various childrens activities here eg toy trains to play with). The knitted displays were wonderful. We then came back to Arlesford and visited the shop and station buffet. It's a bigger shop at Arlesford.

A very welcoming and friendly railway, with excellent stations and good rolling stock. Great for a family day out with lots to do and very good value

Cracking day out, lots for the kids to do and not busy.
Staff were friendly. Kids loved the play area and the snake/reptile handling experience (think the first time they’ve done it).
Refreshments a little over priced but can understand as it is trying to raise money every way it can.
Excellent day out!

We opted for an evening ‘Watercress Belle’ Dining train rather than then Sunday lunch ‘Royal Wessex’.
( Mostly as our dog settles more in the evenings)
It is fine dining with appropriate menu, the food being prepared off the train by an events caterer. The young lady looking after us was polite but not interactive with the guests -
Waiting staff are provided by the catering company. They are not able to answer any questions re the railway and its history. There are uniformed Watercress line staff on the train who can assist.
Overall experience is very good watching the views from the carriage windows, especially as the 1950’s era seating is double bolstered (two cushions) so it’s easy to be relaxed.
The trains are marketed with a diffential price between 2 seats bays and 4 seats bays which you might have to share with people you haven't met.
The choice is part of what you want from the evening. Coach ‘Sylvia’ is marked as 2 x 2 seats only
The service is best described as measured as the train completes 4 trips Between Alresford and Alton. Leaving at 1915 and returning at 2230.
The service runs in conjunction with a Real Ale Train which is passed variously at Ropley and Medstead as the evening progresses.
We ran to Medstead on 2nd trip as there was some delays, and the Beer train needs to connect at Alton with a SWR train to Waterloo.
The coffee/tea was rather slow at the end of the evening and no refills!
Overall rated 4.5 out of 5.

Some helpful volunteers but some rather rude. Parking is impossible with a campervan at Alresford so go to one of the other stations. Stations beautifully kept, nice tea in the cafe. Interesting history. Pick your seat carefully some were grubby especially the seat backs at head height.

I've booked a romantic dinner on the Watercress Line.
Someone in their infinite wisdom had a whimsical notion, let's change it to a murder mystery.
Well if the Watercress Line had firstly asked their clientele if they all agreed to to this, they would at least have had one resounding "No".
If you're going to be having a murder mystery then advertise it as such.
Don't force it on your customers and say well if you don't like it we can give you a refund!
It was something that we were really looking forward to.
Now instead of a nice romantic meal, all we've got the sour taste of disappointment.
You should in my humble opinion be ashamed of yourselves.

Dear Ray,
We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your experience with us. As we explained at the time, unfortunately due to a lower number of bookings than usual we made the difficult decision to change two of our Watercress Belle dates to Murder Mystery Dining dates. Any customers already booked were contacted at least 2 months in advance of their booking to be made aware of this change and given the option to keep their booking, change the date or receive a refund. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, I understand you chose to move your booking to a new date, we hope you have a fantastic evening with us.

We didn't ride the train so this about a visit to see the trains and station. We enjoyed seeing the steam train arrive and depart. The station is well kept and the information on how things would have been done when the station master lived there e.g. how vegetables would have been grown on site for example is interesting. Also the information about how busy station was when it was a mainline station. The shop was closed when we were there so cannot comment on that. There is a cafe on site and toilets. There is also an area above the incoming line with picnic benches from which one can watch the train movements

Shocking. Went on the real ale train and they ran out of food and ale. We prepaid for food and can’t actually redeem the ticket (we were told the food coupon we had, had no monetary value). To run out of ale on an ale train is just insane! Will be expecting a refund!

A family member is looking to get married is it possible to hire for a wedding venue? If so what would this include?
Skrevet 6. juni 2023
From our experience I would give it a miss. You would likely get let down, as we did on our day out.

Are there toilets on the train or only at the stops? Thankyou
Skrevet 12. april 2021
As far as I can recall whilst we are in Lockdown/reduced numbers all Heritage train toilets are shut but the platform ones remain open .

Hi, have tickets for the illuminations departing 2030 from Alton. What time will the train arrive back at Alton? Just need to make sure we can get our other train connections. Thank you

Hi there, yes there is a car park at Alresford station, it is £1.50 for the whole day or free Sundays and Bank Holidays. Disabled parking available. The machine only accepts coins.

Hi there, currently we have 2 itineraries, the trip from Alton is 2 and a half hours while the trip from Alresford is 3 hours. Both include a stop at Ropley to explore our largest station and engineering hub and both take you back to your starting station. More information is available on our website.

In Alresford there is an excellent selection of old coaching inns.
