Marketed by Winchester Tourism as a trail "for all the family", we were distressed to find that this doesn't include adult wheelchair users! The trail along the River Alre itself was beautiful and had ducks and swans gliding up and down, but there were frequent sections of the riverbank which had fallen into the river, with quite a few potholes which narrowed the path so much, in places dangerously so. I was forced to get up from my wheelchair and try to navigate round these, not easy when one can barely walk. There are also large stinging nettles overhanging the path and I was only too glad to have worn trousers on a very warm day. One passing gentleman did remark that he thought that repairs were in the offing. Pity they hadn't been done before we got there as it really made the trail far more exhausting for me than we had expected and we wouldn't have gone had we known how challenging it was.

Great walks along the chalk rivers where you can see the trout swimming and taking flies from the surface. Ducks and swans live on the river, along with coot and moorhen. The people you meet are friendly, you may become hoarse from saying "good morning", but its a delight.

We started our walk with the Alre Valley trail and extended for a 9.4 walk called the Watercress walk for a circular longer walk. The area is beautiful.
One problem with our extended walk, there is a sign that reads you are walking in a firing range...I don't know if this is new, but it is alarming, not something one wants to walk through.

The Alre Valley - Millennium Trail begins in the Village Station Yard where parking is available, from here we followed the local history display boards for The Millennium Trail through the Alresford village, we passed by the weekly street market, the old fire station, and lots of old historical houses and shops on the way to the river walk.
Along the horse chestnut and alder trees pathway next to the River Aire, is a 13th century thatched timber framed Fulling Mill and eel house. There is also a pretty Memorial Garden and pick-nick area.
We just did the river walk and feed the ducks and swans from Amy’s duck food station. At the end of the path, we reached the bottom of The Dean, which is a shortcut back to town. If you want to continue on the Millennium or Alre Valley Trails, turn right and follow the river along the footpath, there are some 60 miles of paths and tracks, many of these are hundreds of years old.
TIP: The river walk is about one mile and is suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs.

Walked the full trail with the best part being along the river. Full of birds, ducks and swans it’s a lovely walk with crystal clear water and trout just going against the flow. Well worth doing but wear your boots as can be muddy in parts. Nice area for children to feed the ducks too.

An excellent walk to explore the history of Alresford with a section of the walk along the Alre- a crystal clear chalkstream With the chance to spot numerous fish
Favourite bits are Fulling mill and the eel house
Amy’s duck food station was awesome- haven’t seen that anywhere else and it was great

This short and gentle riverside walk is a must whenever we have visitors who don`t know the area. As well as the delightful riverside section, including the old fulling mill, the full circuit takes you up Broad Street and gives a great introduction to Alresford and its interesting buildings. Add a visit to the churchyard to see the graves of Napoleonic prisoners of war and perhaps continue to the station for a look at the steam locomotives
If you are feeling thirsty for a really decent coffee, go along East Street out of the town for a few hundred metres and you`ll find the excellent Long Barn cafe on the left hand side

Really lovely walk around the duck pond. The kids thoroughly enjoyed feeding the ducks and we loved that there was duck food to purchase for a donation for a local girl called Amy who has disabilities. I love that she and her family have created their feeding station - well done.
Wish I had a dog, there were so many and they were just loving life and having a little paddle at the shallow end.
It is narrow on the lanes so social distancing is incredibly difficult. Can't be helped and no possible way of making paths wider so it's an FYI for anyone if they have health concerns.

Enjoyed a very peaceful but scenic walk following the trail. Starting in Alresford town and walking down past the old mill with the bristling river fantastically clear. Will return to do it again in springtime.
