Currently featuring a photography exhibition. Interesting pictures from Ya Ha Tinda horse ranch in Alberta. Very interesting Banff and Alberta history. $12 entrance fee for adults.

Good for a cold day. It was not in our plans but the cold canceled all our activities. We were pleasantly surprised we really enjoyed all the landscape scenes photos in particular. The historical side about the history of area was interesting as well and had activities like coloring books and puzzles to do. Only took about 1.5 hours to see everything

I went in looking for a book in their bookstore and ended up spending a couple of hours. Well lit, attractive, easy to read exhibits that don't make you look through glares on glass on bend over to read small print. A variety of topics including local history, culture, natural sciences and art. A docent even offered a short lecture about a room of paintings that greatly enhanced the experience. Well worth your time, although not sure that children until teen years would get anything out of it. Easily accessible in town with a municipal lot nearby.

Meh it was ok, not much to see because half of it was closed. Thank god we only paid $5 to get in. Little gift shop at the front. Ok for a rainy day

This is an absolutely incredible museum, and would recommend to everyone visiting Banff. When I was there they had a great art exhibit called “For the birds”, which was brilliant, plus their permanent displays about the history of the Rockies. There are also some amazing stories about women explorers, which is great to see. I also thoroughly recommend the gift shop - easily the best selection of books about the area, exploration, the arctic and related topics I’ve been to on my trip.

When I visited there were three main themes: a bird art exhibition, tourism history, and the Whytes own paintings. All were great visually. I was a bit disappointed in the tourism one as the view broadcast was: "we came here and we found this and now will bring everyone to see it." Little concern about those who were here for 10,000 years and knew all about it.

This was a delightful diversion during a rainstorm. Museum is small but features both an art exhibit and a section on history. It was a decent way to pass time as both were well done

I am not sure why I did not like this museum as much as the prior reviewers, but I found it small, the exhibits too packed with information that I did not find interesting, and expensive for what it offered. A whole room (about 1/4 of the museum) was devoted to horseback riding history in the region. Maybe some might find that interesting, but I wasn't. Half of the museum includes paintings, but not of Banff or the surrounding areas. I thought maybe the artists were local Banff residents, but did not see any indication of that to be the case.
The Whytes, who started the museum, do have impressively thorough catalogues of photos of the region. If you're willing to pour through the binders of photos and other materials in the Archives room, that can be interesting, but not for young children or the typical tourist. $12.50 pp.
Be aware that you have to put all bags drinks (even water), strollers, etc. in a storage locker to enter the museum.

We enjoyed the museum for its diverse exhibits. Our favorite was a temporary one, For the birds. The docent who led a 15-minute tour was quite good. We liked that the museum had so much that was about life in the area from long ago to more recent and a mixture of audio/video, hands on, as well as artifacts. It was a nice break from the overwhelming crowds in the Banff Town Center. The gift shop had a lot of great items, including books and art. Very reasonable price to get in.
