It is a beautiful location and has stunning scenery but for some reason Fairmont has limited access to the hotel to guests only until 25 January which is very disappointing.

My husband and I stayed at the Fairmont as part of our belated honeymoon, travelling across BC. The hotel and location are both outstanding, with everything finished to 5* standard. We were lucky enough to canoe on Lake Louise, a once in a lifetime opportunity

Hotel looks nice and is located on the lake louise, you can also go here for something to eat or drink. Even if you are not a guest of the hotel.

This is sort of a weird property - some good, and a decent about of bad. First the good - the location is good. The foot of the lake is spectacular, and it's a great vista. Also, the service at the hotel was definitely solid.
But there's a surprising amount of bad. First, the location is a double-edged sword. There's not much to do around the Lake other than a few nice hiking trails, and getting in and out of the immediate area can be really time-consuming. This location is where everyone wants to be, so get ready for the crowds.
Second, the food is pretty mediocre. I expected it to be pricey and it was. But I also expected better quality and choices - if you aren't a red-meat / game eater, your choices are surprisingly limited. This prompted us to want to go elsewhere for dinner, but again, getting in and out is annoyingly crowded and time-consuming.
Third, the hotel is - unsurprisingly - outrageously busy and crowded, including the grounds around the hotel. It's a beautiful location, but don't expect "peaceful." It's just constant busload after busload of people being dropped off and the area can't reasonably support that much car and foot traffic.
And fourth, probably the worst thing - the hotel is incredibly badly designed. While some rooms have good views, there are almost no good views from the lobby. Want to grab an early morning cup of coffee and enjoy the view? Too bad! Sure, there's a patio with a handful of plastic chairs and two (two!!) Adirondack chairs, but it's bizarrely haphazardly thrown together. There are portable firepits on the patio, but no fires going... on a beautiful and cool summer night? How about some permanent firepits that are actually running? The lobby is dark and cavernous, almost like they forgot that there's an amazing view just around the corner. It's the strangest layout ever. There are some good views from some restaurants, but mostly the big windows look out over the driveway. What a very strange choice. If someone were building in that location today, I'd expect light and bright, embracing the views, with well-planned outdoor space. This feels badly in need of a major and total renovation.

Bucket List trip for sure! We stayed here and the lake was still frozen; you were able to hike out on the lake, which was a unique experience.
Had a drink looking out the iconic window before dinner at the Louiza (def recommend), and we had tea the next day. Loved every minute. Great room, staff and atmosphere

This hotel is the most ideal spot for a breathtaking winter vacation!
In the winter, the Chateau is quiet and peaceful with excellent staff to meet the needs of guests and provide a relaxing, “we can help you with anything” kind of customer service. It was nothing like the hectic summer season when there are throngs of large tour groups at the hotel.
It is amazing how much there is to do in the winter, especially if you enjoy winter sports. Just outside the hotel is ice skating, cross country skiing, paths to walk across the lake, snowshoeing, and horse-drawn sleigh rides (the evening ride was stunning!) The hotel had excellent and reasonably priced equipment rentals right at the lobby and provided a shuttle to Lake Louise Ski Resort (for skiing, tubing, or just visiting). Just 1 km away via a pretty walking path was a dogsledding experience that was not only fun, but provided a way to really appreciate the gorgeous scenery.
It was not my first visit to Chateau Lake Louise, but was the first winter visit and we stayed 5 nights. The waitstaff and hostesses at the restaurants treated us like friends. Gracious assistance was provided by the bellstaff and front desk personnel whenever we had a need. I was absolutely amazed at the customer service extended to us.
TRANSPORTATION – We chose to take the Brewster shuttle from Calgary airport instead of driving, but since the weather turned out nice we might have enjoyed renting a car. It would have made it easier to get to casual dining options (just a few in the Lake Louise area, with no food/pizza delivery options) and would have enabled extra sightseeing opportunities. It was sure nice to just sit back and enjoy the scenery on the motorcoach while someone else did the driving, though.
RESTAURANTS – Every restaurant experience was enjoyable, unique, and provided a front row seat to the prettiest views. We enjoyed our meals but had to plan ahead to fit the options together best.
Not all restaurants were open. In February, Fairview was closed except for afternoon tea and Alpine Social was closed except for weekends. The outdoor ice bar (a fun place to get a hot chocolate!) was only open limited hours on weekends too.
The winter menus were also very limited. Most restaurants only had a choice between two or three entrees, and usually just one entrée appealed to us so we did not want to go back to the same restaurant for another dinner. Special (and expensive) multi-course menus replaced the normal menus around Valentines Day, but you only had a choice of entrée and were stuck with another course that might not be your preference. Guides Pantry only offered cold sandwiches, no pizza or hot options, and as usual was crowded with day visitors.
ACCESSIBILITY – A ski injury on the trip gave me a new perspective on accessibility issues, so sharing info for those who have trouble getting around. Naturally, this is a huge resort hotel and a considerable distance from room to restaurant and shopping, etc. In the winter with room renovations underway, if you couldn’t take stairs you had to take two different sets of elevators to get from room to lobby to breakfast restaurant, and then navigate through a keyed door. It was a struggle with a wheelchair, yet tiring with crutches because of the distance.
The hot tub/steam room/pool are located down two flights of stairs. I inquired whether there was another way to get down there, and the front desk sent a member of the housekeeping staff to meet me who helped me hobble down the stairs with crutches. I was told the only other way was outside, which was impractical in the winter. Surprising there’s not an option for better accessibility. Coming up the stairs after using the pool area was really hard.
The Fairmont rooms are also very small, especially the bathrooms. I’ve stayed in deluxe, gold floor, and suites in the past and recommend those instead of Fairmont rooms for those who need a little extra space for accessibility issues.
There are plenty of things to do at the Chateau even if you can’t do all the outdoor activities. Activities and pretty sitting areas make it a most delightful location. There was even a nice area to sit outside with a view of the lake that was reserved for hotel guests. In a way, I’m glad I had some leisure time to just enjoy the property instead of being on the go the whole time.

Victim of its success, the hotel is always crowded. But it’s the best location to capture sunset and sunrise on Lake Louise. The indoor pool opened as from 6am was greatly appreciated, after a delicious diner at Louiza and before heading for the copious buffet breakfast. My room with view on parking was small but quiet.

The natural views and atmosphere are wonderful. Inside the Fairmont itself, it is a zoo with people milling around everywhere. We went to the High Tea at the Fairview Bar and Restaurant. The High Tea was very disappointing, no table cloths, cheap white plates, poor value, poor food. The Empress high tea in Victoria kills it compared to this. I would save your money as we paid over $250 for high tea and a glass of basic prosecco for two. It worked out to about $7 Canadian for each finger sandwich or tiny cookie on the tower. We didn't even finish the food as it was not good.

Stayed at the Fairmont in their 2BR Suite, lake-facing.
The sunrise from the room was just out of this world- I will forever remember the view . Excellent service as well. Went canoing as well, rented a canoe from the Fairmont Boat House

All the major car rental companies are available at Calgary Airport. While weather is unreliable, the road between Calgary and Lake Louise is excellent.

Most days it's very safe. A great website is the Alberta Motor Association - go to road reports and up to date road conditions are displayed. There are days when weather is bad but this a good resource to follow. Enjoy Alberta and all the beauty we have to offer!

I'm staying at the Chateau after travelling on the Rocky Mountaineer, 1 night only. It appears we get in around 7-8pm so wont be able to do much that night - sightseeing wise - but the next day I'm booked in Banff so have most of the day to explore Lake Louise area. (Hoping the hotel will keep my luggage til I'm ready to go.) what are the must sees, can I wander around alone or should I book some kind of tour. some one mentioned mirror lake - is it a relatively easy hike. i'm a little fit but wont have hiking boots, only walking shoes so dont want to mountain climb. this is towards the end of September. oh, and any suggestions how I get from LL to Banff. TIA all.

Yes!Mirror Lake is easy hike approximately 2.6 Km from lake Louise .
If you are in Lake Louise area might as well visit Mirror Lake and on top there is a tea house Lake Agnes Tea house.Its worth the hike with amazing view .What an epic hike.Ebjoy
