Though you definitely need ice cleats! We did the long route (4KM around) and on the way down toward the stairs, the trail became even a bit too icy for those wearing ice cleats, so we went back out the way we came. Though the views and experience were fabulous.

A nice trail to do for eventually overlooking the Athabasca River and seeing over the town of Jasper. Lots of uphill hiking in the beginning.

I hiked Old Fort Point in the afternoon of July 25, 2021. I prefer to hike this trail in a clockwise direction for a more gradual climb and ending with the views (otherwise, it’s a very steep incline if you start with the stairs and do the viewpoint first).

The trail starts off along a flat and easy path through a peaceful forest. I spotted a beautiful male elk at the trailhead as well, which was amazing! There is a sign warning of bears in the area and I did see a large pile of scat which was fairly fresh but no bear sightings. The trail then climbs a steep hill and opens up to some beautiful views of the surrounding mountains as you round the back of the loop. It continues through forest but with a more gradual climb and lovely views. There is a side trail leading to the right up a small hill where you will find the iconic red chairs! There were great views from up there of the mountains! The trail continues to gradually climb until you reach the large rock at the Old Fort Point viewpoint. From the top, you can see all of the Jasper townsite, Athabasca River, and mountains. So beautiful!

The trail follows left around the side of the rock and descends steeply through an open and rocky area, until it reaches a wooden staircase which leads back down to the parking area. This was a beautiful little hike right in Jasper that is easily accessible and a great add-on after a big hike or a warm-up before doing a more challenging hike. Very scenic views for a moderate effort. This hike took me 1 hour and 30 minutes.

A two lane road past some hidden resorts over an iron bridge to the terminus of the Jasper Raft Ride on the Athabasca River and onto a lovely view of Lake Beauvert across to Jasper Park Lodge. A hiking trail begins at the tiny parking lots. Many people parking beside the road and enjoying the view, sitting on the rocks beside the very clear water. Many canoes, kayaks and dragon boats on the lake. No picnic tables or benches. It is a lovely place to stop.

We took the left hand part of the loop first which with so much snow was beautiful. The challenging bit came towards the end - above the lookout - when it was slippy around the edge of the mountain. Still, the views at the view point were tremendous and the feeling of achievement, so good !

The Old Fort point trail is a pleasant hike from town and around 2 hours in total, if you don't stop for breaks, and a nice view of the valley from the lookout. We came across a herd of big horned sheep just over the Athabasca bridge and were transfixed watching the males butt heads against each other. You can also divert your walk towards the Fairmont Jasper Lodge, as we did. From here you can get a shuttle back into town, but note the times as we just missed the 3:25 bus and would have needed to wait until 6pm for the next one. We decided just to walk the 50 min back into town.

We took this trail at the end of September. The views back over Jasper were lovely. It is a rather easy walk and great to do if you have the time. We did this walk the same day as we did Maligne Canyon.

We hiked this in Oct so weather was still good, can imagine hard in winter, it's a good walk over an hour can walk deep into wood area, which we did and saw a black bear run across trail ahead of us, it's a great view from top all round and you can see town as well, well worth it .

We hiked the steep stairs first to get the toughest portion out of the way. You can see the gorgeous views of Jasper within the first 10 mins. We then continue to finish the loop which took us through some very beautiful landscape. The trail was very well maintained and is suitable for all ages. Highly recommend this trail if you have an hour or two to spare.

This hike takes you through the forest. I took the clockwise route so that I would be going down hill, and would recommend that. It is very steep at the end (or beginning) The payoff is a little side trail that takes you to the summit where you have a fantastic 360 degree view of the whole area. Some chairs are even provided to rest after the climb. Awesome.
