Amazing, beautiful and powerful all at the same time, don’t forget to look for fossil shells in the rocks. Can be slippery but most ages can walk the paths, just don’t wear loose or shoes with no grip

Very crowded and steep canyon. The views are spectacular and worth seeing. We got there at 9 am and it was busy! Lots of single file lines and groups crowding the lookouts. I have knee issues and to the firth bridge and back was a lot of stairs and slippery rocks to walk on. I’m glad I did it though.

From the upper parking lot at bridges 1 and 2 it is partly steep with stairs down the canyon. Imposing the power with which the water cleared its way. The people spread over the route, so you have quiet moments to yourself despite relatively many tourists.

This is a great little walk that can be as easy or long as you wish. We walked Bridge 1 to Bridge 4 but in all reality stopping at Bridge 3 would be fine. In my opinion Bridge 3 was the most impressive with the volume of water going down the gorge at that point amazing. It was raining when we were there so not too many people on the track and we got a parking spot easy. Wear proper walking shoes. Look out along the roadways for wildlife. We saw a moose!

We walked Maligne Canyon at the end of March, early Spring. As the snow and ice was melting, the tours up the canyon floor stopped about a week before we got there. Starting/ parking at 5th Bridge (as recommended by many) worked really well and we were still about to walk some of the first part of the canyon on the canyon floor. Allow around 2.5h round trip and if there’s ice, definitely wear spikes.

Great views of canyon and falls. The 1&2 bridges were easy to get to for most everyone. Others struggled a lot at bridge 3 because it’s so step up and down. Tip: drive to bridges 5 & 6 to parking lots and get out to see canyon from there. You can easily walk to bridge 4 from 5. That’s what we did.

Easy parking with well signposted routes from bridges 1 and 2 leading down the steps and paths to bridges 3 and 4. Impressive slot canyons with great depth and fast flowing water. Round trip to bridge 4 back to upper car park/ restaurant took us 1 hour 20 minutes complete with stops for photos. For us it was a must do in the area. Given more time we would have included bridges 5 and 6.

Is Maligne Canyon trail impacted by Jasper forest fires.
Skrevet 23. juli 2024
I am using a walker and am wondering if there is a nice viewpoint close to the parking lot, just so I can get an idea of the beauty of the canyon. Or might I be better off to forego this particular area?
Skrevet 16. desember 2022
There is a viewpoint at the top of the canyon, very near the welcome house, which is mostly flat to get to, other than a few stairs. If you are steady with your walker and in reasonably good health, the path is smooth and paved and it would give you a good idea of the depth and drama of the canyon if you walked the short distance to the first lookout bridge. You'll see clearly where to walk from when you get to the parking lot. It's worth a stop, especially as it's close to Jasper townsite and right on the magnificent drive to Maligne Lake.

The trail has steps built into it in some places. There are hand rails in some of the trickier spots.

How far of a hike is it to the forth bridge?
Skrevet 7. september 2021
From the trail head for the first bridge to the fourth bridge takes about an hour each way (allowing time to ooh and aahh at each bridge). Do go beyond the fourth bridge about 5 minutes for another great view before returning. This is a good trail to do in the rain as it is not muddy and there is hardly anyone around in the rain.

Hi. We are planning to spend about 8 days in Alberta the week after Labor Day, flying into Edmonton and driving to Jasper the same day. Will be spending time Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff and leave from Calgary. Wondering if this hike can be done the first part of the day we drive to Lake Louise (which I understand is about a 3 hour drive)? We can arrive at the trail in the morning. Does this sound like a reasonable 1/2 - 2/3 day to include in our itinerary?
Any information on this hike or any suggestions regarding our travel plans would be greatly appreciated. Thanks fellow TripAdvisors!

The Gyspy app we used for Jasper and Banff National Parks is the Canadian Rockies which includes 3 areas for about US $20. That combines all the national parks into one. You will be so impressed by this app. and what it will guide you to. Enjoy your adventure and take your time as you travel this road way to take in as much of this scenery as possible on the Icefield Parkway. It is spectacular!!!

Did you do this 5 bridges hike on your own, or through a tour company? If a company, which one and how long of a tour was it. If on your own, how did you get there are back to town? (we won't have a car) Thank you.
Skrevet 18. juni 2018
On our own. Just follow the signs to Maligne Canyon. No need to go with a group it’s a very easy walk.

Is this a good place to take my in laws in the summer? They are in their early 70s/late 60s so I’d like something short and easy for them to walk
Skrevet 27. mai 2018
I do not think that they are able to do the entire trail, but the paths are good and there are rails all over the place. With a short walk you can see a lot!
Best regards
Rob

Is there an easy way of getting there without a car or going on a tour?
Skrevet 23. mai 2018
I’m pretty sure you can hire bicycles in Jasper if your up for that ...

Hi... I have one day in Jasper in May, and one day only. I am trying to decide which trail to do / sight to see and am between Lac Beauvert and Maligne Canyon as they both look stunning.
I will have just come from a day in Lake Louise, had a day on the icefields parkaway and Athabasaca Falls, followed by two days on the Rocky Mountaineer train after Jasper... so want to make the most of my day there.
Any suggestions between these - or anything else?!

Hi Sarah,
So glad you are taking a trip to Jasper and the Canadian Rockies! You will surely have a wonderful time. The entire region is my all time favorite area for scenic photography in all of North America. As far as your choices of places to see while in Jasper, there are so many choices and it depends on the weather as well as what you like to do. Lake Beauvert is in the middle of several cabins and other accommodations and near the town of Jasper itself. From there you can get some nice vistas of the surrounding mountains. It should not take too long to visit there, so you could spend some time there and do some other things. If the weather is cloudy and/or a bit rainy, Maligne Canyon would be a good choice as I think the best lighting there for good photography of the water is nice and even lighting when it is cloudy.
If the weather is nice and clear, I highly suggest taking the Jasper Skytram up to the top for some spectacular views of the area. You can also hike some trails there on top if you like. Also, as you drive into Jasper along the Icefields Parkway, there are several places to stop there for some great views of the area. Finally, if you have time, Highway 16 (Yellowhead Highway) heading east from Jasper to the park's east entrance has several places to stop at for some incredible vistas and some great reflections in the rivers and lakes of the surrounding mountains. Best times of the day for this area is in the early mornings and late afternoons/early evenings. You also might see some elk, mountain sheep, deer and other animals along this route at those times.
Feel free to ask any other questions. Although I do not live there, I absolutely love the area and have visited many times over the years.
