Absolutely beautiful work by Bill Reid. I am embarrassed to admit that I'd never heard of him but am now a big fan.

This gallery is easy to miss as it is off a small plaza above street level. To have missed it would have been a great shame. As well as the man himself, there are quality exhibits from other north West Canada First Nation artists. The gift shop has a wide range of quality items for sale, most of which are made by First Nation artists.

Excellent Gallery and Gift Shop. I thoroughly enjoyed the exhibit of First Nation designer and artist, Sho Sho Esquiro. Her designs are powerful and must be seen in person! The Bill Reid Foundation pieces are excellent as well.

I felt inspired to re-visit the Bill Reid Gallery, for the first time in nearly a decade, after touring Gwaii Haanas this past summer. As part of that tour, we visited the ancient Haida village site of T’aanuu, Reid’s ancestral home. Learning about the village site – and Reid’s strong connection to it – was a powerful experience. Visiting Reid’s gallery, I thought, would be a good way to connect the past to the present.

Established in 2008 to celebrate the works of Bill Reid, the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art is a hidden gem of sorts located on Hornby Street. The gallery itself is somewhat small, but is anchored by the Bill Reid SFU Art Collection, which features works in various mediums including gold, silver, bronze, abalone, fossil and other such materials. Experience Reid’s work and you’ll see how and why he’s become synonymous with “Haida art” and, indeed, Northwest Coast Indigenous art generally.

Besides featuring Reid, the gallery also showcases rotating non-permanent exhibits from up-and-coming Indigenous artists. When I’d previously patronized the Bill Reid Gallery in 2012, “Carrying on ‘Irregardless’” was showing and this exhibit really stuck with me. I think it must’ve been the image of “Campbell’s Clam Chowder Soup” ;) In seriousness, I loved the use of subversive humour to challenge and question settler stereotypes. In forcing us to examine ourselves through a humorous lens, a new space is opened up – one that encourages healing and unification. Fast-forward 9 years: A solo exhibit by Sho Sho Esquiro is on. This exhibit takes a much more serious tone and approach, but such is apt given the discoveries made at Canadian Residential Schools earlier this year. Will we talk about the colonial practices of the past and, more importantly, will we move in a progressive direction towards actual reconciliation?

What I appreciate about this gallery is its very real attempt to build bridges betwixt and between people. In creating an awareness of Aboriginal issues – through art and culture – we’re provided a portal in which to move forward in a good way. Indeed, Yaahl Sgwansung (Reid) still has much to teach us if we have but the eyes to see and ears to listen.

This gallery is small compared to others however it is worth a visit to understand the history of Bill Reid and his journey of (re)discovering his heritage. His works are beautiful and relevant. In later years he shared his skills with younger artists and encouraged them to pursue their craft. What I like about his story is his discovery of his art and skills and the willingness to promote his art and heritage to others using his strong voice and his connections through his other art, broadcasting, becoming a voice for Indigenous peoples, art and heritage.
Due to Covid restrictions, we were able to book our tickets online and there were very few people in the gallery which afforded us to take our time, backtrack when needed and revisit exhibits. The staff were wonderful and knowledgeable, the facility is people friendly, clean and well organized. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would encourage other visitors to spend some time here. If you are looking for information on Indigenous Art, history there is no better example then this exhibit
Bonus, there is parking available at the facility (which we didn't realize at the time) and is reasonably priced. The gift shop is well stocked and price ranges for anyone looking for a piece of history to take home. Thank you.

Beautiful works in many different forms, gold jewelry, wood carvings, stone, paintings. Also had drummers and singers perform in studio while assisting guests to make dream catchers.

You will leave this gallery with a new level of appreciation for Bill Reid's artistry and Northwest Coast Indian Art in general. The design of the gallery is excellent and both the permanent and temporary exhibits are well presented. A place of the heart.
