I was walking west from the totem pole/yacht club area of Stanley Park which was crowded with cyclists, walkers, and photographers, when all of a sudden I was at peace - I had crossed the causeway and was at Lost Lagoon!
Others have commented on this, I see; so it is not just me that realizes when one needs a bit of tranquility after the hustle bustle of the great photo-op locations; come here.

This is our third visit to Vancouver. For some reason this time I appreciated how densely populated the downtown area is. Lots and lots and lots of tightly packed high-rise apartments. With all of the development, Vancouver has done a wonderful job with Stanley Park and a host of urban hiking trails. The Lost Lagoon is one.
While waiting for a harbor cruise, we took a hike on the trail. In only a few moments we went from an urban to a 'wilderness' area. The trail is great. Well maintained. And foliage on both sides. We were truly away from the city. We thoroughly enjoyed our hike.
Oh, and there were a number of very small ducklings. Pretty neat.

I went on British Columbia Day and thought it would be very busy. In the late morning/early afternoon there were walkers, joggers, and bicyclists (I believe they have to walk bikes on the trail compared to the Seawall) I enjoyed seeing the heron, ducklings and the mama duck, a baby raccoon, and plenty of geese. It was definitely more quiet than the Seawall and slower paced compared to the busy Seawall on holiday.
I wish Nature House would be opened. It has a beautiful mural on the outside of it!

I just finished an hour walk around the east side of Stanley Park. It was like rush hour: walkers, runners, cyclists, cars, horse-drawn contraptions. Cross the causeway, and suddenly silence. Here, we have trails, water, trees, just like Stanley Park. So, if you would like a little peace and quiet with your walk, maybe try here.

This is a man-made 40-acre body of water; it used to be part of Coal Harbor but, in 1916, the Stanley Park Causeway put an end to that. It used to flow out, with the tide, and the construction of the causeway now blocks that flow.
Tide goes out, water levels drop, thus "lost." When Pauline Johnson (poet and writer) wrote her poem by the same name, the tides did, in fact, empty the lagoon and turn them into mud flats. She passed away in 1913 (three years before the construction project) so what was "then" is not "now" (i.e. things change).
There used to be a fountain that sprayed water up into the air but it has been closed for quite awhile now. A piping project is in progress and, until it is done, no fountain.
We followed the path along the lagoon on our way up the coastline to see Second and Third Beaches and enjoy being in the moment. It is peaceful and tranquil, offering a nice respite from the vitality of the West End.

When we first come upon Lost Lagoon we may wonder what’s so “lost” about it. After all, it’s right there – in plain sight – for all to see. Stanley Park’s largest body of water is hardly something we could miss, so how did it get its name? Well, to answer that pressing question, dear readers, we have to delve into the history books and learn a little about the park’s development. In doing so, we will enrich our understanding of Stanley Park and also clarify its connections to the poet, E. Pauline Johnson (see my earlier review of the Pauline Johnson monument on this site).
Interestingly, what was to become “Lost Lagoon” was created 104 years ago by the development and construction of the Stanley Park Causeway. Prior to that point in time, the future Lost Lagoon was actually part of Coal Harbour. When the tide rose, the lake (as it was then) would fill with water. As the tide began to recede, the mudflats would be exposed and the lagoon “lost.” E. Pauline Johnson considered this area of Vancouver a favourite and named it “Lost Lagoon” in a poem of the same name precisely because it would come and go with the ebb and flow of the tide. Ironically, this body of water was officially named “Lost Lagoon” in 1922 long after it had become a landlocked pond.
While the name “Lost Lagoon” may not really fit today, there’s no denying that this area of Stanley Park is a nature lover’s delight. With its scenic views, impressive Jubilee Fountain, robust birdlife and lovely hiking trails, the Lost Lagoon helps to provide us with a brief reprieve from the hustle and bustle of contemporary life. Even on a grey Fall morning the beauty of this place is not lost. Come here, walk the trails, sit on a bench and watch the majestic herons. It’s great mental therapy, especially in our COVID times.

Cette partie du parc Stanley est un eu en retrait et est plus tranquille, sans la foule qui fait partie du paysage du parc. C'est agréable pour quelques minutes de repos.

Walking around Lost Lagoon certainly doesn't feel like you are in the middle of Vancouver. Only the of the tall buildings on the west side tell otherwise. It is a very peaceful walk along the path bordering the lagoon. I'm glad that we were able to visit here twice during our trip to Vancouver.

Whenever I walk the trail around this lagoon, and stop to rest and admire the water, I wonder I virtually have the place to myself. Where is everybody? Why are they ignoring this beautiful peaceful spot so close to the West End? After years of asking this question, I have concluded they must all be in Stanley Park. So, if you want peace and quiet without venturing too far from the West End or your downtown hotel, give Lost Lagoon a try. Trail about 2km, lots of benches to sit and rest and dream and....
