Such a cool place in Vancouver and a must visit for families! My family loved FlyOver Canada (it reminded us of the Soarin’ ride at Disney World). Beautiful building centrally located on the waterfront with views of the mountains.

Take a stroll on the decks of Canada Place. Built to look like a sailing ship it's a stunning view from any direction. Perfectly situated to take in large cruise ships during the cruising seasons and transit to take you to North Vancouver and to the Suburbs.

We arrived early for our show and entertained ourselves with a walking tour all around Canada Place. We enjoyed spring sunshine and the spectacular views of Coal Harbour and the North Shore mountains. The restaurant selection was good and easily accessable, too.

Hello this Area is worth checking out if you are a Local or a Visitor to Vancouver. This is a beautiful Building that has various attractions including an IMAX Theatre. The only time I'm usually at Waterfront is when I'm switching Lines on The SkyTrain to get to The Airport at YVR.Still this Area is very popular Year Round especially in The Late Spring & Summer.Again it's I think on arrives must see list of they're spending some time in Greater Vancouver.👌

While in Vancouver one will inevitably see Canada Place, with its signature white sails, while strolling downtown and enjoying the waterfront. Whenever I’m the city, I see this building nearly every time; however, I’ve been reluctant to write a review because to simply see it on the outside is a mere surface reading – “it looks nice” – when it is so much more than a familiar landmark. On a recent visit, however, I finally had an opportunity to patronize Canada Place, in a substantive way, for the first time since meeting with outgoing Premier Campbell at the WTC in 2011.

After experiencing FlyOver Canada’s Christmas themed event (which I’ll probably do a short review of later), my partner spied some advertising for “Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition.” Being completely ignorant of this event up to this point, we made the decision to check it out following our visit to the annual Vancouver Christmas Market (see my earlier review on this site). Spur of the moment things can be a lot of fun, and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel was no exception, but more on that in a moment.

As noted above, when most talk about Canada Place, the focus tends to be on the building’s exterior and its location relative to other things: The views of Coal Harbour and the North Shore mountains; its proximity to the Vancouver Convention Centre (West); the start of Vancouver’s iconic Seawall and the walk to Stanley Park; its closeness to Vancouver’s version of Rodeo Drive (Robson Street), it’s shops and plethora of eateries; it’s functional purpose as Canada’s largest cruise ship terminal (deathly quiet since COVID); and the easy access it affords to public transit like SkyTrain and TransLink. I think all of that is good and relevant, but it also gives the impression that Canada Place is more of a passing attraction. You know – something you look at and then move on to bigger and better things. To some extent that’s true, but Canada Place also plays host to important events, be they conferences, exhibitions or community-based celebrations.

From a historic perspective, this “world class landmark” has played an important cultural role in Vancouver’s development since, well, before it even came to be: Sixty years before “Canada Place” existed, this space was home to the Canadian Pacific Railway’s Pier B-C. This “Pier” served CP’s iconic “Empress” ships and cargo fleet, helping to build the Canadian economy. Later, as travel by ship began to wane, and Canada Place was subsequently built, it functioned as the “Canadian Pavilion” during Expo ’86, which ushered in a sea of change for the city (see, especially, False Creek and SkyTrain).

In the current day, Canada Place is still very much a hub for the city. Besides playing host to the already mentioned bigwig conventions, it is home to the Pan Pacific Hotel (1986), World Trade Centre, FlyOver Canada (2012), and the popular Canada Trail (2012). The latter attraction, much touted by Canada Place, was installed along the west promenade and allows visitors to “walk across Canada” and observe some community names written in tile and lovely coloured glass. Personally, I never really understood the hype around the “Canada Trail.” It’s cool to see – as you walk towards FlyOver Canada – but it’s the view at the end of the promenade that’s the real attraction, in my opinion. Well, that and FlyOver Canada if you check it out. Now, I’d be remiss if I failed to mention that, during our visit this past December, our walk along the “trail” – towards FlyOver – was punctuated by the classic Woodward’s Window Christmas displays. Talk about a step back in time and major nostalgia!

Okay, back to the Michelangelo exhibit: As noted above, this was very much a spur of the moment purchase. We arrived at our designated time (5:30PM), displayed our proof of vaccination and were promptly directed to East Exhibit Hall A. Once here, we watched a humorous, but well put together 20-minute film on Michelangelo and his journey to the Sistine Chapel. Most introductory films of this type are a total bore, but the one accompanying this exhibit was both informative and engaging. Afterwards, we walked into the main hall to observe 34 frescoes up close and in detail. Learning the context behind the “Sistine Chapel ceiling” and what Michelangelo did to complete it in just 4 years, really makes you appreciate the intricate detail found in each and every fresco. I’m not sure if we’ll ever visit the real thing, so this exhibit was a superb impromptu treat. Best of all, it was very COVID-friendly thanks to the low numbers in the hall at any time.

As an attraction, Canada Place is much more than a transient stop or photo-op. If you’re planning to visit one of Vancouver’s most iconic buildings, or passing by, check to see if there are any events scheduled or in progress. You might be pleasantly surprised – as we were with Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel exhibit.

Went to see the Woodward’s Christmas window displays at Canada Place, absolutely beautiful. This is a free outdoor event and well worth the trip into Vancouver.

Crossing the harbour in the dark with the rainbow spotlights was pure magic. And the sails are amazing in daylight too.
