Not having visited Vancouver before I thought I would check out the museum of Vancouver to understand its history.
It was a bit hit and miss, quite a bit to see but also some omissions in my view.

I learned quite a bit about the abuses suffered by the First Nation people and how the museum is acknowledging the past role of the museum in harvesting artefacts from their sacred sites etc

The displays are arranged in a sequence that has you wandering backwards and forwards trying to ascertain if you have skipped time periods but I managed to make sense of what was there I think.

Being new to Vancouver I was a bit confused as to the geography of the city and its development over time and the displays didn’t always have context unless you were familiar with where the various named places were.

Nonetheless there were lots of interesting things to see and I was inspired to find out more from my own research.
You could spend a couple of hours there.

This was a nice museum with interesting displays. Their exhibit with the Musqueam people was really well done. Its a good way to start a visit to Vancouver.

Believe it or not, but this past February marked my first ever visit to the Museum of Vancouver. Even from a personal standpoint I find that shocking given I’m in the city practically every month and lived here for a time in the early 2000s. I’ve walked by the museum on a number of occasions – as I’ve cut through Vanier Park – but never stopped by to check it out . . . until earlier this year. Indeed, the landmark architecture of the “Centennial Museum,” as it was called between 1967 and 1981, beckons and calls . . . but is it a spaceship or an Indigenous cedar-weaved hat?

The building that houses the Museum of Vancouver (and HR MacMillan Space Centre) is an iconic symbol of the city, on par with the Harbour Centre, Science World and Marine Building. Constructed in 1967 by Gerald Hamilton, the edifice is a fine example of “new formalism,” which was very much in vogue at the time. I think the overall “style” of the building is fitting for the museum and Space Centre – its mix of classical elements and smooth surfaces hearken back to Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Factor in George Norris’ iconic “The Crab” sculpture at the building’s forefront – functioning as the “guardian” of everything inside – and you begin to see how and why this space is such an icon of Vancouver.

While I’ll agree with a number of earlier reviews that note the museum is a little on the small side, there’s no denying it is jam-packed with information via useful write-ups, unique artifacts and interactive displays; thus, I’d suggest the Museum of Vancouver punches well above its weight. I found all of the displays, which are segregated into general time periods, quite informative but will readily admit that some were better than others – at least in my humble opinion. For example, I appreciated the opening exhibit – The City Before the City – because it paints a vivid and powerful picture of the pre-colonial era when the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations had their own “city” in the region. Likewise, I also enjoyed “Boom, Bust, War” (1930s-40s) because, while touching on a period of economic recovery via war, the hard truths of racism via Canada’s treatment of the Japanese during World War 2 isn’t shied away from. Lastly, the period from the 1960s-70s – “Revolution” – was fun to unpack and unravel. Flower Power and Hippie Culture were significant social forces at the time and they, in many ways, laid the foundation for other cultural movements, namely LGBTQIA+ rights. And yes, I loved the neon light displays – they highlighted a time of optimism and growth but were dying out by the early 1980s.

One area where I felt the museum was lacking is with respect to contemporary history, i.e.: the 21st century. The displays basically come to an end at the mid-1980s and Vancouver has morphed and changed much in the last 40 years. It is now very much a “City of Glass,” for example, where the condo is king. And reconciliation with First Nations have also advanced well beyond what is covered in existing displays.

Shortcomings aside, the Museum of Vancouver is still worth a visit because not only does it contextualize the city, but it also shows us how we can shape it going forward. In observing and reviewing the stories and experiences of the past, we become more whole and better able to improve ourselves and our surroundings. That, to me, is the perfect reason to visit the MOV.

We were disappointed - we were advised when we arrived that much of the museum was under construction and our entrance fee was reduced but there seemed to be a modern exhibit of indigenous art (really interesting) and only one room on indigenous history and a Vancouver through the ages (interesting) but the uses of wood was too modern and we had to go around twice to check we had seen everything available. We couldn't access the garden and downstairs seemed to access the toilets only. The space museum is in the same building (and it did not have a gift shop) so maybe both could have been combined while they are restructuring. Pricy for little to see,

It was an interesting museum. It could do with some more investment but it was a good day for a brief visit. I was really interested and pleased to see the reconcilliation work going on with the indiginous population.

....which the Museum of Vancouver and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre "homed" in a building complex.

The MOV is the largest municipal museum in the country, hosting permanent and traveling exhibitions on the history of the city, Native American and Pacific cultural achievements, and exhibitions on contemporary history.

Adult admission currently 22 CAD

Opens with displays about First Nations. The extensive texts written in indigenous language will be helpful to the dozen or so people who can read it. Rest of the museum is mostly predictable and static displays about how Vancouver was impacted by timber, world wars, Great Depression, hippies. Not much past the 1970s, except a quick reference to gay rights. NOTHING on the coming of the Canadian Pacific Railway, Granville Island, Expo 86 (though Montreal’s Expo 67 gets a mention), immigration from Hong Kong, 2010 Olympics. Ticket agents seem unaware of and not very interested in the museum.

We can go through the years and a little exhibition and find out about the history of Vancouver - it’s a small museum, but it has some nice exposures

This place is amazing…really celebrates Canada’s past and present. I really enjoyed the exhibits with the early street and scenes from the past with all the memorabilia.

I found the Vancouver Museum puzzling and confusing in its lack of anything that resembles a museum that belongs to a city of 2.4 million. We visited Vancouver in the middle of winter as a stop-over on a skiing holiday, for 3 nights. We arrived just as they were having some of the coldest days of the year. Hence we had to look for something to do inside. Having two children aged 10 and 12 we thought going to the Museum of Vancouver would be a safe bet and we could learn more about the city. We are falling in love with Canada so it pains me to write a negative review but I remain more puzzled than disappointed. This museum has a very disappointing entrance way with a dis-interested staff member. There is no cafe or shop, so don't go there expecting to have lunch or coffee (as we almost did!) The view over to the city was lovely from the windows. It did have an interesting exhibit about refugees in the city which was thought-provoking and did have some history about where the city has come from but then had an exhibit about the ages which seemed a little irrelevant but fun non-the less. I see there is a Museum of Anthropology and a Science Museum (both of which we didn't go to), so maybe they are supposed to fill in the gaps for the city. There is obviously a history here regarding Vancouver's museum's that I am not party to, but, as a visitor the title of 'Museum of Vancouver', I feel, is misleading, as it suggests a lot more than it delivers, or the funding for this poor institution has been largely withdrawn by the city!
Later, on the way home, we visited the Auckland Museum, a city of 1.4 million, and it far outstripped the Vancouver Museum. I was also comparing it to Te Papa in Wellington and even our own Museum in Christchurch (currently closed due to renovation, but even in its original state outstripped the Vancouver Museum). All of these three museums are full of people, are buzzing and are obviously cared for by their respective cities, where I feel this poor museum is not!
