This museum was formerly the Coroner's Court, a City Morgue, and a Forensic Analyst Lab. It explores the grislier history of Vancouver and specializes in the history of forensic sciences and policing. Lots of interesting exhibits which wont appeal to children.
The admission price was very reasonable.

This was a cool little discovery as we were looking for something to do on a rainy day. Great little museum with an oddball collection of artifacts, case files, correspondence, photos, etc. We spent about an hour here, but probabaly could have spent a bit longer - 2 hrs would be a good amt of time to allot if you want to see everything and read the stories posted, etc.
The museum may not hold the interest of young children, as many of the exhibits require some reading and/or would just not interest young children, and there are confiscated weapons on display, some that may prompt conversations you are not ready to answer about the ugly horrors that humans are capable of inflicting on one another (such as the baseball bat embedded with hundreds of nails, or the axe with hair still visible on the blade that was used by a teenager to murder his family). For the queasy, they do a nice job at the front of explaining how to avoid the body part specimens, etc.

I'm never sure what to expect from police museums. I find they usually lack nuance and just lean into violent murder related content. Given the current conversations about policing, and how police forces have impacted so many communities, I always leave those museums feeling like they dropped the ball and that they could do so much more. And this museum was a typical police museum in many ways. But someone really creative and thoughtful took a small budget and put together a beautiful exhibit on John Vance. I was at a few museums that day but the Vance exhibit was the best one by far. The forensic content of the other exhibits complemented the history of the actual space and I learned a lot about the science of early policing.
The staff should probably put up a clear warning sign for the back room. The cheerful person at the front desk told visitors not to take photos of the "biological specimens" there, but from that casual description I walked in expecting maybe hair or something, not fetuses. They were displayed in an educational and historical way but definitely something people need to be aware of before they encounter them.

There are interesting exhibits at this small museum, but it’s very much “old style”+ lots of reading of small print on wall displays. Very much a conundrum for the group that runs the museum; it resides in a building that is historic to the museum’s purpose, but being located in a somewhat unattractive area of Vancouver there will always be challenges in attracting visitors . If you can’t attract more visitors it’s tough to justify and or finance significant improvements.
There is some evidence of using technology to enhance the visitor experience; in particular the existence of QR codes for smartphone users to access additional resources. The next step could be using smartphone technology to create a recorded guided tour of the museum., since for me guided tours of historic sites and museums are one of the best ways to enhance my experience at an attraction.

This was one of the most interesting museums I've ever visited. I read pretty much every display and we stayed for about an hour and a half.
I would advise that you plan your route in advance as the surrounding area feels potentially dangerous. I wish I had known this in advance.

Loved this fascinating museum just off the beaten track. It’s a a ten minute walk from the sea bus terminal through gastown. We found lots of interesting exhibits about the history of the city and its criminal past. Staff were lovely and helpful, absolutely worth a visit.

An unexpected gem. This is really a very interesting museum not only about the history of the Vancouver police department but about policing. Great exhibits. Really well done.

Interesting museum covering Vancouver police history. Great content related to Vancouver riots and how the police have evolved as the city has evolved. The morgue portion of the tour had various stories of historic cases and unique artifacts to view. Weapons room was small however, packed full of tradition and odd artifacts collected over time.

Vancouver Police museum is based just in the walking dead area of Vancouver, you even pass a drop in centre to fetch to it from gastown, but don't let that stop you. The museum is jammed full of items to show how the VPD has changed over the last 125 years, fascinating true life stories, gory items in the autopsy, including a story about Errol Flynn (ask anyone over the age of 55)

This was a very interesting experience with exhibits ranging from firearms, police helmets, and stories of local crimes and investigations through the last couple of hundred years set in the building which also enabled you to see the Coroner Court, the morgue and adjoining rooms. We spent more than an hour reading the cuttings and exploring the exhibits. It cost only $10 for seniors and was very good value

To the best of my recollection the cost of admission is as follows:
adults $12.00
seniors & students $10.00
youth (child) $ 8.00
The prices if not correct are very close to being correct. The Vancouver Police Museum is a very economical exhibit and a nice and educational way to pass a wet and rainy day.

Is this museum a place to take primary school aged children , or better to wait till middle school or high school?
Skrevet 9. februar 2018
There is a morgue and slices of bodies on display. It’s more for adults in that there are a lot of articles to read of old cases. We had a talk from a guide there about women on the force. It’s not something younger ones would sit still for or be interested in. It’s not a very large museum. Just one floor in an old building in a bad part of town. Safe but if they’ve never been there they would need to be told about it first.

Hi. I had an assignment about Vancouver police museum. The question is what is the best year to visit? Hope i got a feedback from you guys. God bless

Hi Glydel,
Thank you for your question.
As Claudia mentioned, any time of the year would be good. Some people prefer visiting winter time since you can stay dry inside of the museum, and it is quieter during winter (March - September would be the tourism peak season). We have Sins of the City Walking Tour from April - early October, which would be recommended if you are interested in the local history as well.
Hope I answered your question. If you have further questions, feel free to contact us anytime.
Thanks,
VPM
