Pushing 70 and looking forward to a facelift
aug. 2021
There has been a bridge "presence" here since 1889 and the current iteration (the 3rd) dates to 1954. I will give this some serious thought next time I walk across the bridge. That's some pretty old steel! There will be a change to the bridge to include improvements to the pedestrian access concerns.

Having walked it in the past, only the fleet-of-foot with speed-of-light timing can run across the lanes of traffic to the pedestrian paths. It'll put the fear of the devil into any reasonable person; it gives true meaning to the term "the quick and the dead". I'll take the ferries in the future until these safety concerns are addressed.

A really great find for us was the hanging chandelier on the False Creek side of the bridge. Where the bridge comes to rest in Yaletown is a large covered expanse of the underpinnings of the bridge from which hangs a glamorous crystal looking chandelier.

This chandelier is a show-stopper. It is public art. We love it. In 2019, $4.8M was paid for the piece entitled "Spinning Chandelier" which is more than 25 feet high. Upon occasion, it is purported to descend from the bridge, spin for 4 minutes, and flash its lights before retreating to its resting spot. I would love to have a timetable for when this happens.

Some part of me wonders if it wouldn't scare the bejeezus out of the unsuspecting. I imagine a future headline in the newspaper: "bicycle fatality when surprised cyclists flew over the side of False Creek after being surprised by the flying, spinning, bright lights of the 25 foot tall gift to the city." The creativity of the human mind never ceases to amaze me.

Large bridge along Granville street that connects Granville island to downtown. It has a walking path along each side. Not as nice of a bridge as burrard

I Prefer what’s Under the Bridge
apr. 2021
Completed in 1954, the Granville Street Bridge is an 8-lane steel truss bridge, connecting South Granville to downtown. It is thus a vital city link and serves a very functional purpose. For whatever reason, though, I don’t find myself as drawn to this bridge as, say, the nearby Burrard or Lions Gate bridges. I suppose the design plays a role here. It’s an older truss bridge, sure, but it doesn’t have the art deco style of Burrard, or the unique layout of Lions Gate. Furthermore, even though it’s older than the original Port Mann Bridge (1964-2012), Granville just seems less impressive to me – probably because the original Port Mann was recognized as the longest arch bridge in Canada. The Granville Bridge is reminiscent of mere cold steel.

Can you get nice views of False Creek? Sure! But you can also do that on other, more notable, bridges. Instead, I tend to be a fan of what’s underneath the Granville Street Bridge: 1) Granville Island; and, 2) The Spinning Chandelier. Granville Island is an amazing place for good eats, the arts and represents a unique shopping experience (see my earlier review on this site), whereas the Spinning Chandelier – located under the north end of the bridge – is an impressive new art installation that’s generated much debate about public art in the city. Both attractions are more than worthwhile and tend to overshadow the bridge itself . . . not that I’d recommend going out of your way just to see the bridge. Instead, observe it from the Vancouver Seawall and make your way towards Granville Island for a more worthwhile experience!

Pont

Nous sommes passés en bus, donc on n'a pas vu grande chose. Une fois rendus à Grandville Island, nous avons eu la vue d'en dessous du pont, qui était quand même intéressante.

Walkway to get to Granville Island
des. 2019 • Par
We walked along this bridge to get to Granville Island. The views from this bridge are spectacular! The bridge had quite an incline to it and there is no barrier separating the pedestrian walkway from the car lanes, so it's a little bit scary to walk over. There are walkways on both sides of the bridge.

片側3車線の広い道場のままかかる橋。グランビルアイランドに降りてからも見上げることができた
apr. 2019

jul. 2019
バンクーバーとグランビルアイランドを結んでいる大きな橋となります。ダウンタウン地区からバスでグランビルアイランドに行く際には通る橋だと思います。アクアバスを利用した際に下からも見ましたが、橋の大きさに驚きました。

Nice to be able to "walk" over to Granville Island
jul. 2019 • Par
Other than taking the water ferry (Aqua Bus, for one) or driving, or biking, or taking a bus, this is the only way to transverse False Creek. We began our walk at our hotel, Delta Marriott, (about 2 miles) and enjoyed the walk ... for the most part. There are some interesting things to see along the way and the homeless population (which is significant here on Granville Street) didn't concern us.

The views along the way included fantastic gargoyles on old buildings, great views of the cube building, and very impressive water vistas. Near the end of the bridge walk, there is a pedestrian/bike crossover to get to the underpass. No problems, it is safe and traffic allows people to make that walk across the road. This 1954 bridge is the third iteration of the span that crosses False Creek.

We would suggest walkers take the bridge walk over and then, at the end of the day on the Island, take the Aqua Bus Ferry back over to Yaletown for a different experience. Very reasonable and it runs regularly.

Convenient way to or from Granville Island
mai 2019 • Par
We cycled over the Granville Street Bridge on the side path after visiting Granville Island. It was a bit of a challenge to get on to it at the island end but there are some good views as you make your way across.

You need to be considerate of walkers and just be warned if you're cycling that crossing over so you can keep straight ahead on Granville Street when you get to the city end is a bit tricky so we dismounted and used the pedestrian crossings.

Nice views when walking across

I wanted to walk to Granville Island so I used the Granville St bridge. Granville St itself can be a bit gritty but the bridge was great. Fantastic views over the water and down into Granville Island. Worth a visit.
