The Girl In A Wetsuit is a lovely bronze sculpture of a girl in a wetsuit, sitting on a rock. It is situated on the north side of Stanley Park, by the seawall. It is not hard to see but it is a fair distance from the walkway making it a little difficult to get a clear view. It is reminiscent of Copenhagen's The Little Mermaid, but it is not a replica. Worth stopping by for a look.

This is a weathered, bronze, life size sculpture to look out for on a walk or cycle along the Stanley Park Seawall. She's sitting on a rock offshore. Not particularly spectacular, but worth a quick stop as you walk or cycle by. Reminiscent of the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen, Denmark.

A sculpture in a rock in the ocean along the Stanley park round. It is a life-size bronze sculpture from 1972 by Elek Imredy of a woman in a wetsuit with flippers on her feet and a mask on her forehead. Not at all a replica of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen.
She is not a mermaid. She is a modern woman.

I walk this way a few times a year, and this statue always looks a bit different. Is it the tide, I wonder? The light perhaps? Could be any number of things; but I find I must stop and think about what the sculptor was thinking, and the marvelous background.

Unveiled in 1972, the “Girl in a Wetsuit” is an iconic bronze sculpture by Elek Imredy. It is often compared – and rightly so – to Edvard Eriksen’s “The Little Mermaid” (1913), which is found in Copenhagen. Imredy has steadfastly denied that he intended to copy the work, but it is hard to ignore the similarities between the two sculptures (do a quick Google search and you’ll see what I mean). Imredy has said, rather, that scuba diving was getting popular in Vancouver and hence the impetus for the piece. I’d love to believe that’s all there is to it, but many an article has been written about “Girl in a Wetsuit” and the ways in which it skirted copyright issues. It seems updating the “Mermaid” figure into that of a scuba diver was sufficient enough for the piece to be considered original and only “influenced” by the Copenhagen Mermaid. C’est la vie!

In any event, in its near 50-year existence, the “Girl in a Wetsuit” has indeed become something of an icon in Stanley Park. Sitting as she does on the large stone, she appears to be gazing out at the ocean and contemplating . . . something. Perhaps she is thinking about the ongoing development around her (think north shore), or the growing possibilities of further ocean exploration? This is where our imaginations can run wild, infusing life into inanimate objects. The artist’s widow has suggested that the piece “represents Vancouver’s dependence on the sea and the necessity to use the sea for the benefit of all.” As I observed the statue from Stanley Park’s famed Seawall, I was unable to see how the “Girl in a Wetsuit” represented the importance of the sea to our City of Glass, but maybe I’m just not thinking outside the box enough? But then, we make of these public art installations what we want; after all, I made quite a bit out of Doug Coupland’s “Infinite Tire,” and I’m sure many of you would roll your eyes at that interpretation!

Thinking about this sculpture through the lens of a tourist, I wouldn’t say it’s worth a trip in itself; however, Stanley Park is such a massive place that one could easily take it in as part of a larger tour of the area. If you’re exploring the north side of Stanley Park, I’d suggest visiting the Brockton Point totems first and then follow this up with a walk (or cycle) along the Seawall. Doing so will allow you to take in much of what Stanley Park has to offer, including the famed “Girl in a Wetsuit.”

Nous avons vu la fille en combinaison lors de notre balade en vélo, au parc Stanley. J'ai tout de suite pensé à la Petite Sirène, de Copenhague.

We spent a good part of 2 days exploring Stanley Park. Just after we found it, a seagull landed on top of it.

This is a life size 1972 bronze sculpture of a woman in a wet suit, located on a rock in the water along the north side of Stanley Park. The head is modeled on that of the artists friend and the body on his wife.

There is some controversy around this as it looks almost like the Mermaid in Copenhagen, but the sculptor has stated "I didn't believe we should have a copy of the mermaid. She is rightfully a symbol of Copenhagen... I proposed to have a life-size scuba diver seated there. At that time scuba diving was getting quite popular here in Vancouver and, just as important, I didn't know of any similar sculpture anywhere in the world. It was a new idea… There was tremendous opposition and great controversy. I still don't know why."

I think that it is whimsical because of this but she clearly does have a wet suit and flippers on and a mask on her head and gazes into the distance. When we saw it the tide was in but I can imagine that the tide goes out beyond the sculpture leaving her high and dry.
