It is not easy to pass by this local legend without stopping to take a good look: she is after all in a strategic location overlooking the Inner Harbour near the BC Museum, Parliament Buildings, and The Empress Hotel behind her. Because she is placed at eye-level by a busy intersection, people are welcome to examine and pose with the Emily Carr statue and her monkey and dog — it is a whimsical piece from a distance but when you get up close, she is larger than life and so a bit intimidating — which likely captures a part of her personality. I’m not a fan of the stylization but it does make you curious to come and see her up close and learn who she is, and that is an achievement in itself.

Meeting Emily's statue up close, it struck us as an extremely informal glimpse at a lady who probably didn't give a rat's patootie what people thought. She was confident and comfortable in her own skin. It really sparked our search for the history leading up to this dedication of "Our Emily."
Calling her unconventional is an understatement. Her 74 years were filled with pioneer-like adventures and a deep affection for the indigenous peoples (First Nations) and affinity for the environment. Sometimes she sketched in charcoal and water color but diluted house paint (gasoline was used to thin it) was also a medium. Sometimes it was good old oil paint. And she also wrote. And taught. And ran a boarding house.
Her stint as an art teacher didn't last too long (one month); smoking and swearing at her students brought that to a crashing end. She also disliked institutionalized religion. So, how does this eccentric lady rise up to be "Our Emily", recognized for her post-impressionist bold colors with a lack of detail (think Van Gogh swirls and dots and Georgia O'Keefe vibrant flowing colors) pull this off?
It was a struggle to be an individualist during the 1870's in British Columbia; her strict-Presbyterian parents moved here from Great Britain because it was part of the colonies and would be until 1871 when Emily was born. Then it became Canadian. Her unconventional life involved many interactions with the First Nations peoples, which was reflected in a lot of her art.
The 74 years of her life came to an end in 1945 when she suffered the last of 4 heart attacks and a stroke (over a long period) and this 2010 bronze statue captures a bit of her eccentric individuality. Nothing fancy and formal here, she is happy with her pets (Woo and Billy) and her notepad/sketchpad.
Pleased to have made your acquaintance, Ms. Carr. Your contributions are most appreciated. Make your own stop to visit her sculpture at the Empress Hotel's corner, across from Inner Harbor.

I love sitting here while waiting to rendezvous. Lots of people to see, busily crossing an open intersection. This is a hub spot for the museum, the Legislature , the harbour and the Empress Hotel

The statue is a fine tribute to the Canadian artist and writer who was inspired by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast

Far from being a random statue of “some old man with a dog,” this bronze piece, unveiled in 2010 and titled “Our Emily,” sits proudly on the corner of Belleville and Government Streets (beside the Empress and overlooking the Harbour) and is, I think, a fitting tribute to Emily Carr, whom the accompanying plaque identifies as “Victoria’s best-known citizen.” Carr, who utilized a Modernist and Post-Impressionist style of painting, is perhaps best known for her vivid and powerful depictions of First Nations Villages on BC’s west coast concomitant with her works depicting the dense forests and totems. Viewed in conjunction with her written work (“Klee Wych” is a powerful and must read), she was able to concisely chronicle early life in some of the most remote parts of our Province.
The bronze statue, situated as it is beside the Empress, ensures that Emily Carr, as artist and writer, gets her fair due. Here, we see her seated with her sketchpad resting on her knee, perhaps looking for her next subject; her pet monkey, “Woo,” sitting on her shoulder; and, her loyal dog, Billie, nearby. As a tribute, it captures some of the best of Carr – hinting at her artistic and writing abilities as well as her well-known eccentricity.
Emily Carr’s paintings, while undoubtedly of key significance within the Canadian cannon, do draw mixed reviews. Some dislike the simplified and abstract forms used to depict totems, for instance, while others embrace it as the start of an early artistic movement. For me, I appreciate the works and the artist because she shifted away from mere “impressions” of landscapes (think of artists, poets and writers from the Romantic period) to something that looked a little more “real.” That, and many of the scenes she depicted or wrote about are ones we can still visit and relate to today.

We stay at the Empress and always walk the Westies to this statue to sniff the dog. They are no fooled but still look at it. This is a great entrance decoration to the Empress grounds and real Canadian honour to the artist. Look it over carefully.

ガバメントストリートとベルビルストリートの交差する角にありました。細い道を通ってエンプレスホテルに向かっていく入り口のところです。犬の像が可愛かったのを覚えています。
