The great thing about Wharf Street is that it connects great parts of Victoria together. Getting in between the Inner Harbour to Chinatown is a great experience with lots of excellent options for food, pictures or a rest along the way. Red Fish Blue Fish is right on Wharf, which for my money is some of the best fish and chips I've had anywhere, so definitely check that out. The Johnson Street Bridge and the art installation is also worth a look. There life on Wharf Street and is an integral part of the Victoria experience. You may not have to see Wharf street, like the Inner Harbour, but why would you not want to get the full experience while in this great city!

Ah, Wharf Street! I’ve driven and walked this stretch, which basically runs along the perimeter of the Inner Harbour from the Greater Victoria Visitor Centre and north towards Johnson Street Bridge (where the name changes to Store Street), countless times over the years. If walking at a good pace, you can easily walk the length of Wharf Street in ten minutes, if not less. As such, it’s a fairly short strip of land, but there’s a lot packed in here to see, explore and experience.

Wharf Street is a busy part of Victoria’s Old Town (see my earlier review on this site). Thanks to its proximity to Chinatown (see my earlier review), the downtown core and Government Street, visitors will inevitably come upon Wharf Street and experience its bustling shops, eclectic restaurants and interesting history. On the latter point, Old Town, inclusive of Wharf Street, played a key and defining role in the early development of this Province. For proof of this, we need only look at the Old Custom House (1875), which served as an important point of entry for goods coming into the country. Later, when the Klondike gold rush was well under way (1897), the Custom House was a necessary stop for papers and permits. There are, of course, many other historic buildings along Wharf Street, including the Caire & Grancini Warehouse (1314 Wharf), built in 1860; the Norwestra Building (1218 Wharf), also built in 1860; and the Rithet Building (1117-1129 Wharf), built between 1861 and 1889. Indeed, these historic buildings, plus many others, add to the charm of Victoria’s Wharf Street.

As one ambles about Wharf Street, there are a few notable attractions to be observed and experienced along the way: 1) Bastion Square, while more prominent at View and Government Streets, is accessible from Wharf. In the modern day, this lovely Square functions more as an outdoor market with re-purposed heritage buildings; however, I find its darker history of jail and gallows far more interesting. 2) The Homecoming Statue by Nathan Scott, unveiled in 2010, is a powerful monument that captures the moment a sailor returns home and is greeted by his daughter. With just a single image, Scott is able to articulate, in the most powerful of ways, the impacts of conflict on our physical selves and our psyches. Observing this statue, one cannot help but feel for those families who cannot reunite because of the ravages of war and conflict. 3) Seaplanes and Harbour Ferries. This one is self-explanatory and a very functional purpose/activity on Wharf Street. Its proximity to the inner harbour makes it an obvious spot to fly or ride by sea. 4) Finally, I’d be remiss if I failed to mention Catawampus Fudge & Funk . . . just because ;)

Besides the various shops and attractions there are, of course, a number of tasty restaurants situated along Wharf Street: Nautical Nellies is a great place for local seafood; The Keg is a reliable chain restaurant; Red Fish Blue Fish has become something of a local legend for their innovative takes on British classics; and, the Flying Otter, down by the Harbour Air Seaplanes, offers great seaside views and reasonably-priced lunch and dinner options sure to please even the fussiest of eaters. Oh, and if you want your coffee fix, there’s a Starbucks, too. . .

Since 2019, Wharf Street has gotten a little more congested thanks to the two-way bike lanes installed at the behest of Lisa Helps. While cyclists no doubt enjoy the new addition, I think it detracts from the historic atmosphere of Wharf Street while concomitantly making driving in this area that much more difficult. Maybe I’m just becoming an old curmudgeon? Anyway, ranting aside, Wharf Street is a nice place to stroll in Victoria. The views of the inner harbour are nice; the shops are varied; the rows of historic buildings add character; and, the restaurant selection is quite good.

A really nice place to check out the shops and their contents. It is an historic area that has been refurbished and maintained really well, and is well worth a visit while on the island.

Apart from the road construction this was a nice walk to see the river traffic and see some war memorial sites.

This section of Wharf Street runs from the Victoria Visitor Center up towards Chinatown. It has some historical buildings along the way along with water views. There are some nice restaurants and shops along the way. We are impressed with Victoria's bike system, one of which runs along this road.

Love walking along here as opposed to driving which is nerve racking with all the bikes and people walking. WE walked all along and the sidewalks are a bit narrow and there seems to be no left or right as people tend to walk down the middle. Lots of homeless kids hang out near the bridge.

Walk along the water where you can see it. This can be a very busy walkway. Old facades of buildings

A nice walk, with some wonderful views of the Inner Harbour.
Some nice shops, restaurants and bars here.
When the cruise ships are in port, we tend to stay away as it gets a bit busy then.
