From the moment we walked into the gardens, we felt that it was well cared for and loved by the people who maintain it. The plants were all very healthy and there was a good variety of shrubs, trees and flowers beautifully positioned throughout the grounds. Worth a visit to get a bit of serenity and zen into your day.

A five-acre garden with lots of beautiful trees, shrubs and flowers, organized by Prince and Princess Abhkazi after the second world war and fortunately saved from developers in 2000. Now run by volunteers under the auspices of the Land Conservancy of British Columbia. Well worth a visit, especially before or after a visit to the Tea House.

A small but beautiful garden with a handful of short paths and loops as well as peaceful places to sit and enjoy. Admission by donation makes this a really great affordable stop while in Victoria (bring cash if you wish to leave a donation).

We loved meandering through the garden and seeing all of the interesting foliage and beautiful blooms. High Tea was a delightful bonus. The tea was delicious and the pastries were unique and enjoyable. Our tour guide was Realita (?) and our bus driver was Emily. We enjoyed the beauty of Victoria with our guides information.

If you go take a tea, then stroll in the garden. It's quiet, taken care by volunteers that are cheerful. The place is nice, you don't have the name of the flowers and trees, but there is a nice pond with many flowers.

Lovely quiet gardens off the beaten track. We did not have time to stay for tea but the teahouse and outdoor seating area looked fabulous for a less crowded tea than The Empress Hotel. We saw a group of ladies on the patio having a beautiful time together looking out on the gardens. While we toured the small, well maintained grounds a young couple was planning the best spot for wedding photos. I can imagine anywhere in the garden would be ideal. The teahouse blends well with the natural surroundings as designed by the architect.

We didn’t plan to visit the gardens but because of flight difficulties between Victoria and Toronto, we stayed for an extra day. We were staying at a hotel in the inner harbour area and it took us about an hour to walk to the gardens. We walked through residential areas and saw more of the city up close. We visited mid June and I think the garden was likely in peak performance a few weeks earlier but still, it was lovely. The volunteer who welcomed us was welcoming and there were many volunteers working in the gardens on the day we visited. We decided to stay for high tea. ( I think $65.00 each.) We aren’t tea or coffee drinkers so were charged extra for ginger ale. The table we had was super as we had a sweeping view of the garden and our plate of treats: wee sandwiches, scones, cookies, & squares was very nice. To return, we took the city bus back and the stop to catch the bus is about half a block from the gardens near a school and just $2.50 each. There’s a donation box on the way out and I think $10 was suggested per guest. We enjoyed this unplanned day very much.

Bad service. We made a reservation by e-mail, which had been confirmed. At arrival we were told they only make reservations by phone. Because there was a party of 40 people there was no place for us. Their only excuse was that the kitchen already closed.
Very disappointing since we were on a road trip and not be able to visit another day. We looked forward to this high tea…

Enjoyed the high tea. Small room but food very good. Scones were the best! Arrived early to view the garden. 30-40 minutes is ample. Gift shop on site also.

Intimate garden that is tailored to the site superbly. The story of its creation is great too.
Had high tea and lucked out to get the table with the best view. The garden is paid for by donation and people don't pay much, they catch up by making the high tea quite dear, but it's excellent and a unique experience in such a lovely place.

Should we choose High or Afternoon Tea? How much difference is there?
Roberto R

I would recommend their Royal High Tea over the Afternoon Tea. Admittedly we have only tried the former, but if I look at the difference in the courses for the two offerings on their web page it seems to me that the simpler version lacks precisely those touches of refinement (such as the smoked salmon blinis with crème fraîche) that made the High Tea experience so enjoyable. Even at $50 the High Tea is par for Victoria standards; the Afternoon Tea is ten dollars cheaper but life is too short.

We are coming for a cruise excursion and it doesn’t arrive until 6:30 pm, will we be able to enjoy the garden? We booked through the cruise line but I’m worried whether it will be worth it?

My wife and I went on the same cruise that gets into Vancouver at 6 and leaves like around 10 o'clock. By the time you get off of the ship go somewhere and then get back, you really don't have time to get your money's worth on any of the excursions. If I had to do it over again, I would either stay on the ship or I would get of the ship and have a taxi take me downtown to goof around for a few hours. There is just not enough time to do much else. The cruise ship stops there because US law requires they do so.
Are the main paths and the tea house wheelchair accessible?

It is a rock and gravel path and some stairs at the cottage and also stairs if you want to dine outside of the house.

I am traveling with a group of 10 family members on a cruise to Victoria. We arrive at 1:00pm and depart for Vancouver at midnight.
We would like to tour the garden and have tea.
What transportation options are available?

Are you coming in at the cruise ship terminal? Cruise ships dock at the Ogden Point cruise ship terminal, Its is in the southwest corner of the downtown core. Abkhazi Garden is a longer walk along the shoreline sidewalk (beautiful walk in nice weather.), I am guessing an hour walk one way. Taxi ride for 10 might cost $20 per cab. To see the entire gardens can be done in an hour.
How long are you staying in Victoria and how long do you want to be in the garden. The drive for for is not far and with my SUV I can do the trip in 2 rounds. (depends what time your boat arrives, the weather and where else you want to go.
Abkhazi Gardens, 1964 Fairfield Road, +1 250 598-8096,
Prince and Princess Abkhazi along with designer John Wade came together and created a garden that took over 40 years to come together on a beautiful property overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains.

Is there anything blooming in early May?
Karen A
Saanich, British Columbia70 bidrag
It is currently early March with cherry, lotus, magnolia trees in full bloom. Daffodils and crocuses are up, tulips will follow. By May these things will be done but the garden beds will take over. Check out Butchart Gardens website for timing of displays.

We have a scheduled visit through a tour on September 28. However, tour has set the tea and garden visit at 5:30 pm. I am wondering whether we will actually be able to see the gardens in the evening - are their lights? Thanks.

Hello from Victoria! I am a local tour guide. I just called Abkhazi Garden. Yes, there are ground-level lights, but - more importantly - they tell me they do not have any bookings listed for Sept. 28. Probably best to check with your tour operator. Hope this helps.
