Un petit bijou, à quelques minutes de route de Victoria, qui permet de voir des forêts de grands arbres. Idéal si on n'a que peu de temps sur l'île de Vancouver, ce qui était notre cas.

We just completed the 3m Centennial Loop and while some spots early on were a bit close to the street once you got deeper into the trail it was amazing. The terrain had a lot of light elevation changes and varied terrain throughout so you felt like you were on a hike vs just a walk. The natural rain forest was spectacular with the different trees and smells. One small muddy area that was easily passable. The trails are all well marked. Highly recommend.

Not very far from Victoria, about a half-hour drive from the downtown, and on the way to Butchart Gardens is this wonderful nature park. It has a nice accessible walking loop through the forest, but the real attraction for us kids from the prairies was the Heritage Grove... A group of towering Douglas Fir trees. The park is also home to one of my favourite animals, the banana slug. Why is it one of my favourites? I don't know, they're just so huge and neat! This wilderness place is well worth stopping off between the charming manicured Britishness of Victoria and Butchart Gardens.

I genuinely enjoy Francis King Regional Park. With its many trails and pathways, this park offers us a generous and much needed reprieve from our own concrete jungles and hectic lives. After a tough day, what better way to recharge than by going on a leisurely stroll through the forest and taking in some fresh air?
For me, the highlight of Francis King Regional Park is the Elsie King Trail, which is an 800 meter loop of boardwalk and smooth gravel – optimally maintained for those with young kids and/or disabilities. As you amble through this little slice of paradise, one cannot help but admire the natural flora laid out before you. “Naturalist’s Notes” are strategically laid out at key points along the boardwalk to provide further context to what you’re seeing, be it the age of Douglas Firs, the amazing life and times of the Thatcher ant, or the importance of nurse logs. The trail, then, is both a fine workout and educational!
But while all of that’s great – and it is – probably the biggest reason why this trail has a soft spot with me is because it’s the first outdoorsy activity M and I did together. We've been here countless times since then, but it's always the first visit that holds the greatest weight. We were both a bit slimmer back then, and I had less grey hair. As I recall, it was nice to sit for a moment under the covered bench and just admire the beauty of nature on such a sunny, clear day; and then to pose for pictures under the famous fallen tree. 'Twas was a nice short jaunt, one that will stick in my memory for a long time.
So, take advantage of nature. It's a great way to clear the mind, refresh, unwind and begin the day anew.

We enjoyed trekking this 800m loop, which has excellent interpretive signage and a range of facilities (toilet, water fountain, rest benches and a shelter) suitable for all ages. It's mostly very well-maintained boardwalk, but offers a number of diverging forest trails which loop back to the car park.
Signage explains the three 'layers' of forest: herb layer, shrub layer and canopy layer. Iconic trees include Douglas Firs up to 500 years old, Red Cedars and occasionally Arbutus. Sword Ferns thrive in clearings.
Intermittent very light showers didn't seem to deter families with young children, or runners we encountered on the loop. We'd expected to see deer, which abound in the Saanich area, but the popularity of the trail probably deters native fauna.
The park is a priceless resource for locals and visitors, preserving and protecting an almost pristine natural environment. NB: Dogs _must_ be kept on leashes.

I went to Francis King Regional Park last summer, though not as impressive as Avatar Grove near Port Renfrew, it’s still worthwhile. Great hiking trails!

This is little park that has great short walking trails in beautiful old tree forest. It is a little out of the way but pleasant drive to get there. There is one very flat well groomed trail that leads past huge pines and lush vegetation. Other paths are well marked and more natural. Lots of options and well marked. Great for short walks with the family.
