We’ve been here twice. We went the first time for the Festival du Voyageur, and the second time for the Enigma Escape from the Fort games day. Both times we were very impressed by the authenticity of the area without it being boring or stuffy. The staff and the grounds make it a very fun way to learn about Canada’s history.

Riel,is "The Father of Manitoba". Riel is to Canada what Nelson Mandela is to South Africa, or what Dr. Martin Luther King was to the United States. His home is just a building, yes. It is what emanated from that building that it's preservation hope to preserve. Been past it many times. Note,my visit date is wrong

My kids like coming here. On Thursday nights in the summer they have activities for kids and fiddling. Often there are days where there is free corn or bannock.

I went here in the off-season with the thought that there would be much more to see than there was. The site is small and only has the one building, which was closed when I was there. I'm not sure it would be worth returning to.

We were very pleased at how informative the guides (dressed in period attire) were in explaining both Metis culture and the history of both the house and the Riel family. Its a small site, but very interesting. The estate belonged to the Riel family and Louis Riel lay'd in state in the Parlour before finally being put to rest.

This "historic property" provides an interesting... and important insight into Louis Riel's background and the community from which he came... and whose "perceived interests" he, and his followers acted upon!! Its definitely worth a visit!!

The Riel House and grounds was like a little oasis in the midst of suburban Winnipeg. The Riel family lived in the house until the late 60s so none of the original furnishings were there but the house contained typical finishing from the 1880s. The costumed interpreter gave visitors many interesting facts and anecdote about life in the late 19th century. The grounds were also interesting and lovingly maintained by the local historic society. A guide took around the grounds and explained that the flowers in the garden were those native to the prairies. The vegetable garden had heritage plants too. Produce from the garden is donated to a local food bank when it is harvested. The cost of this site is free. I would recommend a visit if you are in Winnipeg and like history.

While Riel House was a well-preserved site in a nice location, it lacked vibrancy. Upon arrival the staff stuck to themselves in a group and did not engage the visitors to interpret the history. We were only approached to pay the entry fee and to pay for souvenirs.
Perhaps they make more of an effort with visiting school groups.
The grounds and gardens were well maintained.
Unfortunately we did not get a good interpretation of the Métis traditions.
After making the long trip from Toronto, we were disappointed.

As with many smaller historical sites the quality of the visit is often tied to the ability of the organizers to provide knowledgeable guides. The guide we had today was well educated about this site and the family who lived here.

This attraction might be a small one but it was rich with details about the life and times of one Family, who also happened to be the family of a significant figure in Manitoba's history. The details of Riel and his family were well presented in the plaques outside the home and there were more details inside. If you want to learn about a slice of Manitoba life at the end of the 19th century and also learn more about the Riel family this site should be on your list to visit.

It is only open in the summer, but it is open so go take a drive down River Road in Winnipeg and you may just stumble upon this little slice of history.
