Pier 21 operated as an immigration station from 1928 through 1971 and was Canada's equivalent of Ellis Island. So it was appropriate for the Canadian Museum of Immigration to be based there. It is an excellent museum and I recommend it highly.
There were posters promoting immigration to Canada. There was a special exhibit devoted to the Enslavement of Black People in Canada. An example of someone who rebelled against slavery was Marie-Josephe Angelique. She set fire to Montreal in 1734 which destroyed half the city.
Other exhibits show a tourist class (third class) cabin on an immigrant ship in the 1950s. A fun exhibit was the test to become a Canadian citizen. Even though I am not Canadian, I knew enough about the country to pass the test. I received a sticker which translated as "I succeeded".

My wife and I really enjoyed this museum. We toured their slavery exhibit and then took their English- speaking tour @ 2:00. The tour was offered hourly when we visited. The tour was very good and you can catch a 22-minute film once your tour ends. The film as also well done. After that we toured a number of the exhibits. They were very informative and interesting.
I think we spent about an hour and a half here. We could have stayed a little longer but were running behind schedule.
Recommended.

Very interesting museum that I've been in before. This time we did the guided tour, with a short film, which was much better as our guide was excellent. She knew so much and was very interesting.

Great displays. The movie was fantastic and should be shown in schools! The slavery exhibit was well done and informative. Food at the cafe was delicious and we enjoyed the selection from the gift shop. As with most museums, time and patience along with reading allow a full visual of the concept but there are many great visuals to get the point across for those who are not interested in reading all of the information.

The staff and museum are superlative. The artifacts, photos, multi-media displays, simulations and tour guide presentations almost literally, put you in the shoes of the new Canadians. Add to this, the compendium of data in the Family History Centre archives and the most competent searchers (Tx Sarah M), and your experience becomes positively overwhelming. Thank you to everyone involved.

I was here on a cruise and took advantage of the free tour, it was very interesting and useful! We were taken room to room and saw the entire process of the immigrants. The opportunity to sit in a 'colonist car' train display was a bonus, and the included movie was amazing to see the stories of modern immigrants. Well done!

We had a great guided tour of this museum. The museum is done very well and gives a clear visual history of immigration into Canada . A must do in Halifax.

The story is clear. Why people left their homes, the process for getting to Canada, the journey, arrival and settling. Some fascinating personal stories that stay with you. A large spacious museum; nice little cafe bar and shop. Lots for kids to engage with, from dressing up to writing and colouring.

An incredible museum of what our parents went through to come to Canada in the 50s and 60s. There were other areas to visit, but we were pressed for time. Very organized and lots of to see! I also got an information envelope of the ship my Dad came on , at the office, if you have the date of arrival. Everyone is very polite and helpful.

im curious if back100 years ago ,if these immigrants had any support agencies like we have now a days
Skrevet 31. august 2022
Jay: The simple answer is no. There were no government agencies. Church members and good-natured people assisted where they could, but many people feared an influx of immigrants who would work for substandard wages--economic discrimination. My forbear Josephus Murphy at age 14 immigrated from Ireland in the 1840s. His parents died on the ship. It was a harsh beginning in a new world. This is what impressed me about Halifax and the Maritimes. Immigrants are welcomed, and there are agencies that assist the transition. I'm amazed by the generosity of Haligonians.

Can you look up family names at this location?

hello! yes, you can do family history research and immigration records research at the Museum's Scotiabank Family History Centre. It's a good idea to read through their website to find out specifics of what kind of information they can find. Note some immigration records are still sealed by Canada's privacy laws:

Could you advise if there is a typical line up on a Saturday or Sunday morning ? Travelling with an elderly mother in law and line ups without place to sit is going to prove to be challenging.
thank you
Skrevet 1. august 2019
I was just there recently, there was not much of a line. If you are
waiting for the guided tour there is some people waiting or you can visit it on your own at your own pace. The only line up I saw
was for people to get records which now I know only the actual people that arrived at Pier 21 can get access to. Hope this helps

We are planning a Nova Scotia cruise on Holland America in early August and would like to visit the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 to explore family history. I'm wondering how much time you might suggest be budgeted? Depending upon how much time is necessary, we might like to explore some of the other area historical and scenic attractions (Citadel, Maritime museum, Public Gardens, etc.).
Thank you for any insights and advice you might offer.

Hi Jpmack210,
If you would like to see both exhibitions, the film In Canada and to visit the Scotiabank Family History Centre we recommend 2 to 3 hours. Your ship will be right in front of the museum so you may want to visit us first then go to the other sites or see them and come to the Canadian Museum of Immigration last. Whatever route you plan one day is sufficient for all of the things you mentioned.
We hope to see you in August! Please do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to get more information or visit our website.
