A very impressive building, over 200 years old. You can watch the guards change! Entrance is free and tours last about 30 minutes

This is one of the oldest buildings in town. We sneaked a peak as we wandered the city center and noted the impressive interior design. Some provincial functions occur here and you can tour.

Recently visited this Government House during a private tour. Very nice experience with lots of history here. Tour guide was very knowledgeable with the royal family details. Highly recommended!

Government House is a delightful structure located in downtown Halifax. Home to Nova Scotia’s Lieutenant Governor it serves as both residence and working office where foreign dignitaries such as members of The Royal Family are received. The tour is not long and covers only the ground floor. The guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the home.

Honestly, I didn't even know that you could go on a tour of Government House. As we were walking by, we saw a sign saying that the tour was free today. What a coincidence! Several rooms on the ground floor are open to the public. The tour itself takes about a half hour, but you can learn a lot of interesting information about this place during it, for example why there are two entrances in the Government House (btw that's a really funny story).

A beautiful tour - amazing tour guide- this is a short tour but thick with history and you never know who you may run into on your visit. What a surprise it was to meet The Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc and his beautiful wife Rosemarie Patricia LeBlanc during our tour today. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us - you’re welcome for the weather ;)

The Government House is a nicely-built Georgian's style mansion house the residence of the Sovereign's representatives of Nova Scotia since 1805. Free tours are available in summer period but not on a daily basis.

The "people's house" rose to the occasion and extended its hand to aid the "people" during the time of incredible need. This is actually a far cry from how this uppity-up, hoity toity, fancy-pants dream began.
Governor of Nova Scotia, John Wentworth, required the construction of a manor more befitting the dignity of his office and his noble birth (and one his wife would actually agree to inhabit). In 1800, his wish was granted and this Georgian lovely (all the style in 1720-1840 England and the colonies) was erected: note the symmetrical windows, hipped roof, etc.
It is 210 years old and is the oldest consecutively occupied government residence in North America, rivaling the White House as the oldest official residence. Oh, what money could buy. This beauty hosts a drawing room, dining room, ballroom, suites for the governor, family, and servants, and so much more.
Today, it is sometimes (but not always) open for tours. If the sentry boxes outside are closed, it isn't open. While we were there (in September), we saw the American Flag outside the building. Thank you, Halifax, for remembering our 9-11 disaster and tragedy. No strangers are you, to loss and pain and expressions of like-minded sympathy. This American appreciates your kind expression. Halifax, you raised the bar!

We were here for a very short time deciding not to invest part of our day on dry historical exploration. It was a beautiful day and out we went.

This mansion is a huge part of our Nova Scotian history. The only drawback on my latest visit was that the particular guide we had didn't seem very knowledgable about many things inside of the house. She kept saying: "but we don't know where that came from...or what that's for..." I was there a few years ago and the guide then was able to tell us a lot more. I almost felt I could've given a better commentary.
