We thought fall would be a beautiful time of year to drive the Rideau Canal and visit stops along the way. Unfortunately, most tourist sites had already closed for the season. While driving through Kingston Ontario was came across the Murney Tower which is on a hill near the water. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rideau Canal and Kingston Fortifications. It is the oldest operating museum in Kingston, a beautiful town with huge stately homes. It is located on the west shore of Kingston Harbour.
Sadly, all we could do was walk around the Tower and enjoy the beautiful scenery and the sunny day. You must buy a $2 ticket to park near the Tower. It is open May 20 through September 4.

A worthy visit if in Kingston; entry fee is by donations to fund this historical site. The exhibits give you a good idea of life living there in its days of use. Not sure how families were raised in there! The cannon room is interesting. Overall this was interesting.

The last time we were here the tower was undergoing renovation.
There are three floors to explore, stairs are narrow and steep but worth the effort. The bottom floor has narrow passageways and leads you to many different rooms, the first floor has many artifacts and information regarding the tower and the top floor holds the defensive cannon and limited views of the surrounding area, worth noting is the artwork spread around the top floor almost like a spider's web.
well worth a visit and parking is generally available nearby.

We made sure to stop here at Murney Tower as soon as we arrived in Kingston because we were only staying from Sun-Tue and the museum is only open from Wed-Sun. We were in luck too because we easily found an empty parking spot in the Waterfront parking lot and since Sun happens to be free parking day in Kingston, that saved us $2/hr.
We took photos of the exterior before stepping on the drawbridge and going inside the tower. We were greeted by staff as soon as we walked inside. There are 3 floors to explore on a self-guided tour. From the first floor which served as sleeping quarters, we took the stone spiral staircase to the top floor and viewed the Blomefield cannon. I have never seen a Martello tower before so I was intrigued by the circular track which allowed the cannon to aim out of any of the windows. Each of the windows looks out a different view--Murney Tower has windows overlooking Wolfe Island, Snake Island, Lake Ontario, St. Lawrence River, Fort Henry, etc. Afterwards, we retraced our steps to the first floor and took the narrow steep stairs to the bottom floor where we inspected all the rooms including the 4 identical caponiers that extend out from the tower base. It is hard to imagine how soldiers back then could properly aim their rifles through the tiny slit openings. We did not stay long as it is not a big museum. No washrooms on site. Admission to Murney Tower is by donation.
Since our hotel happened to be within walking distance, we got to visit Murney Tower again during an early evening walk at the waterfront. The drawbridge gate was closed so one cannot go past it but one can walk outside the walls, take photos or just enjoy the scenery without the sun beating down one's head.

This unusually shaped building is situated along Kingston's waterfront pathway. A great place to stop and enjoy the view of the lake!

The site has three levels to visit, interesting bits of information for those who are interested in reading the information about the history here. It didn't take very long to visit this museum, but it's narrow stairs only to move about, no elevator. Small fee to visit.

Granted it’s not very big, but the exhibits they do have were interesting. It’s nice to see, the cannons upstairs are quite something, The feat of engineering is something to be admired. I didn’t mind the entrance fee, thought it very reasonable to be honest. The ladies behind the desk assisted in any further information you may have needed.

The park itself outside the Historic Site is great, you can walk among the waterside, enjoy the view on marina, tower, little things here and there like a little art project looking like a spilled buckets of paint.. recommended for a short walk.
