The Glen is a wonderful place to hike, with trails under the escarpment and along the Niagara River. The views are worth the trek. Be prepared to do a lot of climbing and covering rough ground. Lovely picnic park on the grounds above the glen. Would do this again. Make sure you pay enough in the parking meter to last your entire trek. We did half the trails and it took us 2 hours, with all the stopping for views and photos. Parking is expensive ( not a surprise in NIagara Falls!), but admisson to th glem is free.

You can have a nice picnic lunch in the top sector of the glen. There are a few bbq pits too. For the more active or if you want to work off lunch, head down the stairs to walk any of the trails. Most of the terrain is pretty flat. The roar of the Niagara River will be your constant companion. You can scramble over large rocks to get very
close to the fast flowing waters. If lucky, the jetboat will go by while you are there. You can also do some bouldering in this area or just meander to appreciate the trees [part of a Carolinian Forest] and any flora and fauna about.

Plusieurs circuits de randonnées permettent d'admirer la rivière Niagara de différents endroits (et avec des difficultés variables).
En pleine automne, les couleurs de la forêt sont magnifiques.

All those beautiful views of niagara riverr are accessible or visible along the niagara river recreational trail which begins around whirlpool aerocar, before it, its a paved sidewalk.
And the safety logs have to be crossed to see those majestic views though its unsafe. But walking along the trail towards niagara glen, after upperwhirlpool trails we can see those amazing views.
We started our walk from Butterfly Manor all the way to butterfly conservatory in search of these views and thats how ended up hiking the niagara glen nature reserve. A steep staricase behind the niagara glen nature centre leads to hiking trails below, they are pretty steep and tricky, winding through the forest and rocks eventually to water.the way had me gasping for breath at intervals but it was an adventure in itself.Views along were serene but there were trees blocking the full view of rapids. and its very very dangerous to cross saftey signs to get a full view.once down i tried getting into water just a little bit and badly slipped ( not hurt though) as the rocks had algae and were very very slippery !

Beautiful park and trails. Stunning and awe inspiring scenery. Quiet and serene immersion in nature just minutes from the tourist areas.
Go early in the day before it gets busy (pre 10am). Pick up a map at the park building and talk to the people who work there. They will give you great advice for your walk based on your hiking ability. I saw many people who were really struggling and someone who ended up needing help to get out. You need very good mobility, decent cardio and some hiking experience. Would not suggest going when it is rainy or wet, the rocks would be quite slippery I think.

Great scenery along the Niagara river. The trails are moderate due to their rocky and vertical nature. Well worth the effort

What a great place. We came here with the intention of hiking down to Whirlpool Beach, which we'd seen earlier in the week from up at the Aero Car. After getting a trail map (which everyone should do; we were astonished how many people stopped us to ask for directions) and consulting with a very nice fellow up at the Nature Centre, we determined that we probably didn't have enough time to get all the way there and back in the time we had available. Never mind - we made it down to the water at the River Trail, from where we could see the jet boats coming by. To other prospective visitors I would say give yourself more time than you think, and wear sensible footwear for hiking over uneven and at times rough terrain.

We heard about the Niagara Glen Trail and decided to find it. It’s a hike for people who are able-bodied, not good for anyone who has knee issues or health issues. Parking lot is not very big, cost is $2.50/hr and across from Niagara Whirlpool Golf. We paid $5.00 for two hours and were there approx 1.5hrs. Once you’ve parked , follow the path to your right. You will see an opening in the Glen/Gorge with a dirt/rocky path. There are squared off rough timbers used as makeshift uneven stairs in the dirt. We were here on a sunny/non-rainy day., so the ground was dry. These make-shift stairs are not even steps, they are 12”-18” tall steps. There must be 200-300 of them or more. Going down is a challenge, you must wear good runners that you don’t mind getting dirty., Do not wear sandals! About half way down the make-shift stairs end, and you are deep in the tree canary. Very serene and beautiful!. There is a small creek that meanders down. The path is tampered down dirt and very very rocky, most rocks are small boulders you have to navigate on the rest of the way down. Take your time going down, took us approx 20 mins to bottom. The trail is serene, amazing trees all around. Beautiful nature. At the bottom is a large opening to a rocky shoreline to the Niagara River. The Niagara River has strong currents. This is not a swimming area! Two young people drowned just last week. This is a viewing shoreline only! Looking up you can see gondola ride on Canadian side. The Niagara Jet tours boats comes to this area and do their spin then go back down the river. You can see Americans hiking on the other side. Canadian side has the curved rocky shoreline. It was not super crowded, maybe 20 people. Few families with 10 years old and above made it down. This hike is not good for young children! Too dangerous! If you have any health issues, do not attempt it! Going back up is more of a challenge!! Took us 25 mins with many mini breaks!
Overall, it was very nice to see. One and done for me, I’m not a hiker nor super fit. I was almost in tears trying to make my way back up those horrible stairs, thank God my husband helped steady me. My knee is still in pain a day later.
This adventure trail is completely “use at your own risk”!!!
Also, there’s 2nd trail down to this area. I asked an older (very fit) couple who came down the other trail, and the gentleman said it’s very rocky and slippery, they wore hiking boots and had walking poles, were experienced hikers!
We later drove to the gondola and were able to look down into the Glen/Gorge.....I realized it must be 500metres, half a kilometre hike one way!!

I read that the Niagara Glen hours are 10-4....given you need to go down the stairs, is there a gate that restricts access? Meaning at 10am does someone from Niagara Parks open access to the stairs?

Hi! I was planning on visiting the Glen on Saturday morning, but I'm not sure if I should take my car. How big is the parking lot and is it hard to find a spot on weekends?

Does public transportation stop near here?

The WEGO green line stops near there. I believe there's also connections to Niagara Falls transit. The public transportation here isn't great (buses only go every hour), but the WEGO has a much better schedule, especially during tourist season.
I want to bring my dog, as he loves hikes. But I'm not sure how well he'd do on the metal stairs. Is there another staircase down to the trails?

Unfortunately where the majority of the trails are there is no other way down. At the far end of the park near the whirlpool, there are normal stairs that lead down to the whirlpool. It's a LONG walk from the whirlpool back to all the other trails using the trail along the river(over an hour).

I don't believe you can snowshoe as the tracks are pretty treacherous.
