My child (14) and I visited and were greatly surprised to discover more about the world in which we live, seen through the eyes of other creatures who inhabit this planet. We learned about the earth and what sustains and supports us as well as how dependent we are upon it. The live butterfly experience was truly amazing, enchanting, and exciting for us both.

Very interesting place if you like nature and especially instects.
It is quite small, don’t expect to see a regular size museum. The collection of preserved insects is impressive. there are several living tarantulas, praying mantis and a few other spices.
I enjoyed holding one of the tarantulas in my hand.
The guide was very patient as I had lots of questions.
I would have appreciated that each of the displayed insects had a name mentionned next to it or in a separate sticker like in regular museums. However if you have more time to spend there than I had you could play at finding the names in the insects book made available in the place.

I also liked very much that the guide proposed to lend me a macro lens for my phone to take close ups of some of the insects. I love photohraphy do that was quite cool!

Hopefully with time they will have more live spices to show.

During our stroll to parliament hill and downtown Ottawa, we (my two daughters ages 9 & 12 and I) came across Ottawa Insectarium. What a pleasant surprise! Our guide was very knowledgeable and made the experience super fun. We learned a lot about many insects (stick insects, tarantulas, scorpions, cockroaches, etc). We even held some which was super cool! A must-visit if one is in the downtown Ottawa area and great for all ages.

I found the price steep for one room of half dead bugs (half were alive). There were more alive insects at the Museum of Nature as part of their general admission.

Nous y sommes allés en famille. Tout petit endroit, mais très chaleureux et comme nous étions les seuls, nous avons eu droit à une petite visite personnalisée avec un guide attentionné qui avait tout son temps. Possibilité de prendre plusieurs insectes. Vraiment bien.

I went to visit the place since it had so many good reviews. I was so surprised when I got there. It was just one room. Very small, with two sides of display. Me and my children spent only 10 minute inside.(They wanted to leave after 1minute I had to force them to look at everything). My children was really disappointed. There was not much live insect to see just those dead in the display panels on the side of the wall and a few box with spiders and stuff. For what they charge it’s quite not worth it. I don’t know how can one spend 2 hours in side, it’s small place like a room in my house.

I visited here on a day that had a pending ice storm in APRIL. I guess few wanted to brave the storm but I had a fantastic visit. Stefan was my guide and he was excellent! He had fun facts, stories and allowed some insects to be held. This is a fairly new attraction since last June and I'm hoping that tourists and locals will come visit. This place is for all ages and could dispel a lot of myths about insects and not be so afraid. If you learn about them you end up thinking about them differently. Please parents bring your children, they will love this place!! and right on popular Sparks Street pedestrian walk.

The collection is a really broad one, covering a wide range of entomology. The guide was super enthusiastic, really helpful and seemed genuinely passionate about insects. Handling the various animals was super cool!

However, the labeling of the objects in the collection was pretty sub-par. Lots of stuff has labels that are too small, badly laid out, copied directly from websites and just cheaply printed out or missing entirely. The presentation kind of detracts from the general quality of the actual insects on display.

Additionally, and it's been mentioned before, the price is a little high- it is a very small collection, and I'm willing to forgive it cause the museum is relatively new, but I think it needs a little polish to justify the cost, currently.

Overall, though, absolutely worth a visit if you like learning about and handling insects!

The guides were fantastic - you can tell they have a passion for this type of work. I went in saying I wasn't touching any bug - but how often do you get to hold a tarantula or a thorny devil. I held them all and loved it!! My son has had a fear of centipedes for years, but he held the millipede and even let it crawl up his arm. It isn't a very large museum and it is expensive - but we came out an hour and a half later without any regrets at all! It was money well spent and the funnest part of that day! I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys science and hands on experiences!!
