We all know history from the country we live in. But seeing that same history as described by those of another country is a real eye opener and a great way to learn more about events you thought you understood. This museum is huge and the displays/ information is well laid out. If you plan to just walk through it then maybe 90 minutes will do but to really see this museum and understand everything they present I would say 3/4 hours minimum, some might move slower or need a second day if you have trouble standing for longer periods of time. Cost seemed high to me when I checked it out online but once we saw it I understood the price was justified. One note though. Call first and see if they are expecting any school groups on the day you might visit. I school groups will be there go a different day as teachers and museum staff do not supervise students and it becomes a playground not a museum on those days

Overall experience was average relative to the admission price. Strangely quite a few of the displayed pieces are not well lit, the artifacts are frequently in dark shadows. There are some interesting large paintings as well as "nose art" on the ramp down to the lower level but the angle of these pieces means they have reflections from the exterior windows so can't be viewed properly. Most of the exhibits that used computer displays had multiple malfunctioning terminals (touch screens didn't work) or missing headphones. The adobe flash warning dialog box was appearing on some. A lot of the pieces are either uniforms or guns. I was hoping for a more varied display of technology. Rarely was the inside of vehicles shown. (Photos attached don't capture the mentioned issues.)

First class museum. Always interesting to see the views of other players in wars,
especially in respect of wars of the 20th Century. Displays showed that Canadians have been fighting since the English, French and Scots etc, arrived. Museum shows the
sacrifice made by Canadians in WW1 and WW2. Took about three hours for my self
guided tour. Use underground car park for easy access.

Really good - actually much better than expected!
We went to the War Museum on a Thurs evening (pre book free admission on Thursday’s)…..this may have been a mistake as we thought 2 hours (5-7pm) would be enough time - it was not. Depends on your interest level but 3 hours would be recommended as there is a lot here! Contains exhibits that are well presented, interesting and better than just “items in a glass box” type of presentation - everything from complete history of war involving Canada to equipment, memorabilia, archival items - so very detailed. You can read as much or little as you want and still be engaged.
That said it was insanely busy with school groups the night we went making it tricky to see some areas as it was crowded (and loud - very loud).
Would recommend to almost everyone - kids who are studying a lot of this info in Social Studies to war enthusiasts.

In early May, online tickets are not needed. We easily bought our tickets at the museum. We stayed all day - 6-7 hours. Cafe serves lunch foods from the grill (like perogies $12), soup ($7-8), cold sandwiches $10), salads ($10), and drinks. We sat inside at a table with a view of the Ottawa River, but tables outside too. Visitors can walk along the river over a bridge for a closer view of the Ottawa Falls. The roof display doesn't open until July. Lockers are available for $1, nonrefundable, or leave jackets in the room on hangers without security.

The museum was a short walk from our hotel ( Hilton Garden Inn downtown) and we passed by another attraction, the Holocaust Memorial, on our way there. The Pimisi tram stop is also nearby as is a stop for bus #85.

The displays about war in Canada progress from early times to present day, all organized chronologically into 4 galleries and all on one floor. The brochure suggests about 45 minutes in each gallery and the war machinery area downstairs. Labelling is bilingual with English first and French second since the museum is located in Ontario not Quebec. Sounds of war drift the air throughout the galleries and each is on the dim side due to a lack of windows and dependance on spotlights. Displays in each gallery were varied from uniforms, rifles, bow and arrows, paintings, maps, photographs and so on - never a dull moment with this variety - and each well explained.

For 20th C wars, the focus is on Canadian participation so it was a surprise to see Hitler's black convertible on display. Downstairs, tanks (Russian,German, British, American - lots of them), motorcycles, missile shooters, jeeps, trucks - an array of 20th C war machinery - were on display inside in a weather protected heated area and accessible by elevator or stairs.

I enjoyed the first gallery the most with its focus on the early war years in Canada with the French against the indigenous population and visa versa and also as their ally against the 13 colonies and their indigenous allies. The painting showing the murder of the French Missionary Brebeuf by the Huron natives was chilling to view especially as one could see the captors' knives being heated in the glowing fire before being stabbed into the priest's flesh.

A very interesting take on the wars of the world from the point of view of Canadian involvement.
Lots of wonderful material, memorabilia, and equipment, extremely well presented.

Amazing experience.
Walking into this experience immediately gives you the feeling of humility.
The large, over sized walls and rooms set the tone for the rest of the facility.
The displays are as educational as they are entertaining, teaching while engaging.
We were told to expect to spend a couple of hours touring through the exhibits and we were there for over 4.
Would highly recommend this stop for anyone wanting to see some Canadian and world history.
I feel a newfound respect for those who served in every facet.

This is one of the most interesting museums from how much thought has been put into everything. There is a reason and meaning to every element from architecture to design to placement of elements. Everyone we have taken here has left truly impressed.

This is a very impressive museum by a global standard and the most impressive war museum.
However, as a British visitor of many years, it was so educational about Canadian history and the growth of a nation. Moreover, it was a revelation to see the part that Canada has played in world wars and global peace keeping that has been overlooked by Eurocentric story telling and movies.
The space afforded exhibits and multi-dimensional media and artefacts is truly world class.
This is a highly recommended museum and should be factored into any Ottawa visit.

The Canada War Museum has a massive and comprehensive collection of Canadian military history facts and artifacts to share from early indigenous tribal warfare to modern day contributions.
A word of warning, though - an earlier CWM description recommends 2 1/2 - 3 hours to visit; if you are one that reads every panel and views every exhibit, give yourself 1 1/2 to a 2 days to take it all in.
My trip to Ottawa from Calgary had a primary focus on visiting the Canada War Museum and it made the trip well worth it!
