After a 10 year absence this was a flying visit to the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa on a Thursday evening (5-8pm being free). Started at my favourite part - the video of the dinosaur extinction which has had some improvement to the sound and light show part of it. Bring on the lightning! Up to the top floor to see the Arctic exhibit: ecology, culture and 6 slabs of ice, real ice, with images projected onto it, that people could touch. Down to the birds, a temporary exhibit on wolves (which frankly could have been better), the mammal dioramas (which I love but the routing needs to be improved and why are people allowed to eat in galleries), the earth (the globe that showed Pangea and tectonic movements is gone as are the bats in the cavern - I was not the only one looking for them) and then the water.... miss the now gone weather section, much was ecology and climate change the "touching pool". The last we did not do as I think the creatures in the mock Pacific "rock pools" must be traumatised by all these humans invading their space.

Thank you for visiting us again after 10 years. We have shared your comments with our exhibitions team. Our temporary wolves exhibition has finished. We are very excited to open a new one on Oct. 11, Rewilding: The David Suzuki Foundation Arts Prize, featuring the works of 13 artists whose visionary works intertwine art, nature and biodiversity. Every visitor to our museum will have their favourite sections, but there will naturally be some changes over a decade. We are renewing the entrance to our Mammal Gallery, for example. The weather section in our Water Gallery has been replaced by a current and informative section on the challenges of ocean plastics. The Pacific Discovery Tank, with live tide-pool creatures, is also new. Our trained animal care staff ensure their proper daily care, and our interpreters are sometimes present for educational interaction and gentle (two-finger only) touching of certain species. To ensure the wellbeing of these animals, and of any live animals in the museum, we always have protocols approved in advance by our Animal Care Committee (which includes our staff, as well as two community members and a veterinarian). Regarding the “bats” in the cave in our Earth Gallery, we assure you that they are still there. Admittedly, they’re not easy to spot; part of the fun is trying to find them (tip: look up high). We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Nice new experience, not very interactive nonetheless good to see for first time. We can take a look at everything quickly like in 1 to 2 hours. Different floors with different things to see. I enjoyed the dinosaur exhibition the most with the movie. There was a Cafe within but the food isn't that good and not worth it for the price, we ordered a cheese and pepperoni pizza but it wasn't the best tasting and everything was overpriced.

We walked 5 blocks south from our Business Inn this morning to see this museum. After paying $26 for 2 seniors, we took the elevator to the 3rd floor’s Artic Hall. Its taxidermy models of Muskox(largest herbivore on the Arctic tundra), polar bear and narwhal were impressive along with many other mammals and birds including a live tank of colorful cold water marine animals. We descended the stairs to the 2nd floor’s earth hall with an impressive mineral display, then down to the ground floor’s popular dinosaur hall.
Clean restrooms were on each floor, a nice cafe and small gift shop.

We spent the better part of an afternoon touring the museum. Very well kept and clean. The dinosaur exhibit was quite interesting to us. Would recommend. Entry and parking fees are reasonable.

It was my first time going to the Canadian Museum of Nature and I don’t know what I was expecting but for me, it was just ok. The day I went there, it was packed with lots of kids and they were very noisy and running around everywhere.

Some of the animal displays were nice but nothing that really got my attention. I had to wait more than 20 minutes to buy tickets so I suggest to buy them in advance.

Overall, this activity wasn’t for me but it’s a great experience for families with children.

We went there a few days ago. The building looks impressive from the outside. The amount of space for exhibits is much smaller than what the size of the building would suggest.

The "fossils" on the dino floor seemed like they were all painted paper mache you could see brush strokes everywhere I was NOT impressed. Lots of dead animals in dioramas.

Then the second floor the "aquatic" exhibit... the jellyfish? They're DEAD... and the carcasses are flung around inside the tank via a current to make them seem like they are alive with their little bits flailing about. There was a tiny tiny little tank full of live creatures to interact with and also some other tanks with some uninteresting looking fish.

The rock collection was OK but also under cared for and the specimens were full of dust. I am a rock hound so this was the coolest part of the museum for me.

Now we get to bugs alive (The exhibit you pay extra to see on the top floor). Its called BUGS ALIVE. 1% of the thing was live insects.. the rest of it was posters on the walls, and pinned up dead insects under glass. There were these light up pods that could hold about a dozen people in each.. I think there were 4 pods total maybe more.. each one had a different theme but it was all lights and plastic with very little information about anything. There was a slide in the exhibit.... That tiny slide was the best part of the entire museum for my kids.

Also.. the staff are VOLUNTEER!! With what they charge they get to have volunteer staff!! They have loaded that museum with stuff that requires the least possible maintenance (Saves $$$) AND they dont pay their staff.

$118 for 2 adults and 2 kids. We felt very ripped off. If I had thought to ask for a refund I would have certainly tried. At least for "Bugs Alive"

Thank you for your comments. We’re sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations. We adhere to the highest standards for our galleries and scientific collections. Our exhibitions feature real specimens that are curated by highly trained experts. In our Fossil Gallery, more than 80% of the material on display are actual fossil specimens. We make use of models and replicas where necessary to best illustrate the story we want to tell about past life; all major natural history museums do so. Many of the brush strokes you noticed on the dinosaur skeletons are due to paints and varnishes applied in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to real fossil material in order to create a more consistent appearance, a practice that is no longer employed in palaeontology. Since we have a large collection of historically important fossils – including the first dinosaur material found and mounted in Canada – many of our specimens were prepared using now-outdated methods. In the Water Gallery’s ocean plastics pollution section, there is a tank with live moon jellies. The tank is specially designed so there is a gentle water current to circulate the live jellyfish around. (Beside them is a separate tank showing circulating bits of ocean plastic that is meant to demonstrate how sea turtles, for example, can mistakenly consume plastics.) The tank/system is maintained and monitored 365 days a year by our professional Animal Care staff. They diligently care for all the live creatures in our museum, including maintaining a back-of-house animal care area. Our summer special exhibition that you visited (with the walk-through pods and the slide etc) is called Bug Adventure and comes to us from the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. There is a separate ticked price for this exhibition. We recognize that there is some confusion, as we also have a permanent exhibition on the lowest level of the museum called Bugs Alive. In Bug Adventure – a big colourful, larger-than-life experience that is meant to show the world as bugs do – we’ve added some of our own content (you noted some pinned insects) as well as a station where visitors can chat with a museum interpreter and see some live insects. To clarify, Bugs Alive, included with museum admission, is where you’ll find numerous terraria of live insects and arachnids. We are honoured to have a dedicated team of volunteers who assist our excellent scientific and programming staff. The volunteers do not replace museum staff but support the delivery of activities and are a very valuable part of our museum family. Regarding dust in our mineral cases, the museum does have a scheduled maintenance plan, but sometimes extra cleaning is required. The museum’s collections and conservations staff check the condition of the collections on display regularly. Your comments have been shared with them. Again, we’re sorry that you were disappointed with your museum visit. If you would like to follow up, feel free to email us at questions@nature.ca.

Very nice discovery. The exhibitions are presented on several levels in a building which has many charms. We let ourselves be carried from room to discovery.

So much to see, be sure you have enough time. Staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. Even though there was some work being done inside, it did not affect our visit at all. Great spot to
Spend an afternoon.

We enjoyed all the displays. Watch out in the coffee shop however, as it was NOT my intention to tip the counter service staff...but they somehow snuck in a 20% tip on my bill !!
I did not agree to this !!! Usury!!!likely, I did not push the " no tip" button!!! Live & learn!!!

Lovely and manageable museum with many exhibits. Great for kids who can read, a little less fun for those who can’t.

The Dino extinction movie is very scary for kids. The owl special exhibit was a big hit
