Women are Persons! is the correct title of the group of five women who fought for the right of women to be voted in the Senate - I guess that's the reason why it is near the Senate of Canada. Canadian Supreme Court said that women are not qualified for the Senate so they brought the case before the highest court in the British Empire. It's great that these women are remembered as they made history.
When we were there it was heavy rain but was worth to read the information - sorry therefore the photo is not perfect.

The Famous Five Monument, created in 2000, is a tribute to five women who fought for women's political rights in Canada: Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, Nellie McClung, Emily Murphy and Henrietta Muir Edwards.
They brought a case before the highest court in the British Empire (the Privy Council) to appeal a 1928 decision by the Supreme Court of Canada. That court had ruled that women could not be appointed to the Senate, because they were not "qualified persons." On October 18, 1929, the Privy Council reversed this decision. This sculpture was also featured on the back of the $50 bill. Great Monument and worth a visit.

Originally installed on Parliament Hill in 2000, Barbara Paterson’s “Women are Persons!” monument (the proper name of the piece) was temporarily moved near the Senate building in 2019 until Centre Block renovations are completed. Given the monument’s subject matter, its move to the Senate edifice is quite apt.
In brief, Alberta’s “Famous Five” – Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise McKinney and Irene Parlby – went to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1927 and asked them to interpret Section 24 of the British North America Act (1867) and, specifically, the phrase “qualified persons” as it relates to Senate appointments. The court ruled in the negative; however, the “Five” appealed to the Privy Council in England and this higher court ruled in their favour in 1929. The case famously became known as the “Persons Case.” I remember learning about this in an introductory Canadian Politics course and the whole thing just seemed ludicrous to me. In what world do we have to debate that women are “persons” qualified to sit in our chamber of sober second thought? As Homer Simpson would say, “what an age we live in!”
Over time, the case grew in importance because of what it meant for women’s suffrage, rights and, indeed, the Constitution. Thus, the monument is apt and appropriate. It depicts the Famous Five celebrating their victory, inviting us to take part. Interestingly, none of the women became senators, though they were appointed “honorary senators” in 2009 – some 80 years after the case.
Curiously, in a time where we tend to critically question, interrogate, “cancel” and, sometimes, pull down statues of historic figures whose beliefs might not be acceptable in the twenty-first century – a sort of retro-shaming, if you will – nothing has been said about this monument. I wonder why?
To be clear: I’m not advocating for any kind of cancellation. I think that’s silly. But I do think those who protest at the statues of historic figures should do so equally. Sir John A. Macdonald may have done and thought some dastardly things, but so too have others, i.e.: the figures in this monument. Fair is far.
That issue notwithstanding, this monument is well worth a stop to consider the impact these five women had on the country. Of note: There are two identical monuments in Calgary and Winnipeg.
As an aside, it’s nice to finally see a public art listing on TripAdvisor with 200+ reviews. Typically, the ones I see are in the low single digits or, if lucky, double digits!

I love everything about this sculpture. From the playful tone, to its beautiful design, to the fitting tribute to the five women who triumphed in their legal fight that allowed women to be named Canadian Senators. A brilliant piece of public art.

Loved this. There is very clearly the need the world over for more public art representing and valuing the contribution women have made to society, history, family and politics etc. But I was impressed here, and in other parts of Canada, where sculptures and representations of successful women were evident.
