A huge monument to those Canadians who gave their lives in a number of wars. It stands proud not far from Parliament Hill where the men who take decisions to send men to war work!

Quick stop. Took some pictures I love. And spent 15 minutes just staring. I loved coming to see it.
On Canada Day, we saw two presentations from the youth Air Force (Not sure what's their official name, I apologize), and the Change of the Guard starts here in the summer.

This is an imposing and beautiful monument to all of Canada's fallen in battle. It also includes Canada's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It was nice to be there for the changing of the sentries, which occurs at the top of the hour during the day.

It is situated in the middle of the Confederation Square. It's result of an international competition and was unveiled in 1939 by King George VI.

Located in Confederation Square, and unveiled in 1939 by King George VI, this beautiful monument made of bronze and granite was originally built to honour all those soldiers who lost their lives during the so-called Great War (World War I); however, with the passage of time, Canada’s National War Memorial – also called “The Response” – has come to symbolize and honour ALL Canadians who’ve served in conflicts since 1939 and, indeed, those who will serve in times of war in the years to come. In this regard, the National War Memorial is “timeless.” This timelessness forms the essence of the annual Remembrance Day celebrations, which are held each year on November 11: The Royal Canadian Legion, RCMP, Governor General, Prime Minister, Service Women and Men, and the public come together to pay their respects to those who’ve fallen in past and current wars.
As I mentioned in my earlier review of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, I’m usually not big on war memorials, but this one just gets to me. It is, ironically, a solemn spot in the middle of bustling Ottawa for remembrance and reflection; and this is all beautifully captured by the National War Memorial, inclusive of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
When visiting Ottawa, make sure to patronize this site. It is at once beautiful, sad and powerful.

We have visited the Vimy Ridge Canadian Memorial to the Missing in France on several occasions. It is magnificent. So, we wanted to visit the National Canadian War Memorial in Ottawa to see how they compared. The one in Ottawa is beautiful on a much smaller scale. It is the site of the national Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 11 each year. It is located on the upper plaza of the National War Memorial in Confederation Square at the corner of Elgin Street on Confederation Boulevard.
There is no parking near it except possibly at the Westin Hotel across the way from the Memorial. Traffic in downtown Ottawa is a nightmare, but Canadians are so friendly and courteous, we managed well enough. The Memorial was unveiled in 1939 to honor the sacrifices of Canadians who served in WWI. It eventually came to honor all Canadians who served and continue to serve in time of war. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier lies in front of the memorial. The tomb contains the remains of an unknown Canadian soldier from a war cemetery near Vimy Ridge, France. It is very moving and emotional to visit. Don't miss it.

Canada's National War Memorial pays tribute to all those who died in war. The memorial forms an arch and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is placed in front of it. There are several sculptures around the Memorial Arch. The Memorial is central to the significance of Confederation Square. It is a place worth visiting.

After walking Sparks from he Marriott we ended up at Canada's National War Memorial near Parliament Hill.
We sat down about 5 p.m, which happened to be the time when the sentries end their duty for the for day.
One of blue polo shirt uniformed tourist ambassadors face us a head sup on what was was going to take place and little but of history about the monument.
The ceremony lasted less than 10 minutes and featured a bagpiper.
It's worth a stop.

Je ne pouvais pas venir à Ottawa sans m'incliner sur la tombe du Soldat Canadien Inconnu. Les Canadiens ont libéré mon pays du joug allemand.

This is a very good memorial with sentries on duty during the day from spring to autumn, there is a changing of the guard , if you are any where near then it’s worth spending the time to watch and at 5pm you will see and hear the piper during the short ceremony.
