A visit that is definitely worth a visit because if from afar, this architectural complex seems austere and a little weird, up close it is a construction feat. Light plays with concrete, the views of Montreal are splendid. Visiting the reception apartment during the World Expo is really interesting.
Not to be avoided quite the contrary.

You can only photograph Habitat 67 from the street unless you sign up for a guided tour inside the closed area.
Even from the street—and from a nearby bridge—the architectural vision is obvious and highly photogenic.
If you ever played with Lego bricks as a child, you’ll feel a sense of nostalgia looking at the block-on-block design of these modules.

I only saw from the river but was amazed at the shape of the building. Habitat 67, or simply Habitat, is a housing complex at Cité du Havre, on the Saint Lawrence River, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, designed by Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie.

Jacklyn (spelling?) was an awesome tour guide. She knew a lot about the architect and his life, the history of events that lead up to the building, features and structures of Habitat 67, and what is currently happening there. She provided a lot of visuals to make the learning engaging and fun for a diverse group of people. There was time to ask questions, look around and take pictures. From the exterior, this building did not excite me. Once I took the tour, I was surprised how alive I felt inside one of the units we visited together. The inside of the unit is how I had imagined and wanted classrooms to be during my grade school and higher education years. Finally, I encountered someone with a specialty in architecture who created such a design. i most definitely recommend this while visiting Montreal.

"Habitat 67 can be attributed to the architectural style of Brutalism or Structuralism." - that pretty much says it all.
Interesting architecture of a residential complex on the St. Lawrence River designed by the architect Moshe Safdie between 1966 and 1967, which consists of 354 tiered cuboids with a total of 158 residential units.
It was built as part of the Expo 67 world exhibition that took place in Montreal in 1967 and was a stop on the Expo Express during this time.

High points:
Guide is a knowledgeable and experienced architect. She provided a detailed description of how Habitat was constructed, including individual units; described the architect’s goals and design accomplishments during his career; took us inside the architect’s apartment, which is nearly the same as when constructed; showed the one section of the complex in detail; explained the sociology underlying the project; provided general information about Expo 67; described how Habit is maintained; and explained who the current residents are. Unexpected bonus: We were able to peer into a unit undergoing complete restoration. Also, our guide supplemented her talk with 8x11 inch photos, spoke clearly, answered questions thoroughly, and arrived on time.

My husband and I took the tour today. My husband was reluctant but accompanied me. We both enjoyed it very much and appreciated the wealth of information provided by our guide, Francisco. He shared a passion for the architect’s futuristic vision in creating this in ‘67. Shared many photos of construction, original furniture.

This weird-looking collection of condos can be viewed easily from the street, but I took a tour offered by the Property for a more in depth experience. At C$50 per person, it’s expensive, but it was 90 minutes long and included an apartment tour and the guide (Simon) was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Habitat 67 is architecturally interesting, has great views and is the first project of famous architect Moshe Safdie, but the property itself is unpleasant. There are bugs and bird poop everywhere, the windows are filthy, and stairways are unmaintained. The units themselves are comically small. I don’t see the appeal of living here even if the architecture is interesting.

Reserved in advance and toured with a total of 9. Parked on the road into the Park ~9:40. Met guide at entrance. Walked throughout the complex well-paced with narrative context educational and entertaining. Effective delivery of the architecture designed by Moshe Safdie. Held our attention for 90+ minutes. Now motivated to know more about this architect. Much natural light, spectacular views, built to support community spirit but complex seemed lifeless. There were a lot of windows (needing cleaning). While we were in awe of the approach, we really wonder about life within.

It's the famous housing development that was built as a part of the international expo in 1967. It still looks good and I understand that the apartments are popular places to live. In the middle of the river.

Are there any tours in Montreal that feature Habitat 67? Even just a drive by for photos would be nice.
Skrevet 9. august 2016
Not that I have discovered - and I went to the main tourist information office on Peel Street: they were extremely helpful telling me how I could get there by both public transport and on foot but they were unaware of any tours which take it in. It should be said that Habitation 67 is entirely residential and therefore not open to the public. Big signs surround the block as a reminder of this so there is no show flat to visit (shame: they are missing out!). I wasn't alone visiting - I noticed 2 cyclists walking round with cameras so it really does have potential as a tourist attraction. However be ready for a LONG walk to get there whether you use public transport or not and limited access to it.
