This tower was built in 1922 to honour sailors who were lost during World War I. It is 45-meter-tall and overlooks the bank of the St. Lawrence River. Clock Tower is a replica of Big Ben.

Erected in 1922 at the entrance to Montreal’s Old Port, and dedicated to the seamen who lost their lives in the First World War, the Clock Tower can be seen from miles away. It is a prominent landmark in Montreal’s skyline and it calls and beckons to those relatively near. Indeed, as my partner and I ambled towards the Old Port, the Clock Tower certainly called us over. The Tower’s Beux-Arts architectural style, concomitant with its prominent position, is attractive to the eye.

I will admit, in this instance, that walking towards the Clock Tower was something of a chore due to a foot issue I’d been dealing with at the time. In fact, it had pretty much hindered our entire day trip to Montreal; however, it was still nice to get out and observe a few important sites like le old Clock Tower in le Old Port.

Getting up close to the tower, you really begin to appreciate it. Standing nearly 150 feet tall, the Clock Tower is made primarily of concrete. Its all-white colour causes it to sit brilliantly against the backdrop of the mighty St. Lawrence and the Old Port of Montreal – shining like a metaphorical light into the past and future all at once. Consider:

The Montreal Clock Tower was built at the end of World War I. At the time, there was a strong will and sentiment to build a monument to those whose lives were lost far too soon. Hence, this tower, which was also known as the Sailors Memorial Clock Tower because of the poignant dedication on the tower’s north wall. It also served as a literal beacon to the vessels traveling in and out of the Old Port, most of which were shipping grain. In this respect, the Clock Tower is very much a reflection of the political, economic and social environment of the time.

In the current day, while the memorial to the fallen sailors is still powerful, the Clock Tower serves more of a symbolic purpose. It was a witness to the golden age of the Port, and functioned as a literal beacon. Now, it is an emblematic monument to that time and that place – formally recognized as one of Canada’s “Historic Places” in 1996. Of course, there’s a bit of tourism tossed in with the viewing tower (which was closed at the time of our visit), but that’s par for the course.

Clock Tower Beach sits below the tower, but we did not visit the fake beach.

A personal aside: I’m not sure if I’m tired or just getting tired of writing reviews. This one took me a fair while to put together. Hmmm. . .

The Montreal Clock Tower, or Tour de l’Horloge in French, is located at the entry point to the Old Port. Construction of the tower was completed in 1922 and it was dedicated to the seamen who died in World War I. It’s quite a tall building with a clock at the top. It can be seen from a distance.

It's a somewhat tall tower at the entrance to the old port near the ferris wheel. You will note it as you walk around, but I do not recommend that you go out of your way to see it.

At the entrance of the harbour, on a corner, ideal for turning halfway the walk of the old harbour. Nice tower but the river (what a currents!) makes it really an attraction.

We went for the view of Montreal from top in the Giant wheel and decided to explore the near by areas. We saw this Clock tower on banks of magnificent St Lawrence river.

It's impossible to walk around old Montreal and not come across the clock tower. The area around the tower is the Montreal harbour and it is a very good spot to go for long walks. The are also provides very good photo shooting opportunities.
