I took my 7 year old granddaughter to the Pointe à Callière archeological museum in the Old Port last Friday. There is a pirate/privateer installation that we were particularly interested in that is for 6 - 12 year olds. One activity on the ship's deck was steering the ship through dangerous waters on a screen. My granddaughter set off cannons and tried to walk on a set up of unsteady platforms to replicate the rocking deck. Another was hitting rats popping up on a screen to teach them in a fun way that there was a serious problem with vermin on board the ships.
There was much more than the ship to explore and discover and my granddaughter was fascinated by it all. We walked the length of sewers built in the 1800s that took waste out to the river. The interactive panels and projections made learning about the history of Montreal accessible to children. There was a very moving short film on a huge screen about the flood that engulfed Montreal in the mid 1800s. There are many beautifully displayed showcases of artefacts such as pottery pieces, silver cutlery, coins, arrow heads etc.. that were discovered in the early city. The museum even set up a dig site for children to learn to be archeologists digging in sand for these treasures. My granddaughter was fascinated by it all. It was a very enriching experience for my granddaughter...and Granny.

I'm visiting from the United States and so I come with the expectation that public buildings will be adapted for the disabled. After I purchased my ticket for $27, I found out that the only elevator in building A is broken. I went to watch the intro to Montreal, which is up a handful of stairs and I watch the 17 minute presentation. However to exit the presentation you have to go upstairs and then down a full level of stairs to the basement. In the basement this is also not adapted to the disabled. there appears to be wheelchair lifts which keys are needed for and there are no attendants. At one point I started to cry, if you build the museum with a single elevator, when it breaks you should have signs at the front door and at the ticket counter. However living outside of Washington DC this would NEVER happen (a museum relying on a single elevator and selling tickets when it's broken). Am appalled.

We came here on a Saturday shortly after opening. The line to get in was quite long if you didn't order your tickets online. Guides at the desk were very helpful. Considering the line to get in, it wasn't overly crowded in the museum. It was very interesting some of the history. They even had some interactive exhibits that the kids would like. Definitely worth a visit.

The museum is pretty good - has a good show on montreal's history, ruins were good and great place to walk around. Decent museum - great chance to walk in the sewer for fans. Great place to walk around on a rainy day and learn a little bit about montreal's history

This museum does not pay for a mine but offers a good understanding of the foundations of Montreal thanks to a great introductory film, which values the history and the multicultural dimension of the city.
The basement traces all the periods with very dynamic visual processes.

What a beautiful and unusual museum built on top of the foundations of hundreds of years of history. We spent about 3 hours touring each section, please sure to go to the top for the view of the city. Highly recommend. It’s a treasure for local Canadians

This wasn't on my list of things to do/see while we were in Montreal but we were following a suggested route to see the sights in old Montreal and came upon this. It was a hot day and so we walked in and inquired about the archeology piece of this museum. We were in Italy last year and saw so many underground ruins that were just amazing so we gave this a try. It did not disappoint. My husband was amazed and I'm surprised it isn't higher on the list of things to do in Montreal. If we come back, I know my husband will want to do it again. Amazing to see buildings dated so long ago still in one piece and well maintained in North America.

My family came here on a trip to Montreal. The kids range in age from 14 years old to 4 years, so we have a wide variety of ages. Everyone really enjoyed their experience. There were enough exhibits to keep the kids happy. The museum itself is a great concept of building a museum over actual historic ruins. We will definitely come back on future visits, as the museum will age well with the kids.
