I really don't know what to think of the Underground City. I know it's necessary for the rough weather seasons but if you are used to the stand alone malls we have in the US thenyou are going to be a bit shocked. Because it's HUGE. 20+ miles huge. I took my daughter to check it out and we entered in the the Complexe Desjardins entrance. That center was okay. But pretty. There was a really big supermarket called IGA which was fun to walk around and see Canadian producst. The other mall stores however were not really for the younger set but it did have the coolest chocolate store there called Chocolat Favoris. We had the best chocolate dipped cones we ever had in our lives there. Highly recommend. The food court also looked cool but we had already had lunch before we got there. We finally asked someone what part of the Underground City was best and he sent us over the Eaton. Go there. More of the modern stores are there. I think it's pretty amazing that Montreal folks probably have this Underground City memorized.

Expectations were high regarding Underground City, even more so when we saw that one of the days we would be in Montreal would feel -17 degrees. It was all a bit confusing, from the information on the subways about where the entrance would be, we drove around several points where they said the entrance was, and we didn't come to any conclusions. Finally, we took the subway (as advised by the employees there), to a station and arrived at the entrance to the Underground City. It really has many stores and a food court with excellent options (Italian food, Chinese food, Haitian food, Vietnamese food, among others), but it is not a place to waste many hours. It seemed more like a shopping center to me than a "city" as the advertisement was made. We found an open-air exhibition at one of the CEO's exits that made it worth going there.

Overall, this network of tunnels and venues is brilliant. My complaint is that the maps and signs are just not sufficient to help a first timer figure out where they are going. It is particularly confusing in the Victoria/Bonaventure area. We were walking around with several other tourists and none of us could figure out if we were really going the right way. I'm sure once you do it a few times it becomes second nature.

1. The interesting parts of the RESO are not really underground at all. They are mostly malls and mostly above ground. Some of those areas are circled in blue in the attached map.

2. Vast swaths of the RESO are completely uninteresting, and nothing more than underground passageways having the main advantage of protection from elements.

3. The underground passageways range from clean/well-lit to dim and downright seedy.

4. If you are staying anywhere near the Old City, those parts (circled in Red in attached picture) are totally worthless other than weather protection. It is a long walk to anything interesting. I did see tour guides with groups by the piece of the Berlin Wall which seems to be the only real draw in this entire portion of the RESO. There is also an indoor fountain nearby, neither of which are really worth a trek there.

5. There are many level changes involved in navigating the RESO. Most have functioning escalators/elevators but some do not.

6. There is no good way to navigate the passageways. The "maps" online and in the RESO are next to useless. Especially the ones in the RESO, since they don't have a "You Are Here" or even "Vous etes ici".

7. Signage is similarly terrible. Sparse and vague. Has nothing to do with whether you speak French, although on the margins it can be helpful.

8. In fairness, if you know your way already, the RESO is super convenient for getting around without traffic or weather issues. Malls, government services, metro, primary train station, bell centre, hotels, offices etc.

9. Tours - I did not sign up for one, so its quite possible I don't know what I'm missing, but there just is not that much of interest other than the obvious destination malls and complexes. The value I can see is (a) if you are into some of the art installations that can be found and (b) orienting to the basic navigation.

In sum, the whole RESO is a disjointed and hard to figure out way to get to primary destinations underground. It is not a destination itself. While functionally great for local denizens, it is in sore need of a unified campaign to make it more useful to tourists, if that is an audience they would like to continue to market it to.

Start with good maps that clearly spell out where you are and how to get places, including where you go up and down levels, take turns, etc. Its surprising Google Maps doesn't have this capability. One should be able to enter a destination and have clear directions how to get there underground, like google Nav or Waze for RESO. Marry that with a StreetView-like 360 view of the underground passage and you have a winning app. Seems like a great project for a McGill Computer Science major.

Unless someone tells you, you can not imagine how good and extensive the underground city is. Very clean, great shops, busy, and you can walk around whatever the weather. It is always one of the highlights of every visit I make to Montreal.

First a disclaimer, we are from Minneapolis, where the downtown buildings are all linked by second floor skyways. So, the idea of a bunch of connected buildings was nothing unique to us. That said, that's what this is, a bunch of buildings connected by tunnels. There is at least one very cool fountain in the Complex des Jardins and the Eaton center has a very nice "high-end food court" with various upscale options (no McD or Tim Hortons here). But otherwise, there really aren't any particular attractions, except for the various stores and restaurants--which are mostly in either Eaton Center or CDJ anyway. In fact, walking through the tunnels (at least on Sunday morning when we were there), can be a bit creepy.

It was cold and raining so we decided to wonder around the underground. It was also a Sunday. The place was packed. It was hard to navigate too. Market One looked like a great idea. It was an upscale food court. We couldn’t find 2 seats together so we left

This is a mall. Just a mall. It was clean and organized well. It had some of the big stores you'd hope for along with some independents that were kinda cool. And it was convenient to where we were staying.

Tunnels are awful and nothing like I expected. We decided to try them back to our hotel rather than walk along the street on a Saturday afternoon.
Big mistake. All we encountered were homeless men, one who proceeded to wet himself.
Our 12yo daughter was crying and terrified and wanted to get out, which we did as soon as we found an exit. Not a place for families or even single females in my opinion.
It was very creepy and I wouldn’t walk through them on my own.
