Poor value for money. Probably better for families with kids and also helps if you speak French.
Good views from the top over Montreal.

Shocked and annoyed at the mediocre to negative comments on here. What were you expecting?!?
Look, if you are not into architecture, nature, parks, worlds fairs, walking or environmental museums then don’t even bother going. You will be disappointed.
But, if you are curious about one of the most unique and revolutionary structures ever to be built…and a lasting monument to Montreal’s (and Canada’s) culturally significant 1967 universal & world exposition- EXPO 67, then please go!! The former expo site has been turned into a beautiful natural park on a group of islands in the middle of the St Lawrence river and downtown Montreal.
I previously worked as a host/guide at the USA Pavilion at EXPO 86 in Vancoucer, so I felt that I had to pay my respects to one of the best US Pavilions the federal government ever created in a foreign country to date. While sad that a 1976 fire destroyed the acrylic plastic exterior panels on the structure, the city of Montreal and govt of Quebec have done a great job in repurposing the building into the wonderful Biosphere - an environmental museum focused on water sustainability/conservation and the St. Lawrence river system. There is a cost to the museum but it’s affordable.
Do take your time when you go up to the top levels and definitely stop and look at the sheer size of the space. The current museum exhibits are of high quality and usually include an artistic temporary component that is relevant to the environmental theme.
Before you go, Google “US pavilion EXPO 67” and marvel at the photos of the building in all its glory! Be amazed at the thoughtful displays of 1967 American culture that were put together and how they filled the massive upper dome area with giant American art pieces and the NASA space equipment and parachutes. All are gone now, but when you walk around you can get a sense of how amazing it must have been.
American designer Buckminster Fuller did an amazing job at creating a massive lightweight structure that was one of the signature buildings of expo 67.

A brilliant structure on an island in the river. It is quite ethereal as the dome is not solid, more a massive dome of scaffolding, so whilst it might appear it reflects the clouds you are actually looking through it at the clouds, Well worth the effort to see it

We did not go inside museum and up to observation deck. We did walk around the patio. Very cool to see in person. The park it is in is also very cool to drive around.

We took a guided bus tour so we saw this great architectural building which left from EXPO '67 on Saint Helen's Island and where was the American exposition. I was glad that we saw it and it is still standing but I doubt that we would go there by ourselves as there is so much to see in Downtown.

We went to experience the Biosphere on Saturday, August 3, 2024. There are 4 ways to get here from the city of Montreal. 1. drive your car across the bridge to the island. If you don't have a car then.. 2. walk across the pedestrian bridge, but it is a long walk from the city. 3. take the ferry, inexpensive and a nice short ride with views of the surroundings. 4. Take the Metro subway. Yes, you can easily board at Berri-UQAM station and it actually goes under the St. Lawrence River and drops you at the station near the center of the island.
My wife and I took the ferry, it is a significant walk from the ferry dock to the Biosphere, but very well worth it. I'm really not sure why this place has so many bad reviews. In reading some reviews it seems they didn't know of or neglected to view all that is there. It is quite a lot and well worth the admission cost. This Biosphere actually burned to the ground in the 1970s. It was rebuilt even better. From the flower garden/water feature and photo exhibits outside to the many multiple rooms of interactive nature, environmental reuse/recycling exhibits, well done videos including a beautiful large screen one showing underwater microcosms enlarged in full color. There are multiple floors of exhibits with an elevator or stairs. Don't miss the top two floors. In Air Conditioned comfort, you can sit and relax on couches and comfy chairs and admire the scenery from floor to ceiling glass. Or go to the top floor outside within the geodome and admire the 360 degree views above downtown Montreal and all the surrounding countryside. This is an amazing place, great for everyone, kids will love the interactive activities. Very highly recommended.

This is one of the things you're supposed to see in Montreal. I would just say, no. Unless you have a lot of time to kill. Remarkably underwhelming and a long way to go for not much. Unless you're the world's biggest Buckminster Fuller fan, you can skip it. And even then, you still might want to.

Unfortunately, on the day of my visit, it was raining, so getting here by metro/bus was a bit difficult, but it was worth the visit! I've learned new information about climate change and seeing a panoramic view of Montréal was unforgettable.

I donate it to USA after the exhibition
It was covered in plastic cloth but burned in the 70s and has not been replaced. Inside there are some exhibitions related to nature care and climate change. It is located on the island of St. Helena in the middle of the St. Lawrence River

Impressive building but exhibits weren’t that great and overall seems to be in need of a refurb.
Surrounding areas were quite interesting so a good activity potentially saved for a rainy day.

How much time should I expect to spend here with two kids (11 and 8)?

Maximum of one hour would be sufficient to look at the exhibits and reaching the top level for the view.
