We stumbled upon this church walking along the waterfront. What a delightful find. The church was used by seamen. Boats hang from the ceiling -- offerings for a good voyage. We were told some offerings are life-size. Be sure to talk to the people in the chapel; they have a wealth of information.
We climbed to the top and enjoyed the view.
An off-the-beaten-path find.

A church in the district of Old Montreal in Montreal, Quebec. One of the oldest churches in Montreal, it was built in 1771 over the ruins of an earlier chapel. The church is located at 400 Saint Paul Street East at Bonsecours Street, just north of the Bonsecours Market in the borough of Ville-Marie (Champ-de-Mars metro station).

We were one of the first visitors that day and wandered through one of the oldest chapels in Montreal.

A self guided tour option was available by scanning a QR code or enabling the NFC function on your phone. It was called the Bonsecours Experience and these signs were posted around the church but I could only get 2 of them to work on my phone.

The church was a little dark inside but very detailed with a lot of interesting items. One of the unique features inside was the hanging small model ships that were left by sailors.

The museum was an additional fee but well worth the CAD14 to learn about Marguerite-Bourgeoys and the work that she did to establish a school for the children and the first chapel of Quebec City. Admission also granted us access to the recently renovated crypt (made from Montreal grey stone) which was first erected over the original chapel and then a climb up to the "Chapelle Aerienne". Here were views of the surrounding area as well as close up of the large statue of Our Lady of the Harbour.

The Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours church is one of the oldest churches in Montreal and was built in 1771 on the ruins of an even older church and also houses the Marguerite Bourgeoys Museum (which can be visited for CAN$14 admission).

Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel, also known as the “Sailors Church,” represented one of the last major stops on our day tour of Old Montreal. This wasn’t for lack of things to do; rather, the foot issue I’d been dealing with at the time was starting to become a bother and made it quite uncomfortable to amble about. As such, my time visiting this lovely church was marred by increasing pain, which obviously detracted from my overall enjoyment from what is a lovely – and somewhat quirky – house of worship.

In any event, the Sailors Church was built in 1771 on the foundations of an even older church (which, I think, makes it one of the oldest churches in Montreal). It was designed by Marguerite Bougeoys, one of Montreal’s first teachers. The design is at once opulent and practical: Opulent because of the ornate biblical scenes that decorate the ceiling concomitant with beautiful stained-glass windows; and practical because the church isn’t large and serves a clear and definite purpose. Yes, it’s no Notre Dame Basilica, but it carries its own unique charm and character.

Besides the ornate ceiling work and obvious religious symbolism found throughout the sanctuary, this church’s most defining characteristic has to be the wooden model ships that hang from the ceiling, giving Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel its alternate name (“Sailors Church”). “But,” you might ask, “why boats?” And that’s where this church’s connection to the Old Port and sea comes into play. Beginning in the 19th century, sailors arriving from the Old Port would make a pilgrimage to this church and make offerings to the Virgin Mary as thanks for her help in safe sea voyages. The model boats and the church’s nickname are meant to emphasize this unique connection with Montreal’s Old Port and St. Lawrence River. I think this is a really neat touch and adds something special to the church.

Marguerite Bougeoys Museum, which first opened in 1998, is also housed in the church; however, we did not visit it, nor did we visit the archeological site or lookout tower. Again, I blame the foot pain! That issue notwithstanding, we still enjoyed our visit to this church and highly recommend it to those exploring Old Montreal. It is much more than meets the eye!

Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel is a beautiful church. There is some stunning glass work on the windows and little boats hang from the ceiling which also gives it the name of the sailors church. The site has a very long history going back to the 18th century and even earlier.

We stopped to visit this church while on a walking tour. The church is a lovely one, but what sets it apart are the boat/ships that hang from the ceiling, for this church is also known as the Sailor's Church. The original church burnt down and the only thing that survived was a virgin Mary icon, which is on display in the church. One should definitely stop by.

Unexpected find on a rainy day. So much to see here and definitely worth the modest entry fee. Be sure to go all through the exhibits, from the archeological site down below, to the lookout tower at the top. We loved this!

Located next to the Old Port of Montreal, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Divine Help was built in 1771 and is one of the oldest churches in Montreal. Because many sailors came here to thank the Virgin for her shelter after arriving in Montreal in the early years, this church was also called the Sailors' Church. You can understand its connection by hanging a small boat from the chapel. The church is not large in size, but the interior decoration is quite exquisite and gorgeous, which is worth admiring.

How beautiful is this chapel dedicated to the sailor, it is a pilgrimage chapel and dates from 1655. A very beautiful decoration brings a lot of tranquility to this place. It is the oldest chapel in Montreal.
